    Lesson 49: BOOKS OF JUDE & REVELATION
    TITLE: From the books author: John OUTLINE OF 2 JOHN: A. B. KEY WORDS & THEMES: Truth; Walk. The theme of truth transcends 2 John. This truth advocates love, knowledge and joy for believers who walk in these virtues. John uses his apostolic authority to command this walk of obedience and to warn believers of false teachers who do not follow Christs teachings. KEY VERSES: 1:1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11 HISTORICAL SETTING: John reveals in his first letter how a number of false teachers have broken from the church. 2 John addresses some of the problems associated with these erroneous teachers, who travel through the area at the expense of both the churchs material and spiritual welfare. At the heart of these heresies is a false belief called Gnosticism, which claims a hidden knowledge for its adherents. The Gnostic profess they are a special, elite, which keeps them from being accountable for right or wrong behavior. This letter is Johns effort to combat the ungodly conduct which results and to encourage true believers to withdraw all fellowship from these false teachers.     PRACTICAL APPLICATION: John instructed the believers not to give hospitality to false teachers. They were to do nothing that would encourage the heretics in their propagation of falsehood. In addition, if believers invited them in, it would show they were approving of what false teachers said and did. John is condemning not hospitality to unbelievers but rather the supporting of those who are dedicated to opposing the true teachings of God. Note that John adds that a person who supports a false teacher in any way shares that teachers evil work. -o0oThe number of itinerant evangelists and teachers had grown by the end of the first century; mixed in with the legitimate missionaries were others who were promoting heretical ideas about Christ and the Gospel. Little has changed in two thousand years. Advocates of unorthodox beliefs still attempt to confuse and deceive the people of God. This letter, 2 John should serve as a wake-up call to believers to be alert, to be careful, and to be solidly grounded in the faith.

    TITLE: From the books author: John AUTHOR: John the Apostle. DATE WRITTEN: Between A.D. 85 and 96 KEY WORDS & THEMES: Joy; Hospitality. The abundant joy which John expresses is for the faithfulness of Gaius and other believers who continue to walk in truth. The hospitality which they show to the itinerant preachers and other Christian brothers is a trait which the entire Church is commissioned to develop. KEY VERSES: 2, 4, 5-8, 10-11 HISTORICAL SETTING: 3 John, a book of only 14 verses, centers around 3 characters. Gaius is either a pastor or a church leader who consistently walks in the truth; Diotrephes is a disruptive and prideful leading man in the church; and Demetrius is the reputable layman who probably took this letter from John to Gaius. At this time there are a number of traveling missionaries who spread the Gospel from church to church and are supported by church members taking them into their homes. John uses this occasion to encourage such generosity. John was a leader in the church at Ephesus for many years, having moved there from Jerusalem where he cared for Jesus mother after the crucifixion.

    PRACTICAL APPLICATION: When you help someone who is spreading the Gospel, you are in a very real way a partner in the ministry. This is the other side of the principle of 2 John 1:10. Not everyone can go to the mission field; those who work for Christ at home are vital to the ministry of those who go and who need support. We can support missionaries by praying for them and by giving our money, hospitality and time.
