My Technology Lesson Plan
Kindergarten/ MATH Common Core Standards: K.G.A.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. K.G.A.3 Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, flat) or threedimensional (solid). Lesson Summary: This lesson will allow students to explore and learn all of the different shapes and the location of where they are through doing activities as well as using technologies to further help them understand the material. They will be learning shapes that are 2D and 3D as well.
Estimated Duration: This lesson will take about two hours. I plan on dividing the lesson into four days, with each class period lasting 30-35 minutes.
Commentary: I would like to hook the students into this lesson by introducing them to different shape using real life materials. Such as showing them that a slice of pizza would be a triangle or a piece of paper is a rectangle. I am also planning on doing a pre-assessment activity using a glogster example.
Instructional Procedures: Day 1: First 20 minutes: Introductory activity/ Pre-assessment. Students will sit around the smartboard and with the activity I created using glogster, I will see how many different shapes each students know. The last few minutes of class, I would like to gather the students in front of the classroom. I am going to use some real life objects that are in
the classroom and show them what shapes they are and where they are located. For example, if there is a globe, I will say that the globe is a shape of a circle, and it is next to the bookshelf. Day 2: I will be starting on the lesson plan on identifying different shapes using the vocabularies. I will do more examples from the day before. The last 10 minutes of class, I will hand students a worksheet that I have made on google drawing. It is a worksheet that students have to match to the same shape but I made the shapes all in different sizes. It is a small exercise to let students understand it better and for myself to see if students understand the concept of correctly naming shapes regardless of their size. Day 3: The first 15 minutes, I will address the 3rd common core standard which is identifying 2D&3D shapes. I will focus on the 3 dimensional shapes. Students will be using the computer and going to different websites to further understand the concept of learning different shapes and identifying them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy8JmbFlnfs I will show students this short video on what 3D shapes are. The last 10 minutes of class, I will introduce the project to the class. The project would be for them to create a drawing on picmonkey. I will provide the picture that they will be adding/drawing on. Day 4: This will be the last day to work on their project. I will give them the whole class period to get their drawing done. If students have any question I will be around answering them. Some students may finish early, if so, I will have a worksheet for them that they could do to get extra practice.
Pre-Assessment: I will test the students by doing an activity using google drawing I have created with different shapes including 2D and 3D dimensions. This way, I can get a basic idea of how many shapes students are able to recognize. Scoring Guidelines: The way I will grade this pre-assessment is that I will have a checklist of every student and see how well each student knew the different kinds of shape.
Post-Assessment: I would like to assign the students a small project for the post-assessment using picmonkey and draw on the picture of the classroom that I provided and be able to describe any kind of shape they see and describe where those shapes are located using the vocabulary that was taught during the lesson as well as adding 2 other
objects of their own. Scoring Guidelines: I will grade the project based on these guidelines: Did the drawing include at least 2 different objects of their own? Did the student describe where it was located? Was the student able to define the shapes correctly? I will also see if the student was able to use picmonkey properly such as the overall drawing of the project. (colors, drawing, spelling)
Differentiated Instructional Support For students they are more gifted, I will let them add any extra editing or not limit them on adding different things using picmonkey. For the students who might be struggling with the material, I will teach them one on one to make sure they clearly understand what they are supposed to do. If parents or peers could help them, they could help as well.
Extension http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/preschool/ngames/shapes.htm The first website provides a shape learning game. There are different types of shape identifying games included within the game One of them asks to match different objects( objects are things like pizza, tire, donuts) with the correct shape. Another one asks to find the correct shape in the picture. http://pbskids.org/games/shapes/ The game is called Huff-Puff-A-Tron. It is from the pbskids website and it is a Dr.suess game, so I think children will enjoy doing this game to learn different shapes.
Homework Options and Home Connections This will not be an official homework, but if students are struggling with the core concepts, these are just a couple of websites that I found to give them extra practice at home if they have time. These are online games that lets them understand different shapes and parents could help them at home. http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/preschool/ngames/shapes.htm

Interdisciplinary Connections This assignment will include the art content area because the students are using picmonkey for their project. They will be able to use their imagination and art skills to complete this project at the end of the lesson. Another content area would be language arts because students would need to know how to spell the shapes and the vocabulary used to describe where it is located at. Materials and Resources:
For teachers
For students
Computer, laptop, ipad etc. any technology tool that would have access to the internet.
Key Vocabulary Above, below, beside, in front of, behind, next to.
Additional Notes I will make sure before students start on using picmonkey to go over some of the key features they could use since there are so many features on picmonkey they could use I want to make sure they are comfortable with using the web app.
