Tobacco
• Tobacco is
Tobacco an agricultural product processed
from the leaves of plants in the
genus Nicotina It can be consumed, used as
an organic pesticide and,in the form of
nicotine tartrate,used in some medicines.It is
most commonly used as a recreational drug
and is a valuable cash crop for countries such
as Cuba,China and the Unites States.

• There are more than 70 species of tobacco in


the plant genus Nicotiana.

Types of Tobacco
Modes of Consumption
Cigarette Smoking:
Consumed through smoking/Inhaling. Manufactured out of finely cut cured tobacco
and addictives. Most common method of tobacco consumption globally .
• Chewing Tobacco (Gutka, Paan etc):
Consumed by placing a portion of the tobacco between the cheek and
the gum or teeth and chewing (India one of the highest )
• Hookah:
Single or multi-stemmed, often glass based, operates by water
filtration and indirect heat
• Cigars
Tightly rolled and fermented tobacco, not inhaled due to high alkalinity
(USA one of the top consumers)
• Bidi
Thin, often flavoured, wrapped in a tendu leaf. Is low cost and popular in
South East Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, SriLanka
