Pastors Corner
CHRISTIAN ACTION AND CONTEMPLATION Hospitality is part of the culture of the Jewish people in the time of Jesus. This is commonly done by washing the feet and giving food and shelter to strangers. This practice is rooted in the history of the Jews when in some instances, their forefathers entertained strangers who happened to be Gods emissaries (angels). We see hospitality both in the first reading and in the gospel today. Hospitality always brings reward to those who practice it. In the Gospel, Martha and Mary showed hospitality to Jesus. But the way to entertain Jesus is not like the ordinary hospitality done by the Jews. When Jesus comes to visit, it is God who visits His people through Him. The kind of hospitality that befits Jesus is not about food, shelter or washing of the feet. He comes not to be entertained but to give blessings. He comes to bring life in its fullness (John 10:10). Jesus did not say that Marthas work has no value. Certainly, He appreciates all the preparations Martha did to make the guests enjoy their stay, especially Jesus. But Mary has chosen the better part. Jesus affirmed that while it is good to do something for God, it is certainly better to listen to His Son Jesus as He reveals what God does for us. In theology, we call Marthas part action and Marys part contemplation. Martha represents action and Mary is the symbol of contemplation. Action and contemplation are not opposite to each other. They are complementary and they are necessary for a meaningful Christian life. Action or work is a good way to serve. But sometimes despite the hard work we do, this may leave emptiness in us when we do it with selfish motives and leave God out of the picture. Prayer can also leave us empty if we do all the talking instead of listening to God. Mature Christian life involves both action and contemplation. Action should be guided by prayer, and good prayer should bear fruit in action. Whether we work or contemplate, God should always be at the center of everything.
