Minim um friction The turret is indexed with the assistance of two roller bearings between the body and the shaft, reducing the friction by 75%. This reduction of friction makes the turret easier to index. Positive indexing The clutch engages positively with the indexing knob offering maximum transmission from indexing to locking.
Mounting The NVIT turret is very easy and fast to install. It is directly mounted onto the lathe. Minimum vib ration The turret body is made of MEEHANITE-40 casting, to deliver high dampening capabilities. Safety The turret features a safety lock, eliminating the possibility of the turret tool head getting loose under extra heavy or interrupted cuts. Easy removable boring bar holder Boring bar holders are easily mounted and quickly removed. Five tool capacities available: Inch - .500", .625", .750", 1.000", 1.250" Metric - 12mm, 16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm
Simple and fast indexing The indexing knob's length and grip diameter makes indexing convenient with minimum operator effort. Turning the knob counterclockwise unlocks and indexes the turret. Turning the knob clockwise, when the desired tool station is reached, locks the tool head in position.

1. Body Meehanite-40 casting body delivers very high dampening capabilities. 2, 3, 4. Three Piece Hirth Coupling The three-piece hirth coupling is comprised of a fixed spline (2) mounted to the body of the turret, a rotating spline (3) mounted to the turret head and the indexing shaft, and a locking spline (4) mounted to the locking mechanism of the turret. This system allows the tool head to be indexed without lifting; therefore, eliminating chip and swarf contamination. Each one of the splines is specially hardened by the Ion Nitriding process and precision ground in order to make the splines more resistant to wear and increase the usable life of the turret, resulting in great savings. 5a. New Absolute Encoder 5b. Incremental Encoder The new, state of the art absolute encoder, used on the SmartDex CNC models, utilizes the latest technology in the optical rotary encoder industry. The encoder mounting mechanism and the flexible coupling isolate the encoder from vibrations and shocks due to interrupted cuts and crashes. The SmartDex PRO models use a rugged and reliable incremental encoder to keep track of angular position. 6, 7. Worm and Worm Gear Heat treated alloy steel worm shaft and aluminum bronze worm gear provide a smooth and quite indexing mechanism for the turret.

8. Air Cylinder A powerful air cylinder provides the force needed to lock the turret by pushing the locking spline to engage in with the fixed and rotating splines. 9. Bearings The SmartDex design involves thrust or roller bearings between all the moving parts to eliminate wear due to friction. 10. Shaft Hardened and precision ground indexing shaft holds and guides the internal components and rotates the turret head. DORIAN TOOL INT'L 615 COUNTY ROAD 219
13. Tool Head All Dorian turret heads for all models are made of durabar material to provide high dampening properties.
11. Stepper Motor A high torque stepper motor is used to index the turrret to the desired station. It is coupled to the worm shaft by a pulley and timing belt mechanism. 12. Thru Coolant System The thru coolant system allows the coolant to be distributed through the toolhead to the working tools.
14. Wedge Locks Wedge Locks are tightened by cap screws to lock the tools securely and rigidly on the tool head.
15. Sensor (not shown in the 3D model) A rugged and reliable proximity sensor is used to monitor the locked position of the turret. 979-282-2861 FAX: 979-282-2951

