Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Introit Hymn Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and forever. We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. All may exchange a sign of peace. THE COLLECT O God, you are rich in love for your people: show us the treasure that endures and, when we are tempted by greed, call us back into your service and make us worthy to be entrusted with the wealth that never fails. We ask this through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING A reading from the prophet Jeremiah You who are my Comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me. Listen to the cry of my people from a land far away: Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King no longer there? Why have they aroused my anger with their images, with their worthless foreign idols? The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved. Since my people are crushed, I am crushed; I mourn, and horror grips me. Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people? O God, the heathen have come into your heritage; your holy temple have they defiled and made Jerusalem a heap of stones. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the scorn and derision of those that are round about us. Lord, how long will you be angry, for ever? Pour out your wrath upon the nations that have not known you, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon your name. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and wipe away our sins for your name's sake........................R SECOND READING 1 Timothy 2. 1-10 A reading from the first letter to Timothy Paul writes, I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle I am telling the truth, I am not lying and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. GOSPEL A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said to the disciples, There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer. Then the manager said to himself, What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people Luke 16. 1-13

may welcome me into their homes. So, summoning his masters debtors one by one, he asked the first, How much do you owe my master? He answered, A hundred jugs of olive oil. He said to him, Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty. Then he asked another, And how much do you owe? He replied, A hundred containers of wheat. He said to him, Take your bill and make it eighty. And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Masters, two and more, competing for our money, clamoring for our time, creating chaos in our lives. Divine Master, one God, quiet us and draw us near as we gather, this morning, seeking to be faithful, to know you in prayer and thanksgiving. God of grace, hear our prayer. Loving Master, with compassion and tears you call us to work for healing and justice; we pray for rulers, governments, and all in high office, that they may defend the poor and weak and enable all people to lead with dignity a quiet and peaceable life; may and those who create violence in the world be disarmed; pray for the peoples of Syria; bring to justice those who are corrupt, predatory or exploitative for financial gain; relieve all who are burdened by unreasonable debt; uphold any who are unemployed or threatened in their work, that all may find suitable and honest employment, and receive just payment for their labour. God of grace, hear our prayer. Lord God, you call the Church to be faithful in little and faithful in much, and appointed us as heralds and apostles, prophets and teachers in faith and truth; pray for our Bishop John, for our parish, and entrust to us the true riches of your grace, that we may fulfill your desire that everyone come to the knowledge of your truth and love. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Loving One, let your compassion be swift to meet us and our neighbors in this community, and heed the cry of those who are sick and suffering; for the poor and the needy, for prisoners and refugees, and the dying and those who wait with them; be our balm and our light to bring healing and peace and hear us as we pray for those who have requested prayer .... Reections on the Readings Two clear themes emerge from the readings this week. The first is the obvious one the subtle and seductive power of money to lead us into corrupt and exploitative patterns of dealing with people. Jeremiah bemoans the peoples devotion to idols (of which money is a significant one according to Jesus in Luke). Clearly, how we use our money is a spiritual concern. The second theme this week is that of forgiveness and undeserved honour. Jeremiah pleads with God for grace for Gods people, as does Psalm 79; The author of the letter to Timothy reflects on Gods grace in Christ, extended to all people, and embodied in the prayers of Gods people. Then in Luke we have Jesus telling a story of a master who, about to be dishonoured because of his incompetent wheeler-dealer manager, decides to

fire him, but has to reconsider when, through radical, inappropriate, forgiveness, the manager wins honour both for the master and himself, and secures his future. The pericope from Luke is a wisdom story that recognises that we live in the world and the necessity of being streetwise and judicious in our dealings especially over resources. The focus entreats us to not to be seduced by making money for its own sake, personally or as a community of faith, rather that we are shrewd and canny in order to be able to garner resources and share with the poor and the needy, in the service of God. Putting these two themes together what emerges is the power of gracious, generous forgiveness offered to all that lifts us to places of honour and connectedness, reflected in our fiscal attitudes and practices.

Memorial Table at Christ Church -The Memorial Table at Christ Church(the round table near the altar) provides a space to remember those loved ones who have died. Everyone is welcome to place a photo or a significant item on an anniversary of death, birthday remembrance or a special time. The invitation is for anyone to offer a prayer for those named and those who have place an item. Spring Working Bee at Christ Church in preparation for the Fete, on Saturday 5th October from 9.30am. Please see one of the Wardens (Sharner, Eric or Caroline) if you can assist. We will be mowing, edging, pruning the grounds, and giving a good spring clean inside the church. WANTED - Singers And/Or Musicians to form the Christ Church Music Group. Looking to support the "Nine Lessons and Carols" in December - need to start practicing early. Parish Fte Update

Saturday 19th October - With the Fte coming up next month, planning is well underway, and to be a great success your help is needed. Meetings - are open to anyone. Watch the Pew Sheet for the next meeting at Caroline Burge's (20 Chrystobel Way). Come bring and share food and drink as you are able. Volunteers - We desperately need volunteers. If you can help on the day, please offer NOW (rather than on the day). Stalls need to be planned in advance, and without enough volunteers we will have to cut back on stalls. Parish T-Shirts - We have two Size L/18 t-shirts available for $30. If anyone wants to order a different size, please see Caroline. If we have 10 or more orders this will keep the cost to a minimum. Raffle Tickets - Helpers are needed for selling outside the Kilmore Newsagency on Fridays 11th and 18th October and outside the Broadford Newsagency on 5th October. This is a big opportunity to sell our raffle tickets to the greater community but we do need volunteers to go on the roster. Kilmore please contact Sharner Mitchell, and for Broadford or Tallarook contact Lucy Staring. Spinning Wheel Prizes - needed; donations of any suitable items welcome brand new goods will be gratefully received. Auction - Auction is at the end of the Fete. Please contact Bob Humm for more information or if you have anything we could sell. Bottle Stall - There will be an adult bottle stall. Donations of any kind of bottle: sauces, salad dressings, shampoo, softdrinks etc welcome.
