    Buerger's disease, also known as thromboangiitis obliterans, is a non-atherosclerotic, inflammatory disease that causes the blood vessels of the arms and legs to narrow and become blocked. The exact cause is unknown, but smoking is a major risk factor and may trigger an autoimmune or hypersensitivity reaction. The disease results in inflammation of small and medium arteries and veins in the extremities, which leads to thickening of the vessel walls. Over time, this causes the vessels to become completely blocked by blood clots and scar tissue, reducing blood flow and causing pain, skin ulcers, gangrene, and other issues due to ischemia.
