Entrance Matting

Choosing Entrance Mats. How to make an informed decision.

In this catalogue there are close to a dozen different
types and styles of entrance mats. Making a decision
as to what is the best entrance mat for your facility
can be difficult when faced with such a wealth of
choices.
There are a number of critical criteria if the most
suitable entrance mat is to be selected.

Mat Size
The size of the mat chosen, particularly in length,
determines the effectiveness at removing dirt
from shoes. The more often shoes make contact,
the more dirt is removed. It takes as much as 10
metres of matting to remove 99% of dirt. 6 metres
will remove about 80% and 4 metres of matting will
remove about 60% of dirt from shoes.

Traffic
Firstly the amount of traffic has a major bearing.
For instance, installing a mat designed for a low
or medium traffic environment in a major shopping
centre where foot traffic passing over the mat is
numerically very high, means quick wear and quickly
reduced efficiency as the mat wears. Wear does
not only mean destruction of the surface material
but also rapid flattening through developed traffic
channels.

Designa Vinyl Architectural Mat

Fibre Weight
There are two determinants here. Firstly, the amount
of fibre constituting the surface determined by its
weight and generally expressed in ounces per
square yard or grams per square metre. The greater
the weight of fibre the longer the potential life. In this
catalogue you will find mats ranging from less than
600gms per sq m to as high as 2000 gms per sq m.

Architectural Mats
There are also so-called Architectural mats, often
specified for new buildings, which have their own
positives and negatives and are often specified in
areas where they will not be ideal. It can be valuable
to seek advice prior to such specification.

Fibre Structure
Then the structure of the fibre. For instance if the
fibre is tightly punched there is a greater resistance
to traffic patterns and flattening than if loosely
punched.

Environment:
In addition the environment outside the facility has
a bearing because the type and quality of the dirt
being carried into the building can help determine
which mat is better suited.

Scientific Study Confirms

Benefits of Anti-Fatigue Matting
Prolonged standing on hard surfaces can lead to long-term circulatory
problems including varicose veins resulting in pain and suffering.
Long periods of standing cause physical fatigue including pain in feet, legs
and back, neck and shoulders.
A scientific study was conducted at Lougborough University Human Sciences
Department in England comparing the effects on comfort and fatigue resulting
from standing on floor matting on concrete floors and standing directly on the
concrete floor.
Both subjective and objectivity
tests were performed. The
results showed significant
benefit to users of anti-fatigue
mats compared to standing on
a concrete floor.
In addition the longer the
period of standing the greater
the benefit for users of mats.

What is special about kitchen mats?

To succeed in a commercial kitchen environment
and not break down quickly, mats require a high
percentage of Nitrile rubber.
Natural rubber has poor resistance to oils,
fats and greases. At least 40% Nitrile content
added to natural or synthetic rubber ensures far
superior grease resistance.
In addition mats should drain well as there is a
prevalence of liquid spillage in kitchens.

And, from a safety perspective, good ramping,

with a gentle slope along all edges where traffic
may walk on and off the mat, is an essential to
prevent trips.
Also, for safety in the kitchen the top surface of
the mat should be textured to reduce the chance
of slipping.
With good housekeeping so important, ease of
cleaning is also a very relevant factor.

What are Foam Laminates?
Foam Laminates are anti-fatigue mats consisting
of several strata laminated together. Usually a
tough vinyl top surface is laminated to a foam
material. The top surface is designed to resist

numerous mats that have been designed for
specific purposes. Clean rooms, for instance,
need special treatment for the finest particles of
dust and dirt prior to entering the area. Pools and

Wet Area Matting
Matting for wet areas has its own special
requirements. Obviously, the need for water
to run off or drain through the matting is most
important. Essentially the water deposited on the
mat should quickly and automatically run off the
top surface of the mat leaving, at all times, the
top surface dry or, at worst, damp.
The mat must be of such a structure that it

is gentle to bare feet and pleasant to walk

on. Many mats that may drain well are not
necessarily kind to bare feet.
Slipping, too, is a possible problem in wet areas
which is a good reason for the top surface to
drain well. Slipping in wet areas is generally a far
greater hazard than in dry areas.

The Care, Cleaning and

Maintenance of Mats
Mats supplied by this company are all made by
reputable companies using first-class materials.
Among the many features of these mats is their slipresistance. However, great care needs to
be taken both in the placement of these mats and the
care of the mats and the floor itself to ensure that the
mats are used in circumstances which will not allow
the mats or the users of the mats to slip.

all detergent and emulsified dirt is removed. This may

require more than one rinsing. Do NOT use solvent
cleaners, highly alkaline cleaners, hot water, or rotary
scrubbers.
Hot water extraction or carpet bonnets may be used
as they would on carpets. Follow manufacturers
instructions.

While these mats are, in themselves, not conducive

to slipping, floors that are naturally slippery or floors
that become slippery due to maintenance methods
employed or floors that are slippery due to substances
deposited on them can cause potential danger from
slipping.

Allow to dry before putting the mat back into service.

Avoid banging the mat edging or standing the mat on
end while storing or drying. Lay flat to dry. The dry mat
may be rolled but not folded.

It is essential that floors and the mat itself be kept

scrupulously free from all extraneous matter. This
includes cleaning solutions themselves.

Mats should always be placed on a spotlessly clean

floor, free of dirt, sand, grit, oil, fat or detergent or floor
cleaner residue.

Carpet Faced Entrance Mats

Except for those edges over which it is not possible
to walk such as an edge hard up against a wall or
except where a mat is to be placed in a recess, all
mats should be edged with specially moulded edging.
Such edging should be maintained in good condition
and repaired or replaced if damaged. Be careful when
polishing floors around a mat that the pad or brush
does not contact the edge. It is better in such a case,
to remove the mat during polishing.
The floor beneath the mat must be clean and free from
grit, sand or dirt. If placed on a shiny, slippery floor
the mat may need to be secured. On some carpet
surfaces the mat may move and should therefore
be secured. Various devices are available for this
purpose.
Vacuum or sweep the carpet face daily. The mat
should be dry and all dirt, grit or sand must be
removed. Oily dirt can be removed by washing with
a neutral, water-based detergent with warm water.
Preferably spray onto the carpet face, agitate with a
broom or soft brush. Rinse with clean water ensuring

Rubber and Plastic Mats

Solid surface mats, used in dry areas, should be

cleaned regularly with a neutral or slightly alkaline
(up to pH9) detergent containing NO solvents. Rinse
thoroughly to remove all traces of detergent.
Allow to dry.
Drainage surfaces with moulded-in holes should also
be cleaned as above. They should also be thoroughly
cleaned beneath the mat in a similar manner. Allow to
dry before placing back in service, keeping the mat flat.
It is essential to clean the floor beneath the mat as
well as the mat. In the presence of any oils or fats or
greases (e.g. kitchens or machine shops) the floor
must be scrupulously cleaned with a suitable floor
cleaning detergent. However, as such a detergent may
be strongly alkaline and may contain solvents, avoid
using such a detergent on the mat itself.
Once the floor is thoroughly cleaned, rinse several
times with clean water to ensure all detergent residue
is completely removed. If this is not done, any liquid
passing through the drainage holes may reactivate the
detergent and result in a moving or slipping mat.
