This document provides information about water jet cutting. It describes how water jet cutting works using a high pressure water stream combined with garnet abrasive to cut through materials up to 12 inches thick, including metals, plastics, and composites. The advantages of water jet cutting are mentioned as having no heat affected zones, producing burr-free cuts, and enabling near net shape cutting without secondary operations. Various material types that can be cut with water jet cutting are also listed.

PROJECT
ON WATER JET CUTTING
PREPARED BY : PARTH A. JOSHI
ROLL NO. : 07BMER018 LEARN ALL ABOUT… WATERJET CUTTING What it is, how it works, and why • Waterjet cutting is… – A method of manufacturing that uses a high pressure water stream to cut through material • Pressure of the water gets up to (and sometimes more than) 60,000 PSI • Water exits the nozzle in the cutting head with a cutting diameter of 0.020” to 0.060” What is waterjet cutting? (cont.) • Waterjet cutting… – Uses garnet abrasive combined with the cutting stream to cut through the material – Processes up to 12” thick material • This includes: – Rubber – Stainless Steel – Carbon Steel – Plastic – Copper – Brass – Armor Plating – Aluminum Advantages of Waterjet Cutting • There are no heat affected zones (HAZ) – The material does not get warped, discolored or hardened • Ability to manufacture burr-free parts – No jagged edges or burrs • Near net shape cutting – Eliminates the need for secondary operations • Can cut through thick materials – Up to 12” in thickness Waterjet cutting is one of the most versatile cutting processes around. Well suited for high-performance metal cutting, waterjet technology, when used with an abrasive additive, creates a clean, burr-free cut that does not require secondary finishing and does not leave a heat-affected zone. Nearly every type of cut is possible, from rapid hole drilling to detailed cuts for automotive application. Waterjet cutting systems are also less expensive than laser-cutting systems, making them a solid choice for metal and steel cutting in the fabrication industry. The addition of abrasive widens the range of cuts that waterjet technology can perform, but abrasive is often one of the most expensive components of a waterjet cuttings. To offset the costs of using abrasives in water jets to cut harder materials, Waterjet cutting has developed a system that regulates the amount of abrasive used, controls the flow, and eliminates waste.
Better abrasive management makes
cutting with water a truly efficient process. Material Options • Stainless • Rubber • Ceramic Tile Steels • Composites • Urethane • Glass • Neoprene • Carbon Steels • Titanium • Silicone • Red Metals • Copper • Mesh • Aluminum • Brass • Delrin • Steel Alloys • Inconel • Felt • Acetal • Honeycomb • Exotic Metals • Nylon • Linoleum • Ballistics • Armor Plating • Plastics Non-Abrasive Waterjet Cutting • This process uses no abrasive in the cutting stream, just high pressure water • Used to cut soft, thin, or porous material – Silicone – VCT (tile) – Foam – Felt – Cork – Teflon – Neoprene – Composites – Plastic Why use waterjet cutting? • When companies outsource work to manufacture their custom products proficiently, waterjet cutting is often an advantageous option • Waterjet cutting allows for fast turnaround times – It’s also a very efficient cutting method • No burr • No heat affected zones • Multiple head cutting allows nesting of parts which is like ‘multi-tasking’ for the waterjet, as it is able to cut numerous parts at once Schematic illustration of the abrasive-jet machining process. WATERJET VS. EDM Wire EDM Strengths Waterjet Strengths Extremely precise parts are Five to ten times faster in possible (±0.0001“) parts less than 1" thick (but, at ±0.003"), less precise as Very thick parts (over 12“) well can be made Intentional taper can be put No Heat Affected Zone into a part for die clearance (HAZ) & other uses Works well in non- conductive materials (such as glass, stone, plastic) as well as conductive materials
Can pierce material directly
without the need for a pre- drilled starter hole
Can produce large parts at
