COURSE INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES LECTURES: Lectures will begin promptly at the scheduled time. It will be to your benefit to read assigned text material prior to each lecture. Bring your textbook to each lecture as my lectures come directly from the text and there are frequent references to specific Figures and Tables. In addition to being a course required for a Biology major/minor, this course also fulfills the General Education Requirement in Natural Sciences. The following learning outcomes have been established for this course as a component of the General Education curriculum: 1) relate everyday observations of the world to physical principles, 2) apply scientific principles to construct explanations of natural phenomena, and 3) communicate an understanding of scientific explanations of natural phenomena. EXAMS & GRADING: Five exams will be given on the dates listed in the class schedule. Please bring a picture I.D and present it when turning in each exam. Each exam will be worth 100 points and will include multiple-choice and matching questions. The first four exams exams will include only the material covered since the previous exam (not cumulative), although concepts learned in previous lectures may need th to be applied. The 5 exam will cover all material from the semester. You will NOT be allowed to take any exam if you arrive after any student has completed the exam and left the room. Students are required to take all exams. No grades will be dropped and there will be no opportunity for extra credit work. You will have the opportunity to earn up to an additional 100 points through the MasterBiology online module. Therefore, the total points available for the course will be 600. If needed, a makeup examination will be given for students missing one of the first three exams. This can occur only if legitimate, verifiable personal or family emergencies or responsibilities arise. These are limited to: death or serious illness of an immediate family member (parent, grandparent, child or sibling) or medical, court, University-sponsored or military obligations that occur on the day of the exam. Vacations, oversleeping, fights with significant others, flat tires, lost books or notes, highway congestion or not being prepared are NOT valid excuses. The makeup exam must be taken within four days of the scheduled exam unless verifiable extenuating circumstances are demonstrated. Individuals must obtain permission from the instructor to take a makeup examination by personally making contact with the instructor before or within 24 hours after the scheduled exam. Due to time constraints for filing of grades, no makeup will be offered for the final examination. Attendance per se at lectures will not be used in determining your grade, but it has been my experience that students who do not attend class do not perform well on exams. The following grading scale will be employed in this course: A (>88%), B (76 - 88%), C (64 - 75%), D (50 - 63%), and F (<50%). The +/grading option will not be utilized. MEETING WITH ME: Your tests grades will be posted on Blackboard within a few days of each exam (I have almost 300 students this semesteryour patience will be appreciated!). I will not post the actual exam. If you would like to see how your exam, you must make an appointment to see me. My availablity is listed above. I will bring the sign-up sheet to class and it will be posted outside my door at all other times. You are
welcome to signup with a friend (or friends) in one slot if you dont need to spea k with me privately. You are encouraged to email me or Lauren (your SI leader) for help and we will get back to you within a day or two.
