Travelling to the Top End
Self-drive / Caravan / Motorhome
Excellent sealed highways provide ease of access into the Top End region. The Stuart
Highway from Adelaide, the Barkly Highway from Queensland, and the Victoria
Highway from Western Australia are sealed all the way. For the more adventurous
travellers, access into the Top End may also be made by way of the Savannah Way,
entering our region from Queensland on an unsealed road that starts at Wollogorang.
But no matter which way you decide to go, caravanning or driving, the Top End offers
an incredible range of attractions and top class facilities for our motoring and
caravanning visitors to ensure that your visit to the region is a memorable one.
4WD
Although a 2WD vehicle will get you to the majority of sites and attractions in the region,
to explore some of the special locations in remote areas a 4WD is absolutely essential.
Good travel advice for those using 4WD vehicles is make the trip fun, but keep it safe,
make sure you plan ahead for your journey and always advise somebody of your travel
schedule.
For specific information on self-drive access to some of the more remote locations in
the Top End region, and the truly unique experiences that these off-road adventures
can offer, visitors are advised to visit their local library or check out their local
bookstores for one of the many specialist guides available on exploring the 4WD
tracks of the Top End region.
By Coach
Darwin and the Top End region is well serviced by all major national coach companies.
Check with your local travel agent or direct with the operator for details of service
schedules, fares and tour packages.
Fly/Drive
Daily scheduled flights to Darwin operate from every mainland Australian capital city.
Darwin, being the closest Australian capital city to Asia, has regular international air
services from Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. It is possible when booking your flights
to arrange for a rental car, campervan, motorhome or 4WD awaiting your arrival at
Darwin airport. Airport collections attract a 10.5% fee.
By Rail
Great Southern Rail now offers visitors to the Top End region the opportunity to enjoy
one of the world’s great train journeys aboard The Ghan. The regular service from
Adelaide to Darwin stops at Alice Springs and Katherine before its final destination,
Darwin. A truly memorable way to experience the wonders of this unique landscape.

OUT AND ABOUT IN THE TOP END

Discovering Darwin
Darwin is a lively harbour city well-known as Australia’s gateway to world-class
nature and culture activities and experiences. With a population in excess of 100,000,
it is a destination renowned for its tropical climate and colourful characters. Sunset over Cullen Bay Marina
While the seasons of the Top End are generally referred to as the Wet and the
Dry, the traditional Aboriginal people of the area, the Larrakia people, have up to
six traditional seasons in Darwin. Their seasons correspond to which bush foods
are available at that time. The peak visitor time is during the dry season, from
May to October, when many festivals and events are held. The Tropical Summer
from November to April brings spectacular lightning storms and lush growth.
The humidity rises and thunderstorms and monsoonal rains rejuvenate the
landscape. Darwin is no hotter or more humid than Asian destinations such as
Bali and Singapore, with year-round temperatures consistently around
32˚ Celsius, ensuring a fabulous outdoor lifestyle
There is plenty to do and see around town or simply relax, recharge the batteries
and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. There is a huge focus on outdoor activities -
eating, drinking, shopping, movie-going, sailing and visiting the markets. You can
eat laksa on the beach at the sunset markets, catch a band at one of many live
Alfresco dining on Mitchell Street, Darwin CBD
music venues, cruise the harbour at sunset or relax in a deckchair watching a
movie on the big screen under a canopy of stars.
With its diverse mixture of more than 60 nationalities Darwin offers year-round
dining to suit all moods and budgets. Choose from fine dining at East Point, one
of many eateries on the Cullen Bay boardwalk, the family-friendly Trailer Boat
Club at Fannie Bay, fish and chips on Stokes Hill Wharf... the choice is yours.
Facilities
Darwin is a rapidly growing tropical city, with a number of international hotels
and resorts along the Esplanade and throughout the city.
Visit the military museum on the East Point Reserve, the WWII Oil Storage
Tunnels at the Wharf Preciinct, and the bunkers in Charles Darwin National Park.
Take a sunset cruise on the magnificent Darwin Harbour either on a pearl lugger,
catamaran or seacat. Prices often include champagne, finger food with some
cruises offering a full dinner.

