Polar/Ocean Meteorology

Final Presentation Luna Puspita

The Ocean is the dominant physical feature on Earth, covering approx. 70% of the Planets surface. Earths highest peaks, deepest valleys and flattest vast plains are all in the ocean. Throughout the ocean, there is one interconnected circulation system powered by wind, tides, the force of the Earths rotation (Coriolis Effect), the Sun, and water density differences. The shape of ocean basins and adjacent land masses influence the path of circulation. Ocean is a major influence on weather and climate, it

Arctic Ocean

Anticyclonic

Cyclonic

The anticyclonic regime is the result of a higher sea level atmospheric pressure over the Arctic The heat content of the Arctic Ocean is potentially responsible for the sea ice melt and the Arctic atmosphere warm-up. Increase in the temperature and salinity is responsible for more cyclonic rotation in the Arctic Ocean

Influence the climate in all regions Surface albedo feedback effect A feedback is defined by Webster's Dictionary as "the return to the input of part of the output." A positive feedback causes an amplification of any perturbation. A negative feedback causes the damping of any perturbation.

Surface albedo feedback effect Loop Warming Loop Cooling

Something causes warmer conditions Some snow and ice melt This lower the surface albedo Causes more solar radiations to be absorbed in the surface Causes warmer conditions Something causes cooler conditions Some snow and ice form on the surface This higher the surface albedo Causes less solar radiations to be absorbed in the surface Causes cooler conditions

WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN THE POLAR REGION ?

This can happen to you !

How could that happen ?

Polar Lows are fast-forming, intense mesoscale cyclones that are often not predicted accurately. Due to their high winds and formation in cold air, they can be associated with severe icing. vessel icing is associated with: Cold Air Advection and Cold Sea Temperatures.

Tropical region
Located near equator The monsoon = seasonal change in wind direction. The change in direction is due to the difference in the way water and land heat.

TROPICAL = HOT SO, WHAT CAN HAPPENED IN TROPICAL CLIMATE ?

Sometimes, going to tropical regions can be a baaaaaaaaaaad thing
