This is an annotated list of selected print and online research tools that cover the discipline of political science. The guide is intended to identify and describe general resources for political science research. All the sources described in this guide are located in the U.S.C. Library system. To search for books, conference proceedings, and other monographs associated with the field of political science, search HOMER, the online library catalog [http://library.usc.edu/]. To identify articles concerning this topic in scholarly journals, consult the section in this guide entitled, "Indexes and Abstracts." The foreword includes a descriptive time line of political events in US history, divided into eras, such as "Jackson Era," "First New D eal," and "New Frontier and Great Society." The appendix features a list of acronyms and abbreviations used by writers and scholars. An excellent starting point for scholars, students, and general readers.

Produced under the auspices of the Research Committee of Legislative Specialists, International Political Science Association, and Commonwealth Parliamentary Society, this encyclopedia offers readers a timely and inclusive survey of parliamentary systems containing 185 entries describing almost 200 national assemblies; information is current through June 1997. An informative introductory essay outlines variations in structure, character, influence, and purpose among parliamentary governments. These differences are subsequently given greater detail in the country profiles. So far as possible contributors follow a standard format for each country that includes the historical background of parliamentary development, organization and procedures, the legislative process, elections, and parties. N ot surprisingly the focus and length of parliamentary profiles varies according to national history and the openness of political systems. Profiles range in length from one to more than 15 pages. The work concludes with a collection of specialized essays on selected themes (e.g., legislative committees, voting behavior, lobbying, minority members, the new democracies of Central Europe) and essays on the UN General Assembly and the European Parliament. Contributors include more than 90 experts in the field. The writing is clear and accessible and there is a useful glossary.

Key concepts, controversial issues, and important political thinkers are clearly described and analyzed, with examples from current events. Ideologies are not only placed in historical context but related to contemporary politics. A chronology gives a linear presentation of the evolution of political thinking.

Includes biographical sketches of more than 300 persons considered founders of some 180 modern nations. The sketches are arranged alphabetically, range from one to several double-column pages, list references to secondary sources, and occasionally include a photograph. An "Entry Locator" near the front lists nations alphabetically and gives for each the names of founders. An appendix, "Country Profiles," supplies one or two paragraphs on the history of each nation, which is sometimes helpful in tying together the roles of multiple founders. Many countries are credited with a single founder (e.g., Comoros, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Sweden); others have several. Only founders of modern regimes are selected, hence Lenin, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon are excluded. Nations with unsettled recent histories earn multiple founders. Also contains brief country profiles, a chronology, and a bibliography of sources.

Over 2000 authoritative and up-to-date biographies, compiled by a team of international contributors and advisers, detail the lives and achievements of those men and women who have been instrumental in shaping political events and opinion in all parts of the world. In addition, over ninety major figures have their own feature-length biographies that assess their political significance in greater depth. The global and topical coverage is supplemented by quotations by or about people in the book. Selected guides to further reading point the reader to the other biographies available. Tables of the prime ministers, presidents, and other political leaders on many countries, and an index of leaders by country, are also included for quick reference.

The book includes the previous essays from the first edition but updates essays for 86 subjects who continued to contribute to the profession, and it adds 22 new persons who reflect more recent directions and controversies in research. Those chosen were based on reputation, an examination of recent journals, and the theoretical significance of their publications. The time span begins with the Spartacus rebellion and covers a broad range of uprisings, events, concepts, and people as recent as the Persian Gulf W ar (under "Kurdish Revolt in Iraq") and the overthrow of the Soviet Union in 1991 (under "Communist Party" and "Gorbachev"). The contributors, scholars from all over the world, cover a wide geographical range with entries on individual countries as well as events. The range of biographies includes Gandhi, Hitler, Benito Juarez, and Martin Luther. Concepts meriting their own entries include anarchism, chartism, socialism, and Zionism. CIAO is designed to be the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. Communication and Mass Media Complete (CMMC), provides comprehensive access to scholarly research in areas related to communication and mass media. The database incorporates the content of CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass M edia Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study to create a research and reference resource of significant scope and depth encompassing the breadth of the communication discipline. International Political Science Abstracts is the global standard for scholarly research in the field. Approximately 95% of the records include abstracts, with most written in English. Published in print as the American Public Opinion Index and the American Public Opinion Data on microfiche, this online version contains more than 12,000 surveys conducted in the U.S. and sixty other countries are included, with 250,000 questions and responses and some 3,000 subject headings. Keyword searching is possible and is important since the precise form of words used in a survey question may influence the results. Data from 700 polling organizations is surveyed and included in the database. Searches can provide historical highlights and explanations of polling terms; and the ability to limit searches to one or a combination of topic, question, universe, data, source, and results. Also included in each record is the polling organization responsible for the work, the date the information was released, the sample size, and universe, i.e., the groups or areas included in the interview, such as parents with children in public schools, Great Britain, the United States, or California. All the surveys reported here were conducted using scientifically selected random samples. Callers to 900 numbers, readers who clip surveys from newspapers or magazines and send them in, or other similarly self-selected respondents are excluded because it is not possible to generalize from the findings of such polls.

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is one of the world's leading archives of social science data, specializing in data from surveys of public opinion. Most of the data are from the United States, but over 50 nations are represented. The iPOLL database produced by the Center contains nearly half a million survey questions and answers asked in the U.S. over the last seventy years by more than 150 survey organizations, including all the major academic, commercial and media survey organizations in the United States. The database offers nearly half a million survey questions and is the best discovery aid to locate public opinion polls rich in a particular subject to analyze further. The Congressional Research Service, an arm of the Library of Congress, serves the legislative process by providing Congress with non-partisan and in-depth legislative research and analysis on a variety of topics. CRS produces or updates more than 3,000 studies and other publications each year, none of which are distributed to the public. Because CRS reports are created using public money and are not readily accessible to the research community, the Thurgood Marshall Law Library has created a directory of digitized reports. Focus of the collection is on homeland security and health care policy but the site includes reports covering many other topics as well as other CRS collections on the Internet.
