The document discusses different Ayanamshas used in Hindu astrology and why the Lahiri Ayanamsha is currently the most widely used.

The Lahiri Ayanamsha was adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee as being the most accurate available. It is used until a more accurate method can be determined.

Other proposed Ayanamshas mentioned include Raman, Deva-Detta, and Krishna Moorthy.

QUESTION BY MR.AIM HETEP NUUA MEHAB Is there any ayanamsa that is more accurate than others? Also... how exactly is the ayanamsa determined. I have been using Sri Yuktesvar's because of his explanation in his book, "The Holy Science" concerning the procession of the equinoxes.

ANSWER BY MR.GAURANGA DAS

The conclusion of the Indian Calendar Reform Committee was that Lahiri (Chitrapaksha)Ayanamsha is the most correct that we have for now. However, according to the experience, even this can be off for a few seconds of arc from the perfect. Try using that one for the time being. The calculation of the Lahiri Ayanamsha is as follows: 1. The date of coincidence of the two zodiacs (as per the Calendar Committee) was the day of the vernal equinox in 285. AD. 2. The rate of precession in a solar year is 50 1/3 seconds of arc. I think this amount is given in Varahamihira's Pancasiddhantika (may others correct me if I'm wrong). 3. The point of coincidence is the opposite point to the exact middle of the Chitra Nakshatra which is signified by the star Spica. This is 180 deg of the sidereal zodiac whereas the opposite point is the beginning of Aries and Ashvini. I personally do not agree with the explanation given by Shri Yukteshvar neither in the duration of the whole precession cycle, nor in the determination of the duration and beginning of the four Yugas. Of course Ayanamsha is a vast topic, and there might be endless discussions and opinions on this, which would be rather inconclusive. Anyway, this is my advice.

QUESTION BY MR.GAURANGA DAS

Could You explain me why are we using the Lahiri Ayanamsha and not any other? I was asked this question and I could answer only that "because my Guru said so". So I accept it, but is here any explanation for its being the most accurate one?

ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH

The Litmus test of any Ayanamsa is the accuracy of its working. The Lahiri Ayanamsa is actually the one finally adopted by the Govt. of India after the Lahiri committee comprising of the ablest astrologers debated on the same. Its inherent drawback is the annual progression of 50 seconds which is different from the actual rate of 50.23 Seconds per year. Hence, some very minor inconsistencies crop in. We use this because we have not been able to better it. The rest of the stories on ayanamsa are exciting, seemingly full of arguments, but are far fetched. So, till we can better it, we stick to the best available.

ANOTHER ANSWER BY MR.NARASIMHA RAO

The only true test is that divisional charts should give good results consistently. If we change ayanamsa, divisional charts change. I never got consistent results from lower level divisional charts with Raman ayanamsa or other ayanamsa. Lahiri ayanamsa seems to result in meaningful divisional charts. For example, look at Sanjay's D-24 (chart of learning). Jupiter shows traditional learning. With Raman ayanamsa, Jupiter is in Taurus - a Venusian sign. Jupiter in Pisces (with Lahiri) describes best the Sanjay I know. Like this, we can compare divisional charts with different ayanamsas and see which one makes the best sense. I am sure even Lahiri ayanamsa has an error. It is more accurate than others, but it has atleast a few arc-minutes of error.

ANSWER BY PT.SANJAY RATH

None of the Ayanamsa you state are fully correct due to the simple fact that Ayanamsa cannot be a linear function. Besides, it is a well known fact that the average rate of precession at present is about 50.2425 Seconds per year, yet all the Ayanamsa only use 50 Seconds. Thus, a natural error creeps in. At present, the one that is being universally used is that of the Lahiri Committee (popularly called Lahiri Ayanamsa) of the Govt. of India that was set up to find the via-

media for all the different Panchanga so that the Calander and festivals throughout India could be uniform. The committee accepted its limitations in computing the Ayanamsa and arrived at the " most reasonable ayanamsa". I like this honesty and truth prevailing in the Report and its findings. They have left the door open for suitable changes when India is ripe for the same. Knowledge and mathematical base has to be stronger for this. In knowledge base, I refer to the understanding necessary to appreciate the concept of Chitra as in chitra Paksha, try to determine the yoga Tara etc. Others have tried Revati called Revati Paksha, while even others have tried Moola and Rohini on the basis of the initial concept of the RahuSikhi axis or the elliptical shape of the motion of the earth being shortest around there. I won't be surprised if another person suggests Rohini in the future. All this will continue for some more time, but not more than 20 years or so. Thus use the Lahiri ayanamsa till you hear something from us. OM TAT SAT
