History of Hinduism

Hinduism developed sometime between 750-550 BC

Hinduism is made up of many religious beliefs


•Can not be traced back to one founder or leader
•Does not have a single set of beliefs

Religious leaders originally tried to


interpret the Vedas
•Developed a written translation called
the Upanishads
Hindu Beliefs

Hindu believers strive to reach


moksha- a state of perfect understanding

The Three Paths:


•Path or right thinking
•Path of right action
•Path of religious devotion

Karma: a person deeds, good or bad,


follow them from one life to another

Reincarnation:
belief that the
soul is born and
then reborn until
moksha reached
Hindu Society
Caste System:

Brahmin-
priests
Warriors and
rulers
Skilled workers,
traders, and merchants

Unskilled workers

Outcasts and untouchables

In Hinduism your social class was


determined by your karma
Hindu Deities
Brahma-the creator Shiva: the destroyer

Vishnu: the protector-


Could take different forms
Krishna- the cow herder
Rama- the perfect king
