or a break with a buzz there are plenty of things to keep you busy in Bristol. And if you thought the three-and-a-half-hour drive would make you want to retreat into the hotel for a rest then think again. For the quick-paced city centre will give you the energy to explore whats on its door step. We checked in at the Marriott Hotel in the city centre, where we had a room booked for two nights in an executive suite on the ninth floor. An adjacent NCP car park (12.50 all day parking for hotel guests) is handy or, if like us you will be out for most of the day, on street parking is a bargain at 2.50 after 6pm until 8am the following morning. The outside of the hotel doesnt give it justice when stood alongside the modern office blocks and shopping centres like Cabot Circus, but inside it is a superb four star standard throughout, from the entrance and corridor areas to the bedrooms. The bathrooms are cosy and the double beds absolutely comfy and you couldnt hear a whisper of traffic outside. We had a balcony overlooking the heart of the city which when lit under the night sky and glorious sunshine in the day, the views were amazing. The leisure facilities, including gym, sauna, steam room, 8m swimming pool and Jacuzzi are located on the Terrace floor along with the dining/ breakfast area. The pool was a nice 30 degrees in temperature so not too warm nor cold and is 1.2m deep so theres no deep end to fret over and the hot buffet style breakfast was the perfect fill-up for a busy day. Our first stop was Norman Parkinsons An Eye for Fashion exhibition (which runs until April 15) at M-Shed which is overlooking the river at Princes Wharf. Norman is one of Britains most significant portrait and fashion photographers of the 20th century. The portfolio represents the British fashion designers who laid the foundations for todays fashion industry. Displaying over 60 rare vintage photographs from the Angela Williams Archive, this unique portfolio evokes a sense of glamour, beauty and timeless elegance. Original 50s and 60s clothing from the museums collection also feature, showcasing high street fashion designs from this period. Once youve finished the exhibition theres plenty to see around the museum and just across the waters at Bristol Harbour is the citys Aquarium. Boasting an abundance of creatures found in the waters across the world, the aquarium is the best place to see the marine life in coral seas up close. From its giant windows and underwater tunnel, to the shark presentations and feeding time with an adapted dustpan and brush the only thing you may run out of is time. But the centre is set out in an easy to follow route and does not overload you with

With the British weather stuck with on and off rain showers, the sun came out to play for our day trip to Bristol Zoo gardens. Just a 20 minute drive from the hotel, the zoo and its gardens has lots to see and do we spent hours on end there and even revisited some of our favourite animals like the Asiatic lions which joined me in an early morning roar.

BUSY : Park Street in Bristol Picture: Tamany Baker

CUTE: A meerkat at Bristol Zoo

he favourite attraction for me was feeding time on gorilla island. With a new arrival just four-months-old it was nice to see the family of gorillas just monkeying around. The meerkats were just adorable too, posing in the midday sun like they were stood beside a fireplace. Theres the walking through bird house and butterfly world attractions to get you all in a flutter and plenty of play areas for the kids. To round off our action packed stay in Bristol we headed back to where it had all started in the world of fashion. The bustling city centre is any shop-a-holics dream.
