Editorial
This is a landmark year for AFGJI as our school completes 25 years this year. It gives us immense pride to be
a part of this school which has made a huge difference in our lives and will become a part of it over the years.
Schooling is indeed one of the most beautiful periods of one’s life. It is a journey where we meet a lot of people
and they leave an indelible impact in our minds. “Learning” is a gradual process and on this journey we learn and
imbibe knowledge and values from our teachers everyday. We grow as a friend, as a student but most importantly
we bloom as HUMAN BEINGS. On this journey we prepare ourselves unknowingly yet constantly to face the
challenges that await to embrace us as soon as this journey of ours comes to an end.
Photography and writing are vital tools to preserve beautiful memories. As one ponders over one’s thoughts he
learns more about himself, and learns to appreciate and respect his thoughts and opinions. It is essential that every
individual pens down his thoughts for getting acquainted with oneself is of vital importance for moving ahead in
life and reaching the epitome of success and happiness. Success and happiness is a state of mind. A writer once
very aptly said “success is getting what you want and happiness is wanting what you get”.
A human mind inevitably forms opinions of things happening around, reminisces about old memories, both happy
and sad, and dreams and plans the future. Swarnima is a collection of thoughts and experiences of the AFGJIites
and also gives them a platform to improve their writing skills.
Sports has become a major part of our lives. This year 2010 undoubtedly is an important year for sports, with
IPL, Wimbledon, FIFA and CWG all in this year, it seemed essential to include a section on sports in this issue of
Swarnima. However it should be rememebered that 2010 is the year of biodiversity hence an effort has been made
to reinforce the importance of keeping the environment neat and clean.
Dear readers, we the editorial team have tried our best to put forth the thoughts of every child in as captivating a
manner as possible without hampering the original work of the writers. At this juncture we would like to thank our
Principal; Mrs Shipra Sarcar, Mrs Jyoti Bhutani; Headmistress Primary Wing and Mr Amresh Chandra; Headmaster
Special Wing for all their help and support. We thank our Admn Officer Gp Capt R. Kaul (Retd) for his contribution
in photography. A special thanks to Mrs Alka Singh for her guidance and Mr Parijat Punj, President Alumni
Association for his painstaking efforts in compiling the varied responses given by the alumni for the magazine. This
magazine would have been incomplete without his sincere cooperation inspite of his hectic schedule.
We would like to thank all the students and teachers who contributed in every possible way to help in bringing
out this issue of Swarnima.
So AFGJIites, we hope this issue of our school magazine compels and inspires you too to write down and share
your thoughts and feelings with your fellow school mates…make the most of your school life.…strive, endeavour….
never look back…never give up….and achieve what you want!
All the best, have a happy year.

Cheers to our school

MESSAGE

Education is helping young people to grow into leaders, independent and original thinkers. It also helps
young students to grow into dynamic individuals and contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Today, the challenges are many and multi-fold. And undoubtedly the faculty of AFGJI is doing its best in
helping the students to develop by offering choices, complexities and aiming to intensify their learning
experience. It’s a place of opportunity and diverse role models.

I would like to congratulate the principal, staff and students for working together in bringing out this issue
of their school magazine “SWARNIMA”. I hope they will continue their efforts and inculcate qualities and
values in students whereby they will be able to rise above their self and serve the society and nation.

Best wishes and God bless you!!

vii
MESSAGE
Dear Students,

Our School has reached a major milestone this year by completing 25 years since its inception. It is a proud
moment for all those associated with this prestigious institute, which has grown from strength to strength. The
school has made tremendous progress in all these years and we have graduated to Computer-Aided Learning
(CAL) among other achievements. This year’s Swarnima is special and its emphasis is on Biodiversity to engrain the
value of preserving the environment which is the basis of all forms of life.

When you walk down the marble steps into the school, do you notice the trees around you? They are labelled with
their scientific names. Have you ever wondered why? The trees that make up the biodiversity around the white
buildings and the grounds maintain the universe for us. Imagine the school and its grounds without its green cover,
its rocky terrain and the concrete floors.

The reason this issue of the magazine is devoted to biodiversity is to make you share with the living and non-living
objects around you. In the classroom, you have a relationship with your desk, your bag kept next to you, the
bulletin board or the blackboard. It is things like these, minute as they may be, which keep up our world for us.

It is because human beings are unaware of these little relationships with their world that they are so confidently
striding towards self-destruction. Nature is not a thing to be taken for granted, it is a living being. It breathes like
you and lives like you. It may seem awkward to think that the walls that you kick, the desk that you sit on are alive,
but what if they were? When you start observing how you use the things around you, that’s when you will realise
that a lot of what you do on a routine, daily basis is dependent on inanimate objects that you take for granted:
that tiffin box in which your mother packs the food, the water bottle which gets kicked around in the bus, your
pencil box; all form a part of the biodiversity around you, that makes you who you are.
So next time you step out of the bus and walk down the steps that lead to your classroom and waiting friends, do
look around, spend a few seconds reading up about the plants – you may never know what you are discovering
in yourself that way!
I congratulate the Editorial team for the tireless efforts they have put in to bring out this issue. May God grant you
all happiness and wishing you success in all that you do.

