Dear readers, I wrote the following speech (outline) in the fall of 2004 for a Public Speaking class at the

beginning of my junior year in college. My speech was written as a way to express my own desperation and fears. Times have changed, but the question of Autism still has not been answered. Today, my kids are doing well. Of course, they will always be dependent on someone else to be taken care. It is always a struggle to think about their future. I remain strong and hopeful that they will be safe and protected, and I hope that I will help someone else by sharing my speech. Best regards, Sergio Descart Purpose: I want my audience to understand how Autism affects the development of children. I. Introduction

A. The Birth of a child brings hope, satisfaction, happiness, and many other feelings.
Even before a child is born, parents have a tendency to start imagining a great future for their child, a future that is filled with expectations and ambitions. They think about his or her first steps, first words, first sentences and first questions. They imagine the childs first day of school, going away to college, marriage and kids. Everything sounds wonderful, but imagine you are awakening into a nightmare realizing that all you have imagined for your child has collapsed by something you did not expect. Something absolutely not planned. Now you are confused, and you dont know what to do. You dont know what you are facing. After assuming a position of denial, you are confronted with the truth, as I was. I had to accept the fact that my two boys, Isaias and Sebastian, have Autism. Because of the large increase in cases, not only in the U.S., but also in the world, Autism is very common these days. Anyone can be affected by it. Autism does not discriminate. It can be found in all races and in all ethnic groups. We need to understand Autism in order to identify it. If we found ourselves affected by it, we will be able to face it, directly or indirectly (your own child or help someone else). To understand it, we need to know what Autism is and its characteristics.

Body of the Speech

A.

Autism can be defined and categorized by its characteristics. 1. Autism is a complex biological disorder that generally lasts throughout a persons lifetime. It is also considered a developmental disability because it affects the way a person grows and develops. 2. There are three major problems affecting the development of a child with Autism. a. b. c. Communication- verbal (spoken) and non verbal (unspoken) Social Interaction- Physical (hugging and holding) and Verbal (such as having a conversation) Routine or repetitive behaviors repeating words or actions over and over 1) 2) Obsessively following routine or schedule for their actions Having specific ways of arranging their belongings

3. Autism can also be defined by its symptoms and related disorders. a. Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD, is another way in which doctors describe children with mild or severe symptoms or symptoms that fall anywhere in between. (Graphic Illustration)

1) ASD conditions include: (a) (b) (c) (d) Autistic disorder (classic Autism) Asperger Syndrome Childhood disintegrative disorder Rett syndrome

(e) Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS) or a typical Autism

4. Even though the causes of autism are still unknown, there are several theories that have helped some parents to draw conclusions to improve the lives of their children. 1) One theory of the causes of Autism connects it directly to genetics. a. Two studies conducted by the Network on the Neurobiology and Generic of Autism concluded that some people with autism could have an error in their genes making them more likely to develop Autism. Researches are also looking into other factors that could be related to the causes of Autism including neurological, infections, metabolic, immunologic and environmental. 2) Other theories blame vaccines directly as the cause of autism. a. Some experts believe that the presence of metals like mercury in vaccines could be the cause of Autism in some children. This theory is based on two factors: (1) The age in which the child received the shot and (2) The ability of the body to eliminate metals b. Other experts believe that some children have intolerance to some foods. Some diets have shown improvements and even reasons to believe in a cure for autism. (1) Reactions: the presence of certain ingredients in foods causes behavioral reactions when they are absorbed by the body (casein or gluten diet) (2) Reactions :(Bags under the eyes, runny nose, hyperactivity, cravings) c. There are several and diverse characteristics to identify Autism in children.

(1) A way to identify autism is when children dont follow normal patterns of growth.

a. Do not babble or coo by 12 months of age. b. Do not gesture (point, wave, grasp) by 12 months of age. c. Do not say single words by 16 months of age. d. Do not say two-words by 24 months of age (rather than just repeating what it has been said to them). e. Have lost any language or social skills at any age. (2) Children with Autism lack communication skills. a. b. c. d. They do not point or wave. They seem to be deaf. Do not respond to their name. They cannot speak words, but instead they produce mooing sounds.

(3) Children with Autism have serious behavioral issues. a. Since children with autism cannot communicate effectively, they tend to get frustrated, angry and aggressive having a tantrum or fit of temper. b. They hurt themselves because of the same reasons c. Some children with autism have issues with certain high pitch sounds. III. Conclusion

A. We need to understand Autism, so that if we found ourselves affected by it, we will be able to face it, directly or indirectly. Today we have explored the meaning of Autism, the believed causes and how to identify its symptoms. B. Most parents, when they are faced with autism, try to find an answer to the reason as to why their child has Autism. However, one can go crazy trying to answer the question. The question does not have an answer as yet. Many times, we blame ourselves, as if we should have known the outcome of the situation. When in actuality, it has not been proven what causes

Autism. One thing is certain; we cannot lose hope, and no matter what, love your kids and accept them. My name is Sergio Descart, and I love my two Autistic boys.
