Brooklyn Urban Gardener Application

Please answer the following questions on a separate sheet, then attach to the form on the back of this page. Limit each response to 300 words or less. Only typed responses will be accepted.
1. Describe your experience with communitybased gardening, civic engagement, and/or urban environmental stewardship. 2. What kind of gardening do you enjoy, and how long have you been doing it? 3. Please list and describe any affiliations you currently have with community-based organizations or other volunteer groups and indicate if you are an officer in any of these programs. 4. The BUG program will involve a significant time commitmentat least 30 hours for volunteer projects and 24 hours spread over ten weeks for workshops. Describe how you will make space for this experience in your life. (Note: BUG activities will not take place during normal business hours.) 5. Upon graduating from the program, you will be certified as a Brooklyn Botanic Garden BUG volunteer. How do you plan to bring the skills and knowledge you acquire back to your community? What kinds of projects would you like to start or assist? 6. Participants in the BUG program will come from many different backgrounds. Describe any previous experience working with a diverse group of people. How would your participation bring a unique perspective to the BUG workshop experience?

GreenBridge, the community environmental horticulture program of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, promotes the greening of the urban environment and reaches over 50,000 Brooklyn residents a year through free educational workshops, conservation initiatives, and creative partnerships. The new Brooklyn Urban Gardener (BUG) program is a ten-week course of interconnected workshops that cover the basics in urban gardening and community greening. Working in teams, students will also partner with Brooklyn-based organizations to complete a real-life project and donate at least 30 hours to help meet existing needs throughout the borough. Upon completing the course and volunteering for 30 hours, graduates will be certified as Brooklyn Botanic Garden BUG volunteers and support greening projects at community organizations such as schools, senior centers, block associations, community gardens, and more.
