Pinal County
Casa Grande area residents dont always have to make the trek to Florence, the County seat, to conduct business with Pinal County. In the past 10 years, the County has worked hard to make services much easier to reach for those who live outside of the Florence area. Pinal County offers services from sheriff substations to public health clinics in 16 different areas of the County. Not bad, considering that Pinal County has more square miles than Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware. It is the goal of the Board of Supervisors to have County Government and its services in more locations for residents convenience. In the Casa Grande area, the main satellite office is located at 820 East Cottonwood Lane. The District 3 Supervisors main office is in the complex, in Building A. You can schedule an appointment to see the Supervisor by calling (520) 836-0003. Are you looking to record a document, such as a deed? The County Recorder would be happy to help. Also located inside Building A, this satellite office offers Casa Grande residents the same services you could expect to find in Florence. The office can be reached at (520) 866-7486. The Planning and Development Department, Division of Environmental Health along with Building Safety are located next to the Recorders office. Are you looking to make an addition to your house? You are welcome to drop by the Cottonwood Lane location on Monday & Wednesday mornings and County planners and building safety professionals will be more than happy to help you start moving in the right direction. Pinal Countys Public Health Department also has a clinic located in Building E. You can call the Health Department at (866) 960-0633 to find out what services they provide in that clinic as well as times of operation. The Pinal County Sheriffs Office operates a sub-station in Building D; however, the hours are sporadic as deputies are in and out answering calls. To take care of your legal dealings with the County, Justice Court-Precinct 2 is located in the same complex. The Justice of the Peace has offices inside Building B. You can reach the Justice Court at (520) 866-7423. Along with the Justice Court, the County Attorney has an office inside there for special meetings and conferences with attorneys. If you have business with the Superior Court, the Pinal County Clerk of the Court office has personnel located inside Building B to assist you with your filing needs for more information call (520) 866-7406. For probationers living on the west side of Pinal County, the Adult Probation Department has officers located inside Building F. The County opened a new Juvenile Court Services Building, located on the north side of the Complex. Housed in Building F, Juvenile Court Services is an agency that is committed to reducing delinquent activity by offering creative and effective prevention, supervision, detention, habilitation, and rehabilitation

services to the youth of Pinal County. The Pinal County Board of Supervisors welcomes you to the greater Casa Grande area and looks forward to being of service to you. www.pinalcountyaz.gov. A Time of Challenge & Opportunity With the onset of 2012, Pinal County has taken some large steps to change our local economy. Even as the national and state economies continue to experience challenges and occasional flutters of recovery, the announcement of the Phoenix Mart development promises to be a game-changer in our outlook. This 1.5 million square foot building which will serve as a wholesale marketing center for U.S. and international customers in the Americas and around the world, will employ more than 3,000 people, most of whom will be U.S. citizens. More than just a one way portal for foreign-made products to be showcased and sold here, Phoenix Mart will facilitate access into China and other overseas marketplaces for local, Arizona, and U.S. manufacturers and businesses. Phoenix Mart looks to begin construction in late 2012 with a grand opening sometime in 2013. Western Pinal Countys cities continue to attract industrial and transportationrelated industries and businesses and the immediate and nearterm future is promising. The recent relocations of Ritchie Brothers, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Monsanto, and others is heartening news as well. Still ahead on our horizon are three more huge economic engines if we can bring them home to Pinal County. Union Pacific Railroad is planning a 980-acre classification or switching yard near Red Rock ($200M of construction and hundreds of new jobs) and the Resolution Copper project in Superior promises to pour billions of dollars of employment and taxes into our countys economy during the 40 plus years of its active mining life. The UPRR project is waiting for a decision by the Arizona State Land Department to put the land up for auction, and the Resolution Copper operation awaits Congressional action on a proposed land exchange involving federal and privately owned properties. Pinal County has also been working diligently to resolve lease issues at the Pinal Air Park and is very close to a successful resolution. Once the legal matters are over, work can proceed to plan a modern airport industrial park that will be poised to offer a multi-modal industrial and transshipping engine to power Pinal County and central Arizona. With these major developments taking place, the climate is ripe for small and medium-size businesses to flourish. Pinal County and the Casa Grande area is a place of wide-open opportunity! We at the County look forward to serving you.