Touring in the Top End
Whether you are planning on visiting Darwin for just a day or two, or perhaps making
Darwin your base for a longer visit, the range of tours, charters and cruises available
has something to appeal to all. For those visiting Darwin for just a short stay, there is
much to see within the city itself - some local attractions well worth a visit are shown
on pages 8-13 of the guide.
For visitors planning on spending more time in the region, the following section of the
guide lists a wide range of touring options. For example, on a half day tour from Darwin,
witness the famous jumping crocodiles aboard an Adelaide River cruise, or perhaps join
a tour to the award-winning Territory Wildlife Park and see native wildlife at close range.
Tours range from a full day visiting the attractions at Litchfield National Park, to up to
five or more days spent exploring the remote regions of Arnhem Land on a 4WD
camping safari - the choice is yours. A comprehensive listing of organised tours to the
Top End’s most popular attractions, including World Heritage listed Kakadu National
Park, Litchfield National Park, and Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) , is featured
in this section of the Holiday Guide.
Pages 32-34 of this guide show examples of fishing tours and charters in the Top End.

FISHING IN THE TOP END

Fishing in the Top End
Fishing in the Northern Territory is world class and there are many diverse fishing
habitats on offer; lush billabongs, big tidal rivers, mangrove-lined estuaries, a scattering
of islands and hundreds of kilometres of unspoilt coastline. The pristine coastal waters
are where some of the best tropical sportfishing action in the world takes place.
Darwin Harbour is full of exotic fish but those seeking adventure can head into
Arnhem Land, over to the Tiwi Islands, down to the Victoria or Daly rivers in the
Katherine region or into the Gulf region for a truly unforgettable fishing expedition.
Huge, wide rivers like the Daly and Victoria are prime barra haunts, as are the
networks of beautiful waterways found in World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park
and the Mary River area.
Fishing in the Northern Territory is excellent all year round and while barramundi are
most active from March to May, anglers can fish successfully at any time for a range of
species. The northern regions of the Territory are also home to an array of other great
sport and reef fish, including giant trevally (GT), queenfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia,
black jewfish, golden snapper, red emperor, coral trout and marlin and sailfish.
You can hire a boat or bring your own, take a fully-guided fishing safari, stay at a
remote fishing lodge or charter a mothership - every type of angler and every type of
fishing experience is catered for in the Northern Territory.
There are international fishing operators who only use the Northern Territory for
Australian fishing, which is testament to the quality. The Northern Territory is the
perfect fishing destination, because due to its close proximity, keen anglers can
experience a real challenge while others in the travelling party can relax and enjoy the
attractions of the mainland.
Must do:
Hire a houseboat and cruise along Territory waterways in a fully self-contained
houseboat. You can barbecue your catch on the deck and afterwards relax in
the on-board spa.
Book a spot on a bluewater fishing boat and hook up some of the big fish just
outside of Darwin’s harbour.
Head to Arnhem Land and stay at one of the remote fishing lodges – a true
Territory fishing experience!

