The Volkswagen Group's product range worldwide comprises more than 190 vehicle projects, with nine brands in more than 150 countries. The "Products" Group division is responsible, across all brands and business areas, for efficient and effective product development and implementation for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen brand. We devise the product strategy, control vehicle projects for the "small", "compact" and "mid/full-size" model lines and develop standards for planning and controlling the product process. Our tasks - as exciting as they are diverse The world markets in which Volkswagen successfully operates place very different demands on our products. Our customers in Europe, for example, have different requirements from those in India, and our customers in America differ from those in China in terms of what they want in a car. Our task is therefore to ensure that the right products are available in the respective market. For this reason, we use a modular system in vehicle development. This not only allows us to reduce direct costs and investment but also, for example, to shorten the development times for new vehicles.

Enlarge The Alternative Mobility department develops concepts as a basis for future, strategic product decisions. To do so, we evaluate new technologies, trends in research and, last but not least, our competitors. And the results are impressive, as demonstrated by our electric vehicle, the E-Up. The Product Collaborations department coordinates cooperation with partner companies. The Product Lines are organised according to the international vehicle segments "small", "compact" and "mid/full-size". Here we take corporate responsibility for the individual vehicle projects and the platforms concerned. In Product Planning, we devise plans for specific individual projects based on the product range. Part of our work entails determining the time and scope of individual projects as well as the requirements of the various markets. Using this information we define the vehicle's characteristics and examine the fundamental feasibility of the project. Product Control/Project Management is responsible for monitoring the vehicles from Development through to project completion and ensuring that the project goals are accomplished. These include the market launch as per schedule, attaining milestones and keeping within the target budget as well as product conformity in the respective markets.

Enlarge Our Platform department looks after the platform for a product line and coordinates its efficient deployment in vehicle projects of the Group brands. This involves agreeing on platform-specific specifications such as price, market, volume, technology and deadlines with the business areas and vehicle projects concerned. In order to ensure that the "Products" Group division is continuously optimised and developed, the Product Process department coordinates the development and implementation of standards for planning and steering the product development process. In Process Development we initiate innovative methods and processes and assist with their implementation in the vehicle projects. In addition to these tasks, we are also responsible for the centralised support and coordination of collaborations and doctoral theses with universities and research institutes. While new models and technologies are being developed at Volkswagen, new legal requirements may arise or existing market requirements change. This could be new specifications for catalytic converters or the implementation of new communication technologies, for example. We plan and manage these changes in the development process in conjunction with all projects, platforms and business areas concerned, within the scope of so-called "product maintenance". We ensure that the changes are implemented cost-effectively and in accordance with requirements by all Group brands and regions. Real-life experiences