FIFA

One of the most historic FIFA World Cups in history took flight on the 11th of June 2010 as the erstwhile colonial
continent Africa, bruised by epochs of domination and exploitation, welcomed the whole world with open arms to
witness one of the grandest and most spectacular sporting events of the modern age. It was a tournament of many
firsts, many novelties, many records smashed and bulldozed and the kind of controversy that will provide fodder
to the paparazzi until only God knows when. Dormant giants of the ‘beautiful game’ Spain took home the FIFA
World Cup Trophy (the replica…) to Madrid for the first time in history and finally, the Spanish had something
more to cheer about than the exploits Barcelona and Real Madrid who had segregated the footballing community
of the region for so long.

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun,

Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
He’s been here for days now with nothing to do,
But sits by the road, waiting for you.
He can’t understand why you left him that day,
He thought you and he were stopping to play,
He’s sure you’ll come back, and that's why he stays,
How long will he suffer? How many more days?
His legs have grown weak, his throat's parched and dry,
He’s sick now of hunger and falls with a sigh.
He puts down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see,
How a waiting dog dies!

An Educational tour to South Campus

The school organized an educational tour to South Campus Genetic Department on 4th of September 2009 for the
students of class XII. The research department was a very well-maintained building. The labs were well equipped.
The research assistants working under Dr. BK Thalema; one of the best geneticists in our country, briefed the
students on DNA isolation, ingredients used and the procedure.

The students were allowed to handle some of the equipments themselves, The children were also shown get
electrophoresis used to separate fragments of DNA in UV chamber. The children were also shown karyotyping and
Polymerase chain reaction machines which till now they had only read in the books. This experience enabled the
students to understand the bookish theory properly and also increased their curiosity in the field of Biotechnology.
Overall it was a very interesting and enriching experience.

FRIDAY, 2nd March 2010

4:50 A.M.

As the Scorpio’s engine roared to life, I turned back for one last look at the Ramnagar Railway Station, the last
reminder of the insane city life I was leaving behind for these two days.

Soon, as we began driving up into the hills, Joydeep Sarkar (or Joy in short), my mother’s school friend and
the person who runs the camp we were going to, started educating us about the hills and the Tiger Reserve,
occasionally pointing out the odd barking deer or plum-headed parakeets.

Of course, traveling in a second class sleeper, I couldn’t get much sleep, even though my mother slept like a
log, so after a quick breakfast I dozed off for a couple of hours. Later on in the day I stepped out for some
bird watching. The second group staying there consisted completely of avid wild-life enthusiasts, so I sat
around staring at the birds through the binoculars, while they clicked away on their gigantic cameras and
gave me the odd bit of information about the birds we were observing. It was a wonderful experience, I got

Inter-School Environment Competition

The ECO Club of our school organised an Inter-school Environment Competition on the 16th and 17th of
September 2009. The theme of the competition was climate change. This competition was sponsored by the
Ministry Of Environment, WCT Delhi. Dr. B. C Sabata; Senior Scientist Officer, Department Of Environment
WCT, Delhi, had kindly consented to witness the competition as our chief guest. Ten schools had participated
with commendable competitive spirit. There were six events including English declamation, MS power point
presentation, quiz, on the spot creative activity, poster making and exhibition. Blue Bells Model School was
declared winner and bagged the trophy of the competition. Our primary aim of awareness about climate
change was achieved successfully with grandeur.

When I was young, my parents used to often notice me playing with a stick and hitting something imaginary in
the air. On my fourth birthday my father presented me a badminton racquet which he thought would be an ideal
replacement for my imaginary game. The enjoyment soon turned into a passion and I found myself deep into
practice. I never lacked company as my younger brother was quick to follow me.

I now realised that playing games besides being a source of enjoyment also helps to bring about a lot of positive
changes-both mentally and physically.

The ‘In’ Thing
By Himanshu X-D

I f there’s one definition that even the young kids

of today know, its got to be of the ‘in’ thing, but for
the ones who may be unaware, these are the things
that people (mostly young) do to have a favourable
status among the peers. Seriously, there is no age bar,
whatsoever, when it comes to following the latest ‘in’
stuff….From funky hairstyle to ultra loose clothing, from
following bizarre cults to using absurd words. Like it or
not its all in folks. Its all happening. So friends welcome
to the era of the ‘in’ thing.