Step Indexing
Stand alone unit with Control Box Manually or automatically operated No interfacing needed Single step indexing (bi-directional) Easy to remove and install boring bar holders Thru Coolant System Large, high precision three piece hirth coupling for rigidity and repeatability
The SmartDex step Series is available in (2) two sizes, 20N and 25N. In set-up mode, indexing is accomplished by pressing a dual push button switch (forward and reverse) that single step indexes the turret to the next station. In run mode, the turret is indexed by moving the slide until the adjustable switch actuator makes contact with the electric index signal switch or receives an open / closed signal from the control. If the tool head becomes misaligned due to power outage or some other action that inhibits the turret from completing the locking procedure, simply jogging the tool head into the correct position realigns the splines so that the tool head locks in the correct position. The SmartDex pro Series is available in (2) two sizes, 20N and 25N. The PLC allows programming a full indexing sequence of operations (Program Mode) or programming individual indexing operations (Manual Mode). The turret is indexed by moving the slide until the adjustable switch actuator makes contact with the electric signal switch or receives an open / closed signal from the control. The turret is a closed loop system, with an incremental encoder mounted on the axis of the turret spindle to monitor angular positioning. A proximity sensor signals the locked position of the turret head ensuring safe and reliable operation. If the tool head becomes misaligned due to power outage or some other action that inhibits the turret from completing the locking procedure, simply accessing the Home mode can align the tool head. Programming Specifications
The diagram shows the working cycle of the SmartDex Step turret with a pre-stored program in its nonvolatile memory which is executed every time the index switch is depressed. Upon receiving the index signal, the indexer energizes the solenoid valve allowing the air cylinder to unlock the turret. After 0.1 second, the step motor is activated, indexing the tool head 45 clockwise or counterclockwise. When the motor stops, the solenoid valve is de-energized to lock the turret.
The diagram shows the working sequence of the SmartDex Pro turret with a sample programmed tool sequence of 1- 2- 8- 3 ... After finishing the turning operation with tool #1, the carrier moves backward and the indexing switch gives the signal to the controller to index to the next tool (#2). The controller executes subprogram #1, 45 CW, which is pre-stored into nonvolatile memory. The solenoid valve is energized and the turret is unlocked, turning off the proximity sensor signal. After 0.1 second the step motor is activated to index the tool head 45 with feedback signals from the incremental encoder to detect any error in positioning. When the motor
stops, the solenoid valve is de-energized and the air cylinder locks the turret, turning on the proximity sensor for confirmation that the turret is ready for the next operation. The tool sequence is entered by the operator, then the controller assigns corresponding subprograms to each tool station for the main program. The home position signal of the encoder is used with the subprogram #8 to find the home position (Tool #1) every time the turret is powered on.
The diagram shows the working sequence of the SmartDex CNC turret with a sample tool sequence of 1- 2- 8- 3 . . .The SmartDex CNC is an electro-pneumatic type turret which uses a Stepper Motor for precise indexing of the head and a double acting Air Cylinder for quick unlocking and locking of the Locking Spline. Optional Interface Box provides a Power Supply, Indexer, & Driver of the stepper motor which indexes the turret in increments of 45, 90, 135, +180, or Homing,
according to a coded signal received from the Lathe CNC Control through three (3) Select Lines plus Home (see table # 1 next page). It also provides a full range of feedback signals to the Lathe CNC Control showing the actual station where the turret is (see table # 2 next page) along with the locking state of the turret (Proximity Sensor "ON") and the proper air pressure for a safe operation.

Electro-Mechanical Automated Indexing Turret Decrease The Payoff Time On Your CNC Lathe By Increasing Its Performance with a PowerDex
The turret is a vital component of the CNC lathe. The operation and performance levels of the turret are crucial to the overall performance of the CNC lathe to achieve the optimum precision, efficiency, and reliability. The PowerDex turret was designed and built by Dorian Tool to deliver the highest accuracy and repeatability, the fastest tool change, and the greatest rigidity ever found in any other electromechanical automated tool system. By maximizing quality, productivity, and profitability, absolute CNC performance is achieved with the PowerDex.
Tool Capacity: Inch: 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1.0, 1-1/4, or 1-1/2" Metric: 12, 16, 20, 25, 32, or 40 mm

Positive Locking Force Three piece Hirth coupling Precision, rigidity, and repeatability Thru coolant system Meehanite body Heavy duty construction Intefaceable with virtually any CNC
PowerDex turrets can be interfaced with v irtually any CNC lathe. Reliable operation and the high performance of the PowerDex series turrets, increases the effective performance of your CNC lathe to achieve maximum efficiency and profitability. PowerDex turrets require minumum maintenance during years of operation and their cartridge style design makes servicing or troubleshooting very easy in case of a crash. The turrets have two easy-access lubrication windows to lubricate the internal parts from time to time.
The PowerDex design has a positive locking s ystem where a driver and a cam pushes the locking spline to lock positively against the fixed and rotating splines, creating the most rigid turret locking mechanism in the world. The cartridge style des ign of the PowerDex turrets, where the indexing shaft assembly slides into the meehanite body, makes the mechanics of the turret very simple and reliable during years and years of operation time. Cartridge style design and small number of moving parts means easy servicing and virtually no failures. The PowerDex family turrets are desinged with an Ion Nitrided and precision ground three-piece hirth coupling to provide the highest wear resistance, rigidity, and repeatability even under extra heavy or interrupted cuts.

