A Nook for Books...
Though Zions library is small it is worthwhile to check out. In our growing-closer-tohome world, the word library has evolved to include on-line information that leaves virtually everything at our fingertips. Often this is useful, but most of the time I simply love to hold a book in my hand, to feel the binding, perhaps the age of the book in my fingersnot just the nimble pressure on buttons and the scanning of the screen. Anne Lamott is a writer I have come to admire very much, as she writes about life as it is. Here is a quote which touched me (and incidentally a friend of mine used in a very familiar newsletter): For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life The image of curling up in a comfy chair with a good book is very inviting. Doing it with a friend is even more appealingBeth Wagner has a dream of creating a nook at Zion UCC in the corner of the big Sunday School/Meeting rooma couple chairs, an end table, a bookcase, a lampsimple things to collect and turn into that comfy nook that can draw us together in community to share our love for books and for being together.

Consider it like planting a seedJesus said: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which someone took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches. Mt. 13:31-32. Lets help Beth cultivate this seed! Blessings, peace and love, Pastor Kristin

Reality Check!
Last year, 2010, the Search Committee told Zion that if we seriously wanted to find a new minister, we needed to get serious about giving and meeting budget requirements. Zion responded by giving $6,400 above budget requirements and nearly $10,000 above actual expenses. Now prayers have been answered and we have a wonderful new minister and family living in the parsonage! That's the good news . . . which brings with it the expected additional expenses and opportunities to respond. At the present level of giving and expenses, it could mean a $12,000 shortfall. Have we counted our blessings recently? How much of what we have is due to blessings from God and belongs to God? It's time for a reality check! YTD Comparisons...

Who would like to take on a gentle project at Zion UCC? Although the grass has been mown (thank you!), the courtyard is in need of some tender loving care. Does this sound like something you would like to do? As our church moves into the end of the summer of 2011, we celebrate the newness of the approaching fall season and the continuance of receiving God's grace in our lives and faith journey together. Why not brainstorm with friends to see where God may be leading us in sprucing up this special space?

Cat & Mouse

There was a missionary going to the Philippines and his wife had a cat which she could not part with. There was a hole in the wall of the house that they moved into. A mouse lived there and the cat loved to chase it. Every day the cat would chase the mouse but he couldn't catch it, and the mouse would laugh at him. One day, the cat almost caught the mouse. On that day the cat waited outside of the mouse hole. The mouse was very scared because he could hear the cat outside of the hole meowing. The cat sat there continuing to meow (meow, meow,m eow). Eventually the meowing stopped and all the mouse could hear was ruff, ruff, ruff. The mouse, full of joy, ran out of his house knowing that he had been saved. As the mouse came out of his hole, the cat pounced on him and gobbled him up, and walked away smiling saying to himself, it pays to be bilingual.

The Gathering Event

The Festival of Sharing event is really a two-day affair, with one day required for set up at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, and the second day devoted to the event itself. The Festival could not be managed without volunteers who work as staff with many taking on coordination of a particular responsibility year after year. Thousands of persons from churches all over the state attend, bringing their collected cash and material goods for ministry projects.

Migrant Farmworkers Project

MFP began in 1984 when Legal Aid Managing Attorney Suzanne Gladney discovered that many of her rural western Missouri Immigration clients worked in the apple orchards along Highway 24 in Lafayette County. She soon realized their needs extended well beyond immigration applications for family members. Although they had housing, their health status was poor and their access to services very limited. Their children felt lost and often overlooked in school, and pictured no future beyond life in the fields and orchards. They existed, literally and figuratively, on the margins of the communities where they lived and labored.

Suzanne and the small staff she began to assemble shared a deep concern about these families, particularly the future of children growing up in such difficult and confining circumstances. The staff gathered an ecumenical group of local churches and organizations to support emergency food assistance; organized caravans of doctors, nurses, and dentists to go to the Lexington area; and arranged specialized healthcare in Kansas City. MFP also started to document the number of migrants in Missouri, and guided schools and health providers in Lafayette County and southeast Missouri -- the Bootheel -- to apply for government funding for migrant education and healthcare. The MFP begins services in August and extends through the end of October or later. They serve approximately 400-500 migrant workers and families working in the orchards of Lafayette and Saline counties. MFPs grant sources for 2011, in addition to others, include; United Church of Christ - Justice and Witness Ministries, & Neighbors in Need Collection. Provide ongoing support
Grieving continues long after the funeral is over and the cards and flowers have stopped. The length of the grieving process varies from person to person. But in general, grief lasts much longer than most people expect. Your bereaved friend or family member may need your support for months or even years. Continue your support over the long haul. Stay in touch with the grieving person, periodically checking in, dropping by, or sending letters or cards. Your support is more valuable than ever once the funeral is over, the other mourners are gone, and the initial shock of the loss has worn off. Dont make assumptions based on outward appearances. The bereaved person may look fine on the outside, while inside he or she is suffering. Avoid saying things like You are so strong or You look so well. This puts pressure on the person to keep up appearances and to hide his or her true feelings. The pain of bereavement may never fully heal. Be sensitive to the fact that life may never feel the same. You dont get over the death of a loved one. The bereaved person may learn to accept the loss. The pain may lessen in intensity over time. But the sadness may never completely go away. Offer extra support on special days. Certain times and days of the year will be particularly hard for your grieving friend or family member. Holidays, family milestones, birthdays, and anniversaries often reawaken grief. Be sensitive on these occasions. Let the bereaved person know that youre there for whatever he or she needs.

Thank Yous!
To the Zion UCC Church Family, Thanks so much for your card and concern. I appreciate the card you sent me when I was under the weather. It certainly brightened my day. God bless you. In Christ, Jesse Barnhart Thank you so much for the thoughtful card. I am doing better and still have more surgeries. It is so nice to know so many are praying for me. Thanks to Teresa Begemann, too. Thank you! Paula Ford Jan Lewis, Pastor Kristin's mom, sends her deepest appreciation for the get well cards that she has been sent. "I look at them all the time and they make me feel so good," she said. "Please tell the church how much this means to me." Thank you, Norma for coordinating and sending cards (and to all who send cards), and to those who add their prayers, love and signatures to this beautiful ministry! There are many angels within Zion UCC. Pastor Elizabeth Pulawski has accepted a call to a Congregational UCC church in Michigan. She extends thanks to all who held her in prayer during the search process.

Gods promises are like the stars; the darker the night the brighter they shine. David Nicholas