Economic Development
Casa Grande is strategically located at the intersection of two interstate highways (I-8 and I-10) in an area known as Arizonas Sun Corridor. The main line of the Union Pacific runs through Casa Grande. Midway between Phoenix and Tucson, the city has grown to be the largest community in western Pinal County since its incorporation in 1915. Its economic base is a mix of retail trade, manufacturing and agriculture, while its market area consists of more than 91,000 consumers. Casa Grande was named to Gadberry Groups 10 from 2010 an annual list of the most notable high growth places in the United States. Its strategic location provides cost effective access to global markets. These factors have led to Casa Grande evolving into a diversified full-service area with manufacturing, distribution facilities, retail trade and tourist-related employment.
The City maintains several mature and new industrial parks with access to rail and interstate highways. Additionally, these industrial sites are located within a 45 minute drive of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which provides easy access to both the casual and the business traveler. tobacco. In addition, the Tohono OOdham and the Maricopa peoples settled nearby. Padre Kino, a Jesuit missionary was the first acknowledged white man to visit the area. He is credited with discovering the Casa Grande Ruins, as well as visiting the Akimel OOdham villages along the Gila River. All types of game were found in abundance along the Gila River in the early 1800s, which brought American trappers to the area. In 1846, Kit Carson guided an expedition from Santa Fe to California, traversing Pinal County along the Gila River. The same year, Lt. Col Phillip Cooke led a caravan of 402 Mormons, the Mormon Battalion, across Arizona to San Diego. This established the first viable wagon road across the Southwest. Two years after this flurry of activity, in 1848, the section of Arizona north of the Gila River was part of the land ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican war of 1848. The land south of the Gila River, which includes Pinal County, was acquired in the 1853 Gadsden Purchase. The Casa Grande we know today was considered the end of the line, as its summer heat gave pause to those who were intent on linking the established cities throughout Arizona by rail, 133 years ago. In the summer of 1879, when Southern Pacific Railroad stopped work on the rail line it was building from Yuma across southern Arizona. The railroad construction crews, who hailed from Yuma, stopped their work due to the hot temperatures. Supplies piled up at this desert stopping point and, by the time
the railroad moved on, in January 1880, the community of Terminus, meaning end-of-the-line, which consisted of five residents and three buildings, remained. A railroad station was left as part of the settlement later known as Casa Grande. That month, in 1880, seven carloads of hay and one carload of barley were delivered to Casa Grande for the railroad company. The construction boss, his family and 300 Chinese laborers arrived shortly thereafter, and began laying track to Tucson. By September 1880, railroad executives renamed the settlement Casa Grande, for the prehistoric ruins located 20 miles northeast of town. By the end of 1880, Casa Grande had 33 permanent residents. The town boomed as a railhead to mines by 1882. In 1886 and in 1893, the town was decimated by fire. All of the woodenframe buildings erected after the 1886 fire burned in the 1893 fire and the entire business district had to be replaced for a second time in less than a decade. Although the town might have died with each fire, the beginning of Casa Grandes indomitable community spirit stirred and merchants and business leaders rallied together to rebuild. By 1890, the town had 70 buildings and a diverse population of 256, including Anglo-Americans, Mexicans, MexicanAmericans, Chinese, Native Americans, and African Americans. A national mining slump almost killed the town in the 1890s and by 1902 Casa Grandes business district had dwindled to a mercantile store, saloon and two smaller stores. Once again, defeat was not in the vocabulary of the community members and this time, agriculture saved the community from becoming another Southwestern mining ghost town. It started with small-

scale agriculture and farm trade, along with livestock and vegetables, crops such as alfalfa, wheat, barley, citrus and cotton became important export commodities. The rest, as they, say, is history. Casa Grande of today could have disappeared into the desert like other early Arizona settlements but for the determination of its residents and the vision of the future that turned the endof-the-line into the progressive, friendly, community-minded city called Casa Grande, Arizona. Explore early Casa Grande at the Casa Grande Valley Historical Society and Museum, 110 W. Florence Blvd. Call the Historical Society and Museum at (520) 836-2223 for more information and a schedule of upcoming events or visit online at www.cgvhs.org. An Arizona Main Street Community Casa Grande is one of Arizonas 15 Main Street communities, working to enhance downtown by encouraging high-quality design, preservation and reuse of historic buildings, communityoriented activities and economic growth. This downtown revitalization energizes the entire community and helps position Casa Grande as a key shopping, service, and heritage tourism destination. For the twentieth year, Casa Grande Main Street has been recognized as an Accredited National Main Street Program.
