Information Design Project
OVERVIEW For this project, Im asking you to do something similar to what were doing in this weeks class activity, but by yourself and with a sharper focus on your own interests. I would like you to conduct an analysis of an information design artifact. This can be a system you use at work, an interactive web site, or an information appliance, among other things. In doing so, I would you like you to take the opportunity to delve into an aspect of information design that is of particular interest for you. For example, if youre intrigued by translation, analyze a translation tool. If youre interested in metadata, focus your analysis of a web site on how it uses metadata. If youre interested in search engines, create a visual that clearly explains the workings of a popular one. Social networking? How does the Chumby interact with social networks? This is an information design in two different ways. First, because youll be analyzing an information design implementation, but also second, because youll be creating a visual that will explain that implementation, and your interests in it, to your audience. Your audience is your classmates, who hope to learn something. Some suggested steps: 1. Develop your knowledge about the focus youve selected; in many cases, the selections Ive provided from Rosenfeld and Morville will be a great place to start. Let me know if you get stuck.
2. Select a site, device, technology, etc. and analyze it. Be thinking about chapter

12 from R & M and how you might display your analysis visually.
3. Design and create a visual that explains your analysis. You might think of it as
a poster (and, did I mention, you each are entitled to a free poster printing, and that theyd look great hanging on the wall of our lab? Just a thought. ) It need not be a poster, however, and indeed that might not be the best for an online course! Think creatively, and Im happy to talk about options.