Assembly
5, 6. Positive Locking Hardened and precision ground cam and driver (with extra heavy duty cam followers) provide the most rigid locking mechanism in the industry by creating a positive locking force. 7. New Absolute Encoder The new, state of the art encoder utilizes the latest technology in the optical rotary encoder industry. The encoder mounting mechanism and the flexible coupling isolate the encoder from vibrations and shocks due to interrupted cuts and crashes. 8, 9. Worm and Worm Gear Heat treated alloy steel worm shaft and aluminum bronze worm gear provide a smooth and quite indexing mechanism for the turret.

10. Bearings The PowerDex design involves thrust or roller bearings between all the moving parts and extra heavy duty cam followers in the locking mechanism to eliminate wear due to friction.
18. Shaft Hardened and precision ground indexing shaft holds and guides the internal components such as cam, driver, locking spline, worm gear, etc., and rotates the tool head. 19, 20, 21. Thru Coolant System The thru coolant system allows the coolant to be distributed through the toolhead to the working tools. 22. Damping Rod Hardened damping rods (with urethane springs) guide the locking spline on the indexing shaft to enable a perfect engagement of the three piece hirth coupling without any misalignment. 979-282-2861 FAX: 979-282-2951
15. Brake Powerful brake helps stop the motor at the right location to prevent any overshoot.
11, 12, 13, 14. Motor, Pulleys and Timing Belt Three phase, powerful, and high rpm motor coupled with a durable timing belt and pulley system provide lightning fast indexes. DORIAN TOOL INT'L
16, 17. Sensors Rugged and reliable proximity sensors are used to monitor the indexing and locking processes of the turret. EAST BERNARD, TX 77435

Turret Selection
2. Check if the center height, the overall dimensions, and the tool shank size of the selected turret are acceptable for your applications. EX. PowerDex 80N Data: CH = 80 mm (3.15") L x W x H: 624,6 x 186,6 x 228,6 mm (12.78" x 7.35" x 9.00") Tool shank: 8 Stations: 25 mm (1.0") / 12 Stations: 20 mm (3/4") Boring Bar: 8 Stations: 40 mm (1-1/2") / 12 Stations: 32 mm (1-1/4")
4. Check if the maximum chip cross section the turret can cut is satisfactory with your expected productivity. The above diagrams show the chip crosssection for a material with ultimate tensile strength = 60 kg/mm 2 ( tearing load Ks=220 Kg/mm 2 ). For other materials, Ax = A x Ks Ksx. EX. A = 4 mm 2
5. If any result of the above steps is unsatisfactory, go back to step 1 to select another turret and repeat the process. Otherwise the selected turret is right.

Cycle Description
The above operation diagram shows the sequence to be followed in order to move from position 1 to position 4, in clockwise rotation (with the turret tool holder disk in front). T he brake is first energized and the motor fed for rotation in the direction selected. When the falling wavefront of the STROBE signal for the previous station is arrived at, the pre-indexing electromagnet is energized as quickly as possible (within the maximum permitted delay time). With the electromagnet energized, the pre-indexing proximity switch signal is awaited, which confirms that rotation has been halted by means of the index key. Upon reception of this signal, the motor is immediately halted & the rotation sense is reversed after a 30 ms pause. The locking proximity switch signal is then awaited, before halting the motor as rapidly as possible & de-energizing the brake (within the max. permitted delay time). (OFF - ON - OFF) A safety check can be carried out at this point & consent for machining can be given, followed by electromagnet de-energizing.
