RAM GHAT : The ancient city of Ujjain lies on the banks of river shipra.

the number temple in Ujjain,it is popularly held, is so large that if one comes here with two cartloads of gain and offers only one handful at each temple ,one would stillrun short of offerings.Legend has it that Ujjain is one of the saptapuris,or the seven holy citie of india that grant moksha or liberaration from the cycle of birth and death. ujjain hosts the simhasth, as the kumbh-mela is known here, every 12 years, the latest of which was in 2013. MAHAKALESHWAR TEMPLE : Enshrines of the twelve jyotir lings and is thus one of the most sacred shiva shrines in india. The market around the temple, located in the heart of the town ,is also ujjains commercial nerve center. One of the most traditions of the temple, the bhasma aarti is performed here every morning (expect on mahashivratri) from 4am to 6 am. The site where satis elbow fell is consecrated as Harsiddhi temple. The sri yantra, or symbol of shakti is also enshrined here.te central deity here is goddess Annapurna. Her vermillion- stained image is seated between mahalakshami and maha sarashwati. GOPAL MANDIR : one of the largest temple in Ujjain, was built by the Marathas in the mid 19th century. the temple is enclosed by a high wall, pierced by a lofty and ornate gateway with distinictive bangaldar roof. The hugesilver plated doors of the garbhagirha once belonged the famed somnath temple in gujrat. Close to the gad-kalik temple are the bhartrihari caves on the banks of the shipra, and the shrine of pir matsyendranath, said to be the of the nath sect of shaivism. KAL BHAIRAV TEMPLE : the antiquity of kal bhairav temple finds mention in the skanda purana. The present structure,built in the 18th century, is surrounded by high walls with a large deepstambha facing it. The near by ram janardan temple, is one of Ujjains architectural gems. Thetemple dedicated to ram and Vishnu janardan were built in the 17th century by raja jai singh,the governer of Ujjain under emperor Aurangzeb. MANGALNATH TEMPLE : mangalnath temple is mentined in the matsya puran as the birth place of mars(mangal). The garbhagirha enshrines an image of shiva in his mahadev manifestation. VED SHALA : Locally known as jantar mantar, is an observatory built in the !7th century by raja jai singh(1688-1743). It is located on the Ujjain fatehbad road, 2 kms from mahakaleshwar temple. Jai singh also constructed similar observatories in jaipur, delhi and varansi. Ujjain enjoyed a position of pre-eminence as a center of learning in an cient india. Sandipani ashram is where lord Krishna and his friend sudama received their early instructions from guru sandipani. The ashram still exists in the ankapata area of Ujjain. within the pricincts of the ashram is a sacred tank known as gomti kund, where Krishna is said to have called all the holly rivers so that his guru would not have to travel to distant places on pilgrimage. The scenic kaliadeh place was constructed in 1458 during the reign of Mahmud khilji of malwa. The beautiful place, located on a small island on the shipra with man-made tanks and waterways inside on

the complex, excudes the illusion that the entire structure is floating on the sacred water. The place complex was restored by madhorao scindia of gwalior in the 1920s. Vikram kirti mandir was established in 1944 to mark the second millennium of the vikram era. It houses the scindia oriental research institute (sori), a rich library, an archaeologicalmuseum,an art gallery and an auditorium. HOW TO REACH : By Air: Nearest airport is devi ahilya bai international airport at indore(55kms). By Rail: Ujjain has its own railway station which is well connected to the major cities of india.
