Harmonic functions
„ Functions satisfying Laplace’s equation
in a domain are said to be harmonic in
that domain.

„ If is analytic in a
domain then and are
harmonic in that domain.
Dirichlet’s problem
„ Determination of a
function which satisfies
Laplace’s equation (ie is
harmonic) in a domain
and takes prescribed
values on its boundary.

„ Note: the Domain D can be upper half

plane with the x axis as the boundary C.
The Dirichlet problem for a circle-1

- f(w) analytic on and inside the circle.

- “z” arbitrary point inside the circle.

The Dirichlet problem for a circle-3
Subtracting (2) from (1) :
The Dirichlet problem for a circle-4

The Poisson integral formula gives the value of the harmonic

function U(r,θ) everywhere inside a circle of radius R, provided we
know the values U(R, φ) on the circumference of the circle.
Example
Find a function harmonic inside the unit circle |z|=1 and
taking the prescribed values given by 1 0< θ < π
F(θ)=
0 π< θ < 2π
Using Poisson's formula:

The Dirichlet problem for a Half Plane-3

The Poisson integral formula gives the value of the harmonic

function φ(x,y) everywhere in the Upper Half Plane , provided we
know the values φ (u, 0) over the entire real axis.
Example
Solve the following
boundary value problem:

Using Poisson's formula:

Summary
„ Poisson integral formula- analytic
continuation: The function on the boundary is
specified and we are seeking for the function
in the domain_ Any Physical problem
(Boundary Value Problems)
„ These problems can be solved by conformal
mapping technique.
„ If normal derivative of the function takes
prescribed values on the boundary it’s called
