41. Germany; Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle; New Lneburg; 3 Taler; Davenport #LS146a / KM195; 1648-HS; 71.3mm; 86.29g; Christian Ludwig; stamped 3; Ag; XF. Thalers were silver coins used throughout Europe for almost four hundred years. It began in the beginning of the 16th century when silver was found in the area of Joachimsthal. Germans called coins minted from this silver Joachimsthal-ers, later shortened to Thalers. English translations to Talers and Thalers are common. The name Thaler eventually gave rise to Daalder (Dutch)
Page 9
and Daler (Sweden). Most scholars give credit to Daalder as the original of the English word Dollar, while some credit Thaler directly. Either way, there is no question that Thaler was the denomination leading eventually to Dollar. The Germans abandoned Thalers as a denomination with the unification of Germany in 1871 and the adoption of the Mark as the common currency. This put an end to the old units, just as the adoption of the Euro put an end to the French franc, the German Deutschemark, Italian Lire, and the Spanish Peseta.

RPC 2214. Octavian, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, rose to power as part of the Second Triumvirate, which consisted of himself, Mark Antony, and Marcus Lepidus. Lepidus was exiled by his more powerful peers, and Octavian consolidated his power with the defeat of Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium. After he had claimed sole power, he took great care to restore the centuries-old traditions of the Roman Republic. However, the real power lay with Octavian, who was given the title Augustus by the Roman Senate. Thus, he is the first Emperor of Rome. Augustus embarked on many military campaigns, claiming the majority of the Mediterranean world for Rome. An excellent administrator, he reformed the Roman system of government, greatly enlarged the road network, and established a courier system linking the distant provinces. At the age of 75, Augustus died, leaving his successor Tiberius with one of greatest empires the world has ever seen.
