PROBLEM : CONDENSER VACUUM PROBLEM AND ITS A PASS AIR EVACUATION LINE TEMPERATURE BECOMING VERY HIGH PROJECT

: KOTHAGUDAM TPS UNIT - 10

The Station Authorities of Kothagudam TPS requested us to depute our representative to study and resolve low vacuum problem, Condenser A pass air evacuation line temperature becoming very high and abnormal noise in vacuum pump no.2 in Unit 10, while the Unit is in service. We have deputed a representative from PSSR and a representative from BHEL / Hardwar joined him later. Following are the problems reported by customer: 1. Condenser Vacuum was low even with two Vacuum Pumps in service. 2. The temperature of Condenser A pass air evacuation line becomes very high, which was at the order of 130 Deg C. and the other one is normal i.e. 43 Deg C. 3. Total quantity of air from Vacuum pump exhausts is only 30 kg/hr but the vacuum is poor. 4. Vacuum Pump No.2 was making abnormal noise. Following observations were made by our representatives:1. Seal water temperatures of vacuum pumps are high i.e. 49 Deg C. at the inlet to heat exchanger. 2. Vacuum pump casing is hot and air evacuation line was very hot. Even near the vacuum pumps it is hot.

3. Lot of seal water is over flowing from v acuum pump separator, Heavy steam condensation observed. 4. Condenser A pass evacuation air line is 130 Deg C. near condenser dome wall. 5. Location of tappings of air evacuation lines from condenser dome wall is different from Unit 9, which is shown in enclosed drawing. 6. Leak steam line and air evacuation line stubs on the dome wall are almost at the same elevation and near one corner of condenser. 7. Based on the above observations made, steam entry into air evacuation line by puncturing it, is suspected. 8. To confirm the above, load on machine was reduced and the leak steam flow to the condenser is made zero and steam supply to seals was ensured from APRDS. Air evacuation temperature of A pass has come down to 48 Deg C. almost equal to LP turbine exhaust temperature. Hence, puncture in air evacuation line is confirmed. Remedial action taken: Unit was shutdown. Air evacuation line of condenser A pass was inspected and observed a puncture in the line. Leak steam impingement on the air evacuation line might have caused the puncture. The punctured line was cut and replaced by new pipe with 1.6 mm thick stainless steel shrouding. Unit was brought back to full load in less than 24 hours. The rectification of raise in extraction pipe temperature has brought down the turbine vibration by 10 microns.

The vacuum pump was inspected through inspection holes and the impeller clearance (0.35 to 0.4mm) were checked. The valve plate was found in broken into two pieces on motor side, which was replaced. The noise in the vacuum pump 2 has also vanished. Director / APGENCO appreciated the efforts made by BHEL team in resolving the problem. BHEL / Hardwar will be informed about this problem with a suggestion to change the elevation of leak steam line with that of the air extraction grid to avoid such problems in future.
