GENERAL INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE

Th i s manua lis intended to se t gu i de 1 i nes t S tanda rds and techn i ques for the erection and installation of the ULTRAFLOTE Cover and all related operations. It is intended to insure proper functioning and long life inherent in the ULTRAFLOTE Cover design and therefore insure customer satisfaction. The ULTRAFLOTE organization is based on quality and efficiency and our efforts culiminate in the field operation.

This manual should never superceed safety or comr.~n sense. A project should never be done "by the book!' if there is a better way without sacrificing quality or jf it involves a conflict with good safety practices.

This manual assumes a familiarity with standard storage tank practices and techniques by the user and does not elaborate on common erection and repair methods. The user should refer to the governing rules or specifications for more information on this subject.

This manual prescribes accessories and operations which may not be included

in the scope of work for an individual tank. Refer to the contract and/or the office to determine responsibility and obligation.

This manual is based on the extensive accumulative knowledge and experience

of ULTRAFLOTE CORPORATION and every effort has been made to assure the accuracy and reliability of the data and techniques contained herein. ULTRAFLOTE CORPORATION makes no representation. warranty, or guarantee in connection with the publication of this manual and hereby expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility for any cost or damage resulting f~om its use or for any violation of any federal, state, municipal, or local regulation with which the manual

ULTRAFLOTE COVER DESCRIPTION

Drawings 20198,20199, 20199A and 20200 (pages 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 & 2.4) show general information about an ULTRAFLOTE Cover installed in a storage tank. It

is an all aluminum design consisting of tubular pontoons supporting cross beams which clamp together continuous length skins along their edges. Thus, the entire liquid surface is covered with aluminum which is supported about 711 above the liquid surface by the flotation of the pontoons. Around the edge of the cover, spaced about 711 from the she l I is a rim plate which seals the vapor space under the cover by protruding into the 1 iquid 4 to 51'. A similar liquid seal is formed around every penetration through the cover '(such as a column or ladder). A flexible seal is installed around the rim edge to help prevent vapor loss from the small liquid area outside the rim plate. Arrangements are made on all penetrations to seal their small areas and still provide clearance for relative movement due to non-parallel components. All movable components are electrically grounded to the cover with flexible stainless steel cables. The cover itself is then electrically grounded to the tank itself with stainless cables. The erection of the cover consists primarily of alignment and bolting with very little cutting or trimming and no field aluminum welding. A small amount of light steel welding is required to modify the tank for the cover. None of this welding connects a pressure part and is not highly stressed in ~

The ULTRAFLOTE Cover is a high quality cover intended to give long service life. It has been designed to erect rapidly and still be adaptable to the varied conditions encountered in the field.

As an aid to rapid erection, each cover is computer designed and ordered to insure best fit possible and no shortage of materials. The information on the printout sheets and on the erection drawing should be used and adhered to as much as possible for maximum economy. A spare copy of the layout drawing and ~~terial bills will always be found inside the 3/8 square nut container as a back up.

Pages 2.6 through 2.17 are examples of the data received in the field. Page

2.5 is identical to page 2.6 except additional notes have been added to Page 2.5 to explain and clarify some of the abbreviations used on the drawing. Page 2.5 is not the way the drawing will come to the field. Pages 2.6 and 2.11 are examples of drawings of 100' tanks with English units of measurement; Pages

2.7 and 2.12 are examples of drawings of the same tanks with metric units as would be sent to those countries using the metric system. Note that the pontoon lengths are always shown in feet and inches because those units will be marked on the pontoons and will serve as an identification mark.

Pages 2.6 thru 2.10 show a 1001 diameter fixed leg tank with very few addi tiona1 accessories. Pages 2.11 to 2.17 show a 100' diameter adjustable leg tank with nearly every available option. This will demonstrate the range of options and accessories that are available and can appear on the drawing and material

1 is t.

Pages 2.18 through 2.54 are an "Unloading Manual" which shows a graphic picture of every piece in the cover and should be used for identification of the parts during unloading and erection. Please note the unloading instructions found on pages 2.18 and 2.19 concerning storage and checking off unloaded materials.

ULTRAFLOTE COVER

Unloading Manual

This manual is intended as a guideline for those personnel unloading an ULTRAFLOTE Cover from a truck, container, or crate.

The drawings included with this manual (Pages 2.20 thru 2.54) are a graphic picture of all the major components which may be included with an order. Please note that every part has a number (20XXX) and some also have a mark (A,B,C,D; etc.). The number and mark fully identifies the item. The material bill also names the item using exactly the same names as shown

on these drawings. For example: "20023A Tube Saddle Halve" would be on the material bill for that part. Not all of the components shown would necessarily be on an individual order. The material bill must be used to determine specific quantities.

Smaller parts are often shipped in cardboard boxes and fasteners are shipped in plastic buckets. These containers are not normally opened at the time of unloading. Occasionally. the customer will designate a storage area some

d l stance from the tank for security or material safety reasons. Always check with the customer to see if he has a storage location designated. If he has, note the location and name of the customer representative on your paperwork. If no location is designated. then try to unload the material as near to

the tank access manway as possible.

The material should not be stored in wet or swampy areas nor in areas likely

to flood if it rains. Pontoons and deck skins should not rest directly on

the ground because corrosive chemicals are often dumped or spilled around storage tanks. Cardboard boxes should not rest on the ground as they will absorb moisture and fall apart when picked up. Clamp beams should not lay on the ground as grit and dirt will prevent them from seal tng properly when bolted together. Even the black US r material should not lay directly on grass as

the grass will grow right through the seal actually puncturing through the thickness of the seal.

The materials should be handled with reasonable care to avoid damage during unloading. The coiled deck skins should never be dropped from the truck, even onto padding. The edges of the sheets must be kept straight to avoid problems during installation. Coiled skins have been flattened or squashed egg-shaped by dropping too far which can make unrolling very difficult. The pontoons are easily dented or even punctured if not handled carefully. Even clamp beams can be bent or bowed if abusively handled.

The materials should be checked off the material bill as they are unloaded

to avoid errors. Deck skins, pontoons, rim plates. ana-allilboxes and buckets

o N

2.19

are clearly marked with the file and index number for that tank. Other parts mayor may not be bund 1 ed and rna rked for each tank depend i ng on. the size and number of tanks on the load. If they are not prebundled, the number of pieces of each part must be counted carefully. Since boxes and buckets are not normally opened during unloading, the contents of each is listed on the outside of the box or bucket. Check these i terns off the mater i alb ill by showi ng a 118" instead of a check mark beside that item and show the total number of boxes and the total number of buckets on your paperwork.

Any shortages or discrepancies should be noted on the material bi I J and called into the office ASAP. This is important as substitutions may be possible or the trip routing may be changed, so call in before leaving the jobsite area if at all possible.

Any other special, unusual, or noteworthy things should also be noted on your paperwork. They might include:

Material Location

Customer contact who designates storage location Unusual site conditions (muddy, flooded, no road, etc.) Number of boxes

Number of buckets

Shortages or discrepancies

Date and time completed

Crew helped unload

Customer provided assistance local help hired

Customer contact very helpful Customer contact uncooperative Unusual weather conditions Etc., etc., etc.
