APPROVED: Captain Jeffrey Hertel FOR RELEASE: February 18, 2012 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: Captain Jeffrey Hertel Phone: 456-3499 Fax: 456-4490 12-014318 BANK ROBBERY UPDATE On Saturday, February 18, 2012, at approximately 12:15 a.m., the second suspect was arrested in the Hall St. and Marshall Ave. area without incident. The suspect, a 40- year old Grand Rapids resident, admitted to detectives that he committed the bank robbery on Friday, February 17, 2012 and also the following bank robberies; Huntington Bank, 1158 Wealthy St., on January 17, 2012. Huntington Bank, 1158 Wealthy St., on February 4, 2012. My Personal Credit Union, 1327 Plainfield Ave., on February 13, 2012. Both suspects are being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility. The cases will be reviewed by the United States Attorneys Office for federal prosecution. On Friday, February 17, 2012, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Grand Rapids Police responded to the 5/3rd Bank, 1319 Michigan St. NE, on a reported robbery. Upon arrival, witnesses told police that a suspect entered the bank and approached a bank teller. The suspect implied he had a weapon and demanded money. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect fled the bank on foot westbound on Michigan St. Witnesses reported observing a vehicle leave the area quickly. The suspect was described as a black male, 30-40 years of age, 5-10 to 6 in height, 180 lbs. The suspect wore a black stocking hat, black baggy coat, blue jeans, and had a grey mask over a portion of his face. The vehicle observed leaving the area was described as an older Chevrolet Impala. A partial license plate was obtained by witnesses. The vehicle was occupied by several subjects. At approximately 6:50 p.m., the suspect vehicle was observed by an officer in the area of Hasting St. and Prospect Ave., NE. The two occupants of the vehicle fled as the officer tried to stop them.
