Ticker-tape Timer 1. The velocity and acceleration of an object can be measured using a ticker-tape timer. 2.

The ticker-tape timer consists of a steel strip that vibrates 50 times a second (50 Hz). This enabled the vibrating steel strip to make 50 dots per second on the ticker-tape being pulled through it. 6. Changing distance between successive dots on the ticker tape indicates a changing velocity, and thereby indicates that the ticker tape is accelerating or decelerating. 7. Ticker-tape charts can be constructed by cutting the ticker-tape into lengths with an equal number of dots on each length and sticking the lengths side by side in the same order that they were on the whole tape.

3. The constant time interval between two successive dots on the ticker-tape is called one tick. One tick is equal to 1/50 s or 0.02 s.

8. The number of ticks on each length is immaterial. However, ticker-tape charts are usually constructed with 10-tick lengths. 9. Each 10-tick length then shows the distance covered in 0.2 s and is therefore a measure of the average velocity during the time interval of 0.2 s. 10. The shape of the ticker-tape chart shows how the velocity varies at successive time intervals. 11. Some example of movements and their charts: a) Uniform or constant velocity

4. The distance between successive dots on a tickertape depends on the velocity of the tape. 5. If the tape moves quickly, the dots are far apart. If the tape moves slowly, the dots are close to each other.

- All of 10-tick lengths are of the same length. - Zero acceleration

b) Uniform acceleration

be determined from a ticker-tape by using the following equation:

- Length of 10-tick lengths increases uniformly. - Distance between ticks increases uniformly. - Motion with velocity that increases uniformly, that is motion with uniform acceleration. c) Uniform deceleration

13.The t is time taken from the first dot to the last dot of the distance measure. 14.Acceleration from a motion can be determined from a ticker-tape by using the equation:

15. The t is the time taken from the initial velocity to the final velocity. 16. Exercise 1 a) Diagram below shows a strip of ticker tape that was pulled through a ticker tape timer that vibrated at 50 times a second. What is the i) time taken from the first dot to the last dot? ii) average velocity of the object that is represented by the ticker tape? - Length of 10-tick lengths decreases uniformly. - Distance between ticks decrease uniformly - Motion with velocity that decreases uniformly, that is motion with uniform deceleration.