Outer Darwin Region Birds of Prey display at Territory Wildlife Park
A short journey from Darwin city takes you to the outer Darwin region. The city of
Palmerston is the commercial hub of the area and is one of Australia’s fastest-
growing cities. After a morning’s shopping, travel further south along the Stuart
Highway and spend some time exploring the many attractions and interesting
historical sites of the region.
The outer Darwin region encompasses the areas east (Arnhem Highway) and west
(Cox Peninsula Road) of the Stuart Highway.
Turn left onto the Arnhem Highway and visit the small rural centre of Humpty Doo,
featuring plenty of mango farms and large properties. Further along you will find
Fogg Dam, a vast wetland which is a haven for bird and wildlife. Stop in at Window
on the Wetlands, a visitor centre overlooking the Adelaide River wetlands, and
learn about the flora and fauna of this area. Relaxing at Berry Springs Nature Park
There are a number of jumping crocodile cruises on the Adelaide River, which
operate year-round, where you can see huge crocs leap from the water before
your eyes. The Mary River National Park, enroute to Kakadu, is perfect for spotting
wildlife, fishing for barramundi or bushwalking. Travel off the beaten track to
experience Bird Billabong and see countless bird and wildlife in their beautiful
natural surrounds.
Cox Peninsula Road meets the Stuart Highway about 46 kilometres from Darwin
and leads west, eventually ending at Charles Point on the other side of Darwin
Harbour. Along the way you can visit Berry Springs Nature Park for a refreshing
dip in the springs, spend some time exploring the award-winning Territory Wildlife
Park, or take a tour of an orchid farm. There are a number of caravan parks and
fishing lodges along the Cox Peninsula Road where you can stay a night or a week.
Must do:
Take a cruise on the Adelaide River and watch as giant crocs leap out of the Lotus Lilies - Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve
water for bait.
Get up close with huge raptors at the Birds of Prey presentation at the Territory
Wildlife Park.
Catch a barra on the Mary River or in the surrounding billabongs and estuaries.

The Tiwi Islands
Tiwi boys
Just 80 kms north of Darwin lie Bathurst and Melville Islands, known collectively as
the Tiwi Islands. Europeans first made contact with the Tiwi people in 1705.
Then, 119 years later, the British established a settlement which was the first in
Northern Australia. This was at the short-lived Fort Dundas on Melville Island near
where Pirlangimpi now stands.
You can visit the Tiwi Islands and experience life in a modern-day Aboriginal
community learning about the rich and fascinating history and culture of the Tiwi
people on an organised tour. One and two-day cultural tours are available as well as a
one-day art tours. Visitors either board a small plane in Darwin for the short flight to
the Islands, or ride the waves of the Timor Sea for around two hours on a ferry.
The Tiwi people are known around the world for their distinctive fabric prints, pottery,
sculptures and carvings. There are several art galleries on both Melville and Bathurst
Islands and visitors are more than welcome to purchase directly from the artists.
Tiwi people are coastal Aborigines with a culture different to those on the mainland.
Their strong traditions, rituals and traditional foods are still a very important part of
everyday life today and they appear to have successfully combined both traditional Pukumani burial poles - Melville Island
and modern lifestyles.
The Tiwi Islands are also famous for their love of sports, in particular Australian Rules
football. The Tiwi Football Grand Final and Art Sale is held in March and is the one
time when you can visit the island without a permit.
Must do:
Try damper and billy tea straight from the fire with the Tiwi ladies.
Swim in the clear and shady waterhole at Tomorapi Falls.
Buy exclusive Tiwi Island artwork from the artists themselves - printed fabrics
clothes, carvings, paintings and pottery.
Have a go at fishing. A number of tours offer overnight camping or a stay at
the fishing lodge - a beachfront retreat on the north of Melville Island.

