Lesson Plan: Animals Prepare for Winter

Teacher: Kaitlin Basler Date: November 17nd , 2010


Activity: Animals Prepare for Winter/Hibernation Grade: Kindergarten

Activity Purpose:
 What animals do to get ready for winter, what animals hibernate and why; what the
environment looks like for animals to know its time.
Learning’s/Outcomes:
 Actively listen to book read to them
 Understand and define hibernation
 To know names of some hibernating animals
 To learn the environmental indicators signalling an animal’s need to hibernate
 Knowledge of things animals do to prepare for hibernation.

Prerequisite Student Learnings:


 Familiarity with animals

Direct Instruction: Structured overview
Interactive: Discussion, storybook, charts, visuals
Independent: Coloring pictures independently

Equipment:
 Story: Little Fern’s First Winter
 Chart and animal pictures and information
 Coloring sheet for students
 Crayons
 Extra books and coloring bear sheet
Advanced Preparation:
 Prepare questions to ask students
 Create animal picture cards
 Create habitat cards of where animals hibernate
 Create Animals that Hibernate coloring page

Assessment:
 Observations: Students ability to participate in group discussion.
 Students demonstrate an understanding of hibernation and animals.
