DESCRIPTION
Citicoline (CDP-Choline) is a naturally occurring, water-soluble biological
compound that is an essential intermediate for the synthesis of
phosphatidylcholine, a major constituent of the gray matter of brain tissue.
Citicoline promotes brain metabolism by enhancing the synthesis of
acetylcholine and restoring phospholipid content in the brain.

HIGHLIGHTS

§ Well defined multiple mode of action

§ Suitable pharmacokinetic properties and high safety

§ Highly compatible with first line drugs like rtPA

§ Good quality evidence base

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
§ Citicholine activates the biosynthesis of structural
phospholipids in the neuronal cell membrane, increases
cerebral metabolism, and increases the levels of various
neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine and dopamine.

§ Citicholine has shown neuroprotective effects in situations of

hypoxia and ischaemia, as well as improved learning and
memory performance in brain aging.

§ Citicholine, through the action, improves the function of the

membrane mechanisms, such as the functioning of the ionic
exchange pumps and receptors inserted in it, the modulation
of which is indispensable for a correct neurotransmission.

§ Citicholine has cerebral antiedematous properties due to its

stabilizing action on the neuronal cell membrane.

§ Clinical trials have demonstrated that Citicholine improves the

symptoms associated with states of cerebral dysfunction
subsequent to various processes, such as the
carnioencephalic traumatism and acute cerebral vascular
accident. Citicholine improves the level of amnesia and the
cognitive, sensitive and motor disorders associated with these
pathologies. subsequent to various processes, such

INDICATIONS
Injections:
For the treatment of disturbance of consciousness resulting
from head injuries, brain operation and acute stage of cerebral
infarction.
Tablets:
For the treatment of patients with serious cerebral injuries of
vascular traumatic nature with or without loss of consciousness
and for treatment of degenerative damages and chronic cerebral
vascular injuries in senile dementia.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Must not be administered to patients with hypertonia of the
parasympathetic.

PRECAUTIONS

Must not be administered in conjunction, with medications

containing centrophenoxine.
In case of persistent intracranial hemorrhage, it is
recommended not to exceed the dose of 1000 mg of Somazina
daily, in very slow intravenous administration (30
drops/minute).

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Occasionally Somazina may exert a stimulating action of the

parasympathetic, as well as discreet and fleeting hypotensive
effect.
