SIDELINE QUESTION: Why is it important to trust others?
TODAY’S LESSON
Have you ever felt helpless or been in a situation where you had no control over the outcome of events? Did you seek help from others whom you could trust? Life can sometimes feel overwhelming with no relief in sight. Even after our teenage years, there will be times when we just have to endure the struggles and keep going. Everyone has desperate needs at times that cause her or him to wonder if any help is available. Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of our faith,
is the greatest Resource we have in times of need (Heb. 12:2, NRSV).
I. The Centurion Asked for Help (Luke 7:1–5)
When Jesus entered the town of Capernaum, He was approached by a small group of Jewish elders who had an urgent request from a centurion. The centurion had asked the elders to go to Jesus on his behalf to see if Jesus would heal the centurion’s servant. This was a very special request. It was highly unusual for a Roman to ask a Jew for help, much less for the Jew to actually want to help a Roman. Most Jewish leaders were not very fond of Roman soldiers like the centurion. The Romans were the classic example of sinful people who disobeyed God by worshiping false idols, cheating people out of money, and performing other immoral acts. Despite the standard Roman lifestyle of rebellion against the Father God, this centurion was different: he was friendly toward the Jews. This made the Jews in Capernaum like him and want to help him in his time of need as he had helped them during theirs. The elders said, ‘He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us’
(Luke 7:4–5, NRSV).
Unlike the traditional Roman, this centurion came to Jesus for help. Jesus had been healing people in Capernaum and was known throughout Galilee. The centurion’s actions showed how much he believed in Jesus’ healing power. Like the centurion, we know that we can turn to God when we are sick or in need. There is nothing wrong with seeking support, even when asking for help to approach Jesus.

II. The Centurion Had Humble Faith (Luke 7:6–8)
The centurion had to have the ability to trust before he could approach Jesus for help. If he did not trust Jesus to fulfill his request and have faith that He could perform the healing miracle, then he would not have asked for Jesus’ help. As an officer in the Roman army, the centurion frequently gave orders to his soldiers and servants and trusted that those orders would be followed. But as a person in charge, he would not be used to having to ask for help or feeling like he did not have the power to do something himself. By asking Jesus for help, a Jew whom the Romans generally disliked and distrusted, the centurion not only showed a great amount of faith, but he also showed humility. He acknowledged his own weakness in that situation and placed his trust and faith in a Person whom he had never actually met, a Person he had only heard stories and rumors about. He believed in Jesus’ almighty power. As Christians, we, too, should have this level of trust in Jesus with a spirit of humility. We can come to Jesus in prayer whenever we have wants and needs. But just because we ask something of God does not mean that He will necessarily give it to us. Our faith in Jesus must be stronger than whether or not we get what we want. Having faith means that we trust God even when we don’t understand His
