Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of April 16, 2012

This week we will be really involved in our new unit, Water, Water Everywhere. Unit The central idea is that water is essential to life, and is a limited resource for many people. It includes inquiries into: Sources of water and how water is used What happens to water after we have used it Distribution and availability of usable water Responsibilities regarding water We will be visiting kowerk in late April to see the water museum and learn more about how water gets to us in Berlin. You will receive a permission slip today. We can only take one parent per class on the bus, but other interested parents can join us on site. Unit If you want a packed lunch from school on that day it is 2.75 for a sandwich, fruit, and water. This must be ordered by Wed., the 25th. Some key vocabulary we will use in the unit: salty, fresh, resource, source, filtration, conservation, glacier, lake, river, sea, ocean, stream, groundwater, run-off, sewage, essential, and limited. We will also review the water cycle words (condensation, evaporation, precipitation). It will help your child if you discuss these words in your home language. If you translate these words, we would love to have a copy for classroom use. Ask your child to estimate how much water is in different things and then check together. This week we will be looking at water sources, water uses, and begin a water log that must be completed daily at home. Please help your child set up a system for this. Look in your childs homework diary for the due date. We need to borrow buckets! Please could you send in a 10 liter bucket by Wednesday. You will get it back later in the week. If you have more than one even better! Because your child may get wet during this simulation please also send in a change of clothes.

Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of March 5, 2012

Next week is Book Week in the Elementary School and we will have lots of fun. Please let us know if you would like to come in and read. There will be new books for sale on Thursday and Friday. 3C is running a used book sale on Thursday (April 26th). Please look through your shelves and send in any books to donate (any language, any ages). All proceeds will go to charity. http://www.roomtoread.org/page.aspx?pid=209 In writing we are beginning to look at persuasive writing. Look for good examples at home to share. In the United States April is Poetry Month and there are many great resources available that we will also be exploring. Next Thursday (April 26th) is Poem in Your Pocket Day and we are requiring all students to bring a poem that they can carry in their pocket that day. Whenever someone comes up to them they will get a chance to recite their poem. The poem can be original or from a poet your child admires. This will also be a chance to try out some performance art. Erman Jones (playground assistant) is an actor who will demonstrate this skill this week in preparation. In reading we continue to look at synthesizing. We are encouraging students to share book recommendations with classmates and have set up regular book talk times. Ms. Victor is starting a lunch/recess book club on Thursdays. This is open to all third graders. We will read great books, share books we love, and make book trailers. It is voluntary, but students should decide whether they will remain committed to it, even when the beautiful weather calls. This week we go back to further develop multiplication and division. We will look at multiplying larger numbers. You can help at home by practicing basic facts with your child DAILY. Addition and subtraction fact recall also supports this, as the students need fact fluency to check their work accurately. We will be looking at some games we played earlier in the year and extend their learning.

Notes from Specialists

Dear Parents, During the course of the year, students in the Elementary School (Grades 1-5) are invited to share a short song or piece of music at our matinees. Our last matinee this year is on the Wednesday when we return after our Spring Break: Wednesday, April 18 (3:15-4:00 in the MPR) A matinee is basically a short concert where students that are taking lessons or are otherwise inspired to perform can play or sing for an audience. At BBIS, our Elementary School concerts and performances during the school year generally reflect what we are learning collectively in the classroom, so these matinees are designed to provide an opportunity for students to shine individually or as a small group. Please e-mail Brent Lund Bruning ([email protected]) by Monday, April 16 if your child would like to take part in the matinee on April 18th. Please indicate what instrument and what piece will be played and help your child prepare for the concert. In order to keep the concert a reasonable length, we ask that students choose fairly short pieces. If they want to sing, please figure out how to shorten the song to about two minutes. Even if your child is a beginner, this is a supportive and understanding audience, so please encourage him or her to take part. If you are interested in coming to the matinee as an audience member, just show up and enjoy the music! Let me know if you have any questions. Brent Lund Bruning In the artroom We are finishing our study of color by creating art inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was known for his work with bold, strong colors and shapes. Each class is making artwork based on a different color scheme: complimentary colors; harmonic colors; random colors. The art of each student will be combined into a quilt-style arrangement and displayed by class/color scheme in the hallways of the pavilion. http://www.rootedvisions.com/grade-3.html password: lehmbau In the next weeks, students will be bringing older artwork home with them so that we can have more storage space in the art room. Best, Nathan Shrom
