Why is an afterschool program important for Williamstown families & students?

According to the Vermont Center for Afterschool Excellence, quality afterschool programs give young people the opportunity to explore new ways of learning, to acquire new skills, and to form positive relationships with adults in their community. Good afterschool experiences literally help build a foundation that can transform a young person into a productive and engaged member of our community. When that happens, we all benefit.

How is ONWARD! funded?

In 2008, Orange North Supervisory Union applied for and received a five-year 21st Century Community Learning Center grant. The $200,000 award was divided between the two Williamstown schools, Orange Center School, and Washington Village School. For the first 3 years of the grant, the award amount remained at 100% of the original grant. In year 4, the grant amount was reduced by 25% and now by 35% in this fifth year. As the program costs have come to notably exceed the amount of funding, the program has thus far managed to survive by fundraising, cutting costs, winning small grants, and levying participation fees. It is apparent that the ONWARD! Afterschool Program meets the needs of families and the community and offers programs of interest to students. For that reason, ONSU is in the process of applying for another five-year grant. If funded, the maximum amount of the grant will be $100,000, with Williamstowns portion of the grant totaling up to $80,000. With an operating budget of $160,000, we must demonstrate the ability to sustain the remainder in order to continue our programming. ONSU is asking Williamstown voters to support the project by approving the use of $40,000 from a Fund Balance surplus account. This request will have no effect on the school budget or taxes.