It is, for some, the easiest way to cling to the “coolest”

and the most “happening” group of people. “In” thing
may definitely be a way of self-expression. Things
like having the latest gadgets and flaunting them, or
wearing expensive branded clothes, or having the
funkiest or the weirdest hairstyle may just be another
non-verbal way of saying- “Hey look at me, I’m cool!!!”.
Visiting the swankiest malls or cozziest cafés or the
snazziest pubs and pairing up or rather ‘hooking up’

'Dilli': The Abominable City of Hearts
By Sidhant Walia - XI C

Never did I think of writing a poem

On a city with a plethora of ancient marvelous tombs
Which look to me, more like redundant domes?
Of an unorganised city unlike that of the magnificent Rome
Everything here is miles beyond unclear
And so are you, my dubious dear.
But who gives a dime about planning here?
Cause all it brings is nothing but tears! (MCD Sealing)
The men go on living a trite life
Trying their best to keep up with their terrible wives.
And the women, they seek nothing but money
Cause that is all that is dear to them, honey
This one looks nice, no maybe the other one. How about this one...Grr...!
The wonderful city is blessed with fine fertile sand
Yet there ain’t enough space to grow a single plant
The city is oozing with nothing but mundane city bees
Who don’t care a bit about the lovely green trees
They happily toil themselves from morning till night
Just so that their house budget’s not tight.
MONEY IS MY HONEY!
After a hard day’s work
The workers, beyond tired they return….
Only to continue living life in a murk
Unwillingly spending all that they earn.
Then come the oldies, who just sit and stare
Ogling their feeble eyes out, as if they care
Criticising the government and its actions everyday
Blaming theirs to be a nasty play.
And how can we forget the chirpy kids
Who are interested in nothing but the latest vids
Laughing their lives off in a ugly and dangerous way
By faking to be happy and gay.
The city ain’t that good itself
Its condition being beyond helpless
Dirty streets to broken roads
Every damn thing is against the codes.

49
Every damn thing is out of place.
So what?
I n spite of all its negative points
It is DILLI and that is what counts
The people who are selfish and cruel
Surprisingly can descent to the level of a mule
Ignoring all that is bad or even sad
And suddenly become the hospitality dad.
T hey have a heart which not that small
It is big indeed, big enough for everyone to stroll
The affable citizens like social interacting
And spend half their lives talking, texting and chatting.
They are not misers when they have to spend
Even though they make sure that they extend
The bill to you before they pay
So that they have something to brag about on a future day.
They will forcefully make you eat
Everything damn thing from veggies to meat
And will convince you to eat further
Just like your very own mother.
A nd then there are the dodging lovers
Who are nowhere to be found except under the covers
They are easy going and goofy but yet are sly
Smart enough to make each other cry.

YAY!
However, the issues that pertain
To the lovely city will forever retain
And this no one ever tries to rectify
Then how can thou manage enough courage to cry
Oh! What a pathetic city to live in
it always makes me aimlessly spin

The city is everything you’d ever want, a big retreat

The mesmerising chilly winds to the alluring summer heat
Everything is just too good in here
And you too are welcome to DILLI, my enchanted peer.

So what if it’s crowded, it still is a lure

So what if it’s dirty, it still is pure
So what if it’s unorganised, it still is divine
So what if it’s polluted, it still is MINE.

T he physical deformities of special children (especially gross motor disabilities like cases of Cerebral
Palsy and associated conditions of Hemiplegia, Quadriplegia etc) are quite different from the physical
deformities of other cases since they are non-progressive with very slow improvement over a long period
of time. Moreover the improvement has to be achieved with available minimal co-operation of the special
child which is best done in the form of modified active and active assisted exercises. Here we present a case
of CP where we could achieve marked gross motor improvement over an appreciable period of time.

Simran: Simran, a 9 year old girl, is a case of Cerebral Palsy (severe). She is totally dependent for locomotion
and non-ambulatory. She did not have balance in sitting and was unable to stand even with support. Now
after two years of intensive physiotherapy, she is able to stand and walk with support and aiming for the
level of improvement as standing and walking with the help of a walker. We hope for her bright future.

Why I want to be
a CRICKETER
By P. Akaash IV–C

C reative are those minds,

Running for riches like the blinds,
Idyllic or Idiocy, they do inspire,
Colossus or ads are made for those who perspire,
Knocking wickets are a great fun,
Entertaining it is, while they run,
Twenty- Twenty is truly the ‘best of fun’.

Everything
My Mom Does
By Jahnvi Singh V-B

HOW DID YOU FIND ENERGY, MOM

TO DO ALL THE THINGS YOU DID?

TO BE A TEACHER, A DOCTOR AND A

COUNSELLOR!

TO BE WITH ME WHEN I WAS A KID.

HOW DID YOU DO IT ALL MOM?

BE A CHAUFFEUR, COOK AND A FRIEND

YET FIND TIME TO BE A PLAYMATE.

I JUST CAN NOT COMPREHEND.

YOU ARE NOT JEALOUS MOM!

BUT YOU KEEP US HAPPY ALONG.

YOU GIVE US TOYS, TEDDY, BOOKS AND DRINKS

BUT DO YOU KNOW MOM,

HOW MUCH HAPPINESS IT BRINGS?

OH! MOM I AM EXTREMELY SORRY FOR MY BAD

HABITS

BUT WHEN YOU FORGIVE ME, YOU SAY, YOU

ARE MY RABBIT!

YOU DO LOTS OF CHORES BUT AFTER THAT,

YOU GIVE US THINGS MUCH MORE.
