How to Shop for a Sawmill

Buying a sawmill is an important decision. First and foremost, you should buy from a company that you can trust. Next, look at the performance functions. A sawmills performance can be narrowed down to tHRee key areas: power, operation, and log handling. We have highlighted these areas to help you in your decision making process. As you do your research, you will find there are different brands and different options, and understanding these areas will lead you to a mill that fits your needs. We believe it will lead you to Wood-Mizer.

Walk-along The walk-along operating position gives you a watchful eye over the quality of your cut, any possible obstacles, the cutting speeds, and blade performance. Walk-along controls are standard on all models, because sometimes there is no substitute for being there. Ride-along The ride-along seat travels with the sawmill head controls, giving you the same visibility and benefits of walking but without the steps. Mills with ride-along controls bring convenience and efficiency to your operation. Ideal for a two-person sawing team.
This option can be added to any LT40-LT70 model mill.
To decide whether you need a gas, diesel, or electric power plant, determine your mill use. When you need portability, gas or diesel is your answer. Wood-Mizer offers the worlds best engines with a proven track record of performing in climates found in North America. For stationary applications, electric motor mills provide the best results. Compared to gas or diesel, they are less expensive to purchase, operate, and maintain. Electric mills are also quieter, cleaner, and have a longer life.

There are two main things to look for when you are determining the sawmill operation: Feed System and Operator Control Location. Feed system is how you move the sawmill head through the cut. Wood-Mizer models fall into one of three types: push, crank, or electronic. With the push feed system you easily move the head through the cut, keeping a steady pace. The crank feed system features a hand crank that you turn, allowing the head to travel smoothly down the track. The advanced electronic feed system uses an electronic motor to automatically power the head down the log.
Wireless Remote Head Controls Use the Wireless Remote option to manage all the basic head control functions (up/down, forward/reverse, blade guide arm, debarker, & blade engage/disengagement) from any practical viewing distance. This selection gives you the freedom to move around the mill as the blade is making the cut, to better view the cutting process from all angles. When you choose the Wireless Remote, the controls are at your fingertips, but you can also use the traditional walk-along function or add the optional operator seat. With the Wireless Remote, you get maximum versatility and flexibility.
This option is available for all LT40 Super, LT50, & LT70 non-remote models. Must be ordered at time of purchase of the original sawmill (not retrofittable.)

Crank
Command Control The Command Control puts you at a fixed location at the front of the mill and gives you the ability to control all head and hydraulic bed functions. Allowing you to sit or stand, this all-in-one operator station sends signals to the sawmill so each cut and log rotation is effortless.
This option is available for LT40 Hydraulics with SimpleSet Setworks and LT40 Super Hydraulic and LT50 models with Accuset 2 Setworks. Also available on the LT70 which includes a pedestal allowing you to move the command control anywhere within 6 around the sawmill. It must be ordered at time of purchase of the original sawmill (not retrofittable.) This option is limited to a 6 bed extension on LT40 and LT50 models (no extension available for LT70).
operator Control Location is where you are positioned when you operate the sawmill. With Wood-Mizer, you have more choices and more freedom. You can choose which operator location you desire based on your mill selection. The basic manual mills are limited to pushing or cranking, but operator locations options are unprecedented with the larger Wood-Mizer mills. Just determine if you want to walk or ride and stay close to the cut, be able to move around wirelessly, or use an operator station that is movable or stationary.

Adding this material handling system eliminates bottlenecks and moves logs and lumber with minimal effort. A log infeed deck, an inclined conveyor, and a transfer table act as several extra sets of hands to help sawyers quickly and safely get to the finished product. With the durability and strength of industrial mill products, this system is built to absorb the shock, strain, and stress of heavy log and lumber handling. Log Infeed Deck

Available in two lengths (12 and 20), these two-strand hydraulic decks are controlled from the operator station. A hydraulic chain moves the logs along the deck. Transfer Table

This tables unique design eliminates chains, gears, and even an electric motor. It can be adjusted for right or left-hand use and simply requires standard shop air and 110 V AC.
Inclined Conveyor
part #: iC2-s $7,295 This inclined conveyor literally replaces an extra person working on the mill. The inclined conveyor works in tandem with the deluxe board return system on the LT70. As the board is pulled back off the cut, it moves to the conveyor and off of the mill, eliminating the need for an extra person to move each board. It is effective and cost efficient, removing slabs, flitches, and boards with ease, and allowing the operator to quickly begin the next cut.

The thin-kerf, portable bandsaw mill industry that is known today began with the passion and ingenuity of two men: Don Laskowski and Dan Tekulve. In 1980, they owned a company that built a line of woodworking products including small shop bandsaw. This simple saw accurately cut thin wafers from blocks of wood that were 8 tall with a small 1/8 blade and a 3/4HP motor. With a constant eye on innovation, the business partners considered the possibility of simply adding horsepower, widening the blade, and building a bed with a track allowing a cutting head to travel the length of a log to saw boards off the top of the log. At the time, college textbooks on logging and sawmilling said it would take a 3-6 wide blade and a hundred horsepower to accurately cut two foot wide hardwood boards, but Don and Dan believed that a smaller and more efficient design could work. They were right. The first prototype mill sawed accurate 24 wide boards that were so thin you could see the shadow of your hand when you held it up to the light. The passion and ingenuity that started Wood-Mizer is still present today. Each year, the company invests millions of dollars in research, development and product testing. We saw hundreds of thousands of board feet of lumber each year to ensure that every Wood-Mizer sawmill is engineered and designed to perform.