Adelaide River / Batchelor Adelaide River Township
The townships of Adelaide River and Batchelor are steeped in history, from the early
Chinese market gardens, and military presence during WWII, to the discovery of uranium
and the mining at Rum Jungle. The area was originally inhabited by the Kungarakan and
Warai Aboriginal clans - the first Europeans to travel through the area were members of
the Goyder survey expedition in 1869. The first settlement here was not established until
1870, a base for workers on the construction of the Overhead Telegraph Line.
Batchelor
Batchelor, 'the gateway to Litchfield National Park', lies just 100km south of Darwin.
Goyder's survey party passed through the area in 1869, and in 1874 a small roadhouse, the
Rum Jungle Hotel, was constructed on the supply route. The present township stands on
a section of land part of a demonstration farm established in 1912 by a Mr. E.L. Batchelor.
The area began to flourish in 1949 with the discovery of uranium by John (Jack) Michael
White. 1952 saw the expansion of the town when it became home for workers employed at
the Rum Jungle Uranium Mine (White's Mine), Australia's first uranium mine and one of
the greatest economic influences on the subsequent development of the Top End.
Mining operations ceased in the early 1970s and Batchelor came under the control of
Fishing at Coomalie Creek
the Northern Territory Administration. Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary
Education, in the centre of town, originally occupied the single men's quarters of the
mining company.
Must do:
Visit the Adelaide River War Cemetery.
Stop for dinner at the Adelaide River Pub and dine on barra and chips.
Visit the beautiful Robin Falls in Adelaide River. Just a short walk through the scenic
bush surrounds, the area is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Admire the miniature replica of Karlstein Castle in Batchelor.
Visit the Coomalie Cultural Centre and browse the indigenous arts and crafts.

Litchfield National Park Wangi Falls
Litchfield National Park is just an hour-and-a-half drive from Darwin and features a
myriad of diverse environments including rugged sandstone escarpments, perennial
spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and
historic ruins.
This 1,500 square-kilometre park was the original home of the Wagait Aboriginal people.
The Finniss exploration was the first European connection to the area and the park was
named after Frederick Henry Litchfield, a member of the expedition. For 75 years until
1955, the area was the centre for tin and copper mining. It then fell under a pastoral
lease until it was designated a national park in 1986.
You can spend as little as one day in the park, taking a quick dip in each of the plunge
pools and rockholes on the drive through, but to really experience the true beauty of
Magnetic Termite Mounds
Litchfield it’s best to stay at least two days.
Litchfield National Park’s major attractions are linked by a sealed road, although a
four-wheel drive is necessary to access some of the more remote natural attractions.
It is also possible during the dry season to travel by four-wheel drive down the
Southern Access Track to the Daly River Road.
The crystal-clear swimming holes and pleasant bushwalking trails make this park a
favourite among Darwin locals. Meals and refreshments are available inside the park at
Monsoon Cafe and the Wangi Kiosk, and you can stay overnight at a number of places
in the park that offer permanent tents or in the small township of Batchelor –
the gateway to Litchfield.
Must do:
Jump in a four-wheel drive and discover the dramatic splendour of Tjaynera
(Sandy Creek) Falls, Blythe Homestead Ruins and the weathered sandstone
columns of the Lost City. Florence Falls
View the spectacular double waterfall set amid the monsoon forest, 160 steps lead
down to the plunge pool at Florence Falls.
Cool off at Buley Rockhole, a series of cascading waterfalls and rockholes located
just 80 metres from carpark.
Visit Wangi Falls – one of the park's best swimming and picnicking spots.

World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, covering over 19,000 square kilometres, is
a landscape of contrasts. Beneath waters dotted with lotus flowers, saltwater crocodiles

