1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? Throughout the module I have built my projects around the areas of design I am most interested in but also feel are my strongest design assets. I have done this to really hone the skill I already have to create a comprehensive body of work that reflects my practise effectively. This will in turn help me build a strong portfolio and help gain industry exposure. The assets I have concentrated on are the following; layout design branding and print, despite this I have had to develop some other skills through the needs of the industry but more so the clients I have worked with. For example web design and coding. Although these are not my main interests within design I recognise their importance within a digital industry and consequently have improved my knowledge and abilities in terms of understanding and designing websites and other online communication forums. Because of this need I have been able to learn and apply these skills to several projects successfully.
2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? Again concentrating on the areas of design I have particular interest and skill in I have been able to hone and develop my design production and methods of production streamlining the way I work making it more organised and more efficient as a consequent of this I have been able to produce a greater body of developmental work and due to that I can get a better, quicker level of feedback to allow for a more substantial response to a brief. This new improved way of working has been developed part through necessity, from the demands of the course, and part from the industrial experience I have gained over the past year and a half. Seeing the way people work in industry is very different to the way I personally have worked. What I have learnt has informed the way I work and hopefully improved my outcomes.
3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? There are many facets to becoming a good designer, and not all are design skills this is something the FMP module has helped me realise. Working with other designers, clients and gaining experience in professional studios do not involve design. They require people and personal skills, I feel this is something I have developed and feel is a strength of mine, I feel I can speak to new people openly and with diction and clarity, this will hopefully make them see me in a good light and have trust in what I say, this is especially important when working with new clients. In terms of design I feel I can continue the trust and belief from the client within my design by producing professional outcomes that meet there specific needs and wants from a project/brief.
4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? In the areas I specialise or would like to specialise in I feel there is always room to improve and gain experience to aid and develop my design and the way I work and produce work. I feel the only way I can address these area is to learn in a professional working environment, I feel I have gain all I can from a educational institute and my education now has to come from working along side more experience designer and working with real paying clients. This is the obvious next step as a graduate but it is also integral to my development as a professional and as a graphic designer.
6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an x) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 3 4 5 x Attendance x Punctuality x Motivation x Commitment x Quantity of work produced x Quality of work produced x Contribution to the group The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
