How to make a SIMS plumbob for

Halloween or cosplay

If you're into playing The Sims or Sims 2 on your computer, you may want to try on the Sim
Life for yourself this Halloween. A Sim is an excellent costume, particularly if you're not that
sure about dressing up. All you need to add to your regular clothing is the green plumbob
floating above your head (ability to speak Simlish - optional).

To create this project, I adapted the origami Fluted-Diamond Christmas ornament project
from the Origami Resource Center - link to diagram below.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions
Things You'll Need:
 2 sheets of green origami paper or other perfectly square piece of paper
 Sturdy plastic headband
 pipe cleaner in color that matches your hair (or close enough)

1. 1

Take one sheet of paper right side up (some origami paper has a different color on
each side) and fold diagonally from corner to corner, each way.

2. 2
Turn paper over and fold from left to right, then from top to bottom.

3. 3

Fold into a square with 2 folds on each side

Open your paper - wrong side up. Fold along one diagonal, so you have a large
triangle. Press in corners along the diagonal creases so all the original 4 corners meet
at the bottom. You should have a square/diamond with a crease down the center as
shown and 2 layers of folds on each side.

4. 4

Your fold should look like a kite

Take the first fold on the right and stand it up in the center. Squash it down and crease
-- inserting a pencil all the way to the top helps the tip fold down smoothly. You
should have a kite shaped diamond.

5. 5
Repeat until all layers are folded

Fold the right side over the left. Repeat Squash fold and and second fold on each
layer.

6. 6

Repeat on second sheet of paper

Repeat steps 1 through 5 on the second piece of paper -- you should have 2 fluted
cone shapes.

7. 7

Each layer forms a flap or pocket

When the sections are laid flat, each layer should have either a flap or a pocket.

8. 8

Fit flaps and pockets together.

Carefully work around your shape, sliding flaps and pockets on one cone into the
pockets and flaps on the other cone.

9. 9
Voila!

You should end with a dimensional diamond that will stay together without tape or
glue.

10. 10

Insert pipe cleaner

Fold the diamond flat with 4 layers on each side. About 3 inches up from the bottom
on the center seam, make a small hole (the tip of a small knife is fine for this) Insert
your pipe cleaner.

11. 11

Twist wires together below the plumbob so you have at least 2 inches - so the
plumbob will appear to float above your head. Wrap ends of the wire tightly around
the head band to secure and you're good to go.

Tips & Warnings

 Standard origami paper makes a finished piece about 6 inches long. To make a larger
piece (more accurate in scale with the Sims game) use bright green copy paper cut
into 8-1/2 inch squares. Sparkly or foil paper could give the illusion of light.
 Have a few extra pieces of paper to practice with
 Use wire sturdy enough to support the finished shape
 A headband with angles or little teeth is best to keep your plumbob from slipping off
center.
