PADRES MANAGER BUD BLACK: What did you like best about Volquez tonight? The efficiency stood out. I thought the breaking ball really came into play today; thats as good a hook as a hes had all year, called strike, below the zone for the punch, I thought that was key. Threw some good changeups, fastball velocity was solid all game long. Again, when Volkeys on its the three-pitch mix in the strike zone. I thought today the curveball really came into play and was really effective. On Grandal catching Volquez again I think those guys have great rapport that dates back to their days with Cincinnati. Last year coming over hre and Yazi coming to the big leagues and being able to catch all our guys, Volkey being part of our rotation, you can make a case for really knowing a guy and knowing what he can do. Youve seen him good and youve seen him bad, I think that really helps a catcher. The experience one has with a pitcher no doubt helps him call a game and helps him work his way through a game. Theres no doubt those two guys have great rapport. How big was the relay play? Great play. The key now, we talk about this in spring training when we go through our fundamentals, the fielder has to go get the ball. He cant relax on that, hes got to stay aggressive, retrieve the ball, and make a throw to the cutoff man. Then the cutoff man has to be fundamentally sound and make a good play with a strong arm and make a good, accurate throw to home, and thats what we saw. It was a touch offline, but strength to the throw and Yazi got back in front of the plate, protected home. It was a big out for us, a big momentum swing for us.