Waterfalls cascade into pools fringed with paperbarks, pandanus and cycads. You can
view the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, browse through a gallery of ancient Aboriginal rock
art at Ubirr or Nourlangie Rock, or explore the scenic Yellow Water, a billabong teeming
with wildlife. Around 1,000 plant species, a quarter of all Australian freshwater fish
species, and over one third of Australian bird species can be found in the Park.
Kakadu is shaped by water, being the catchment area for the South Alligator, East
Alligator, Katherine, Roper and Daly Rivers. From November to May, waterfalls are at
their most spectacular and the lowlands are flooded, attracting millions of migratory
birds. The unique and diverse avian life in Kakadu includes jacanas, azure kingfishers,
cuckoos, rufous owls, magpie geese, jabiru and more.
The Nature’s Way tourism drive is a great way to explore the park. The drive runs along
the Arnhem Highway to Jabiru, then the Kakadu Highway to Pine Creek, and then south Sunset at Ubirr
A number of Aboriginal clans still reside within the park. Kakadu is home to one of the
largest concentrations of Aboriginal rock art in the world with galleries at sites like
Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock. Other spectacular landmarks include Jim Jim Falls, Twin
Falls, Maguk (Barramundie Gorge), Jarrangbarnmiu (Koolpin Gorge) and Gunlom
(Waterfall Creek). There are many established walking tracks within the Park, some still
accessible during the Tropical Summer.
At the centre of the park the small mining township of Jabiru offers a range of services and
accommodation. Cooinda, also offers accommodation, and is located on the banks of Yellow
Water, a billabong teeming with migratory birds, saltwater crocodiles and other wildlife.
Cruises on Yellow Water depart daily. A visit to Kakadu is best started at the Bowali Visitors
Centre near Jabiru or the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre near Cooinda.
There is a wide range of accommodation in Kakadu. Along with hotels and resorts are
some new properties, including Hawk Dreaming, a safari camp where operators have
the exclusive permission from traditional owners to bring visitors onto their land and
share an authentic cultural experience. Another of Kakadu’s features is the Gagudju Yellow Water Cruise • Cooinda
Crocodile Holiday Inn – a crocodile-shaped complex, amazing when viewed from the air.
Resort-style accommodation is also available at Cooinda, a village on the famous Yellow
Water Billabong. Family friendly resorts are located in Jabiru as well as at the entrance
to Kakadu on the South Alligator River.
Must do:
Cruise the Yellow Water Billabong and spot birds, animals and big crocodiles.
Take to the air in a light aircraft during the Tropical Summer (November – March)
for a breathtaking view of Kakadu’s majestic Twin and Jim Jim waterfalls.
Head to Gunlom Falls at the southern end of the park where it feels like you’re
standing on the edge of the world.
Take a cultural cruise on the East Alligator River.
Birdwatch at Mardugal Billabong or try the Mardugal Billabong Walk.
Call in to the Bowali Visitor Centre for the latest information on Kakadu.

Katherine and surrounds
Katherine Gorge • Nitmiluk National Park
While its star attraction is undoubtedly the famous Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge),
Katherine and its surrounds include great fishing, hidden natural wonders and a rich
indigenous and pioneering history. The region stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria
to the West Australian border. Around 300 kilometres south of Darwin, Katherine is
set on the banks of the Katherine River.
Katherine was named by explorer John McDouall Stuart in the late 1800s after the
daughter of one of his expedition sponsors. The area was renamed 'Nitmiluk' -
meaning 'cicada place' - in 1989 when traditional owners, the Jawoyn Aboriginal
people, gained title to the land.
The Katherine River flows through 13 separate gorges that carve their way through
the Arnhem Land Plateau. You can canoe, cruise and swim between sheer cliffs to the
sandy freshwater beaches of the main gorges, and view ancient Aboriginal rock
paintings high on the rock faces. Waterfalls and rock pools are found along over 100 Leliyn (Edith Falls) • Nitmiluk National Park
kilometres of walking tracks, beginning at the park’s visitor centre.
Must do:
Relax by the natural spring-fed crystal clear pool of the Katherine Hot Springs set
in picturesque surroundings with lush green lawns, shady paperbarks and
pandanas trees.
Cutta Cutta Caves. Located about 10 minutes drive from town, the cave is a series
of limestone caverns dating back 500 million years featuring
sparkling columns, pillars and flowstones of calcite crystal. Northern Rockhole • Nitmiluk National Park
Take a cruise or canoe along the magnificent Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk), and be

Craft Centre. An open day is held in Oenpelli usually during July, when travellers can
visit freely and enjoy the cultural activities without a permit.
The town of Nhulunbuy, is located on the Gove Peninsula, approximately 600 kilometres
east of Darwin. It is a major service centre, providing accommodation and supplies, and
offers spectacular beaches and great fishing.