There are 42 buildings listed on the National and Local Historical Registers within the downtown Main Street district. Of special historical interest are the City Hall, Heritage Hall at the Historical Society Museum, three restaurants, four churches, three business offices and Casa Grande Art Museum. The historic Paramount Theatre received a 2005 Governors Heritage Preservation Honor Award as well as three Arizona Main Street Awards. In 2006, the Mandell and Meyer business office building received a Governors Heritage Preservation Honor Award. In 2011, the Landscape Enhancement Project won the Best Small Scale Award from Arizona Main Street. Main Streets annual Historic Downtown Street Fair / Car & Bike Show, the year-round, bi-weekly Farmers Market and the monthly Arizona Main Street award winning Art in the Alley events are just some of the family activities that are creating a sense of place in the downtown. Many residents and visitors come into the downtown area to shop, to eat at the great area restaurants and to see the public art murals and sculptures. Peart Park and the Palm Island Family Aquatic Park are also close by for outdoor recreation. Casa Grande Valley Historical Society & Museum The Casa Grande Valley Historical Society was founded in 1964 as a private non-profit 501(c) 3 organization with a governing board of directors. Their mission is to oversee the collection, preservation, interpretation, and dissemination of the history of the Casa Grande Valley for the benefit of present and future generations. The Historical Society & Museum, which includes Heritage Hall, 110 W. Florence Blvd., is located in one of the most scenic locations in town. This 1927 Presbyterian Church is listed in the National Register of Historic Buildings. Stonemason Michael Sullivan built several field stone structures in the area including the Womans Club, private homes, and the WWI Matthew B. Juan Memorial in Sacaton. In 1983, the Historical Society purchased, and moved onto its grounds, an old grammar school building set for demolition. This 1930s one-room schoolhouse served as the segregated school in Casa Grande for several years. The teacher for much of that time was Rebecca Dallis, an African-American woman with a Masters Degree in Education. The schoolhouse, which was renamed in her honor, houses a permanent display depicting local Black history.
Currently, the Museum has more than 16,000 artifacts and over 22,000 photographs and documents that focus on the history of the Casa Grande Valley. The museums collections and exhibits include American Indian artifacts, ranching gear, mining equipment, agricultural tools, period furniture, quilts and other textiles, military memorabilia, letters, newspapers, ledgers, and many other items that reflect the history of the Casa Grande Valley. Oral histories are part of the evolving collection. Annually, more than 3,000 visitors from all over the world come to the Museum. Many of them speak highly of the quality of the museum and how well it depicts local history. Programs and events sponsored by the Historical Society include school tours, speakers, presentations, re-enactments, workshops, and outreach education programs. All of these activities are conducted and overseen by a small core of dedicated volunteers. Hours of operation are: Thursday-Sunday from Noon-4:00 pm. Groups of eight or more may be able to schedule a tour during other times, staff permitting. For more information call (520) 836-2223, e-mail: [email protected], or visit the website: www.cgvhs.org.

Casa Grande National Monument The Casa Grande Ruins were created as the nations first archeological reserve in 1892. The site was declared a National Monument in 1918. The Casa Grande (Big House) was built between 1300 and 1400 CE (Current Era). Between 1355 and 1450 CE, the occupants, known today as the Hohokam, an Oodham term, meaning those who have gone, began to abandon their walled compounds and villages. Archaeologists do not know all the reasons for the decline and end of Hohokam culture. Recent findings indicate that a series of devastating floods followed by drought in the 1350s and 1380s may have led to the breakdown of Hohokam economic and political systems. The Casa Grande Ruins, 1100 Ruins Dr., Coolidge, AZ 85128, are open daily from 9 am-5 pm throughout the year, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Entrance fee is $5.00 per person. Children 15-years-old and younger are free. American the Beautiful Passes, which include the Annual Pass, Access Pass, Senior Pass and Volunteer Pass are accepted at the Casa Grande Ruins. Special events and activities are held at the Casa Grande Ruins, including the Annual American Indian Music Fest in January.
