About Work Sims 2
This document describes the basic format for the work simulation used within the Creativity Scholarship programme. The format can be changed to fit a certain theme or sub-sector as required.
The WorkSim:
The work simulation element takes place outside the school or college. Industry training venues, university facilities or museums have been used. The WorkSim usually lasts a week and allows the student to work to an industry standard from a client brief. The brief will be a professionally designed remit delivered to the students by the client. Ideally the client is a company director, a senior manager or someone suitable in role. The students work in teams, usually in competition, they have a tutor acting as a consultant, a deadline, and work to health & safety standards with a disciplinary procedure. The employment code, health & safety and induction is covered on the first day. The consultant will be introduced and the client representative will explain about the company, the project, commercial application and present the brief to the teams and withdraw. Over the week the teams will work through the brief, presenting their proposals to the consultants and receive advice. The consultant will help the students concentrate on the design process, timescale, deadline and product realization. They may have experts to draw on, an animation technician for instance will help them produce an animation as part of the brief or multimedia technician help them design a web site. Half way through they will present their work for peer review and a crit from the consultant. This will help them to decide on the final product and begin to introduce ideas for their presentation to the client. At the end of the week the teams will exhibit and present work back to the client. They will get feed back from the client and a critical review from the consultant and be able to talk through the processes, from concept to product. Recording & assessment: Students and facilitators will record the process and build a picture or video library to use to create their group and individual e-portfolio. The students will use the selfassessment form to record their progress at the end of this phase of the Creativity Scholarship.
