Our founders, Mr. Bangxin Zhang, offered our first afterschool mathematics tutoring class in August 2003 when
they were still attending graduate schools at Peking

How can a companys ability to innovate be improved?


All innovation activity can be traced back to the behavior of employees. That makes the employee the crucial
point of a companys growth and fall when it comes to delivering new services and addressing societys problems. Employees can either nourish innovation or could even hinder it.

But what does being innovative mean?

Being innovative is finding or doing something of value to society that ultimately solves a present or unknown problem and changes the way one might have previously perceived the problem.To be innovative
means to bring change.

Here are some tips on how we can be innovative as we work here in Le Waijiao:

1 Be accepting and welcoming to changes from clients,


markets and company. Do not complain.

Change is inevitable. Change entails becoming different in a particular way of life. Human as we are, we want to stay in our comfort
zones as much as possible. Wed like to stick to what were already
used to. But if you want growth, you need to accept and welcome
changes. Do not complain. Instead, view these changes as opportunities for you to maximize your potentials.

2 Make effective adjustments based on the changes,

and give others positive influence.

Frequent and random changes will make you flexible in conforming to new challenging circumstances that may affect your life.
Learn to adjust with the changes and acquire significant insights
that will lead you to the target objectives. Doing so will ultimately
influence others to also do their best in every undertaking step.

Be proactive in the pursuit of new ideas and skills that could


be beneficial in your field. Have your own research and collect resource materials that you could refer from time to time.
Study and practice the working methods you have establish
ed.

4 Take individual characteristics into

consideration and apply advanced practice you


learned to your job field. Enable your work sustains
a leading performance in the industry.

There are a lot of personalities that you may encounter as you


work here in Le Waijiao. Some may be friendly, some may
be strict. Some may be talkative while others may be the silent-type. But ultimately, you just have one common goal and
that is to deliver the best teaching service that you could offer.
Be flexible and apply all the things youve learned in your field.
You can also share it with your colleagues so that you can excel
together and improve your centers student retention rate. Success tastes sweeter when you have somebody to share it with.

Be forward-thinking, create new methods and


thoughts, and bring breakthroughs in performance.

An innovative employee has extraordinary skills to provide or


distribute his knowledge to others. So as a Le Waijiao teacher,
you also have to initiate new methods and ideas on how to
perform well, not only in teaching, but in other aspects of your
work as well. Think of ways on how you can improve yourself as a teacher. Generate new techniques on how to make

Changes brought about by teachers can also be a reason of the growth of many.
It is not an exaggeration to say that a great teacher can change a students life. There are endless
amount of stories that attest to the benefits of a strong relationship between an educator and
a pupil.
As some of the most influential role models for developing students, teachers are responsible for
more than just academic enrichment. If you want to be a great educator, you must connect with
your pupils and reach them on multiple levels, because the best teachers are committed to their
students well-being both inside and outside of the classroom. By forging strong relationships,
educators are able to affect virtually every aspect of their students lives, teaching them the
important life lessons that will help them succeed beyond term papers and standardized tests.

It is not always easy to change a students life, which is why it takes a great teacher to do
so. Some just need an extra push like the student. Others may be going through something
troubling in their personal lives and need someone to talk to. Whatever the student needs to
help them excel, a life-changing teacher will be there for them.

Have you ever had a teacher who inspired
you to work harder or pursue a particular
goal?
Were you inspired to become an educator by
one of your own great teachers?
Inspiring students is integral to ensuring their
success and encouraging them to fulfill their
potential. Students who are inspired by their
teachers can accomplish amazing things, and
that motivation almost always stays with
them. Inspiration can also take many forms,
from helping a pupil through the academic
year and their short-term goals, to guiding
them towards their future career. Years after
graduation, many working professionals will
still cite a particular teacher as the one who
fostered their love of what they currently do
and attribute their accomplishments to that
educator.

Guidance

Teachers can also be a trusted source of


advice for students weighing important
life decisions. Educators can help their
pupils pursue higher education, explore
career opportunities and compete in events
they might otherwise have not thought
themselves able to. Students often look to
their teachers as mentors with experience
and knowledge, and, as an educator, you will
almost definitely be asked for advice at some
point during your career.

loves status, even in career and business matters. All things seem to alter
be it for better or for worse.
In life, we expect changes to happen
from the strand of our hair to the
tip of our toe nails. Everything will
change gradually by its perfect time.
In love status, there would be ups and
downs. Its not all about laughter but
also tears. Today you laugh at times;
tomorrow you weep in tons. In career,
big changes and big opportunities
come, and then gigantic risks will follow ahead. In business matters, theres
refashioning and remodeling of new
products to make it more palatable as
a selling cupcake in the stock- market.

Changes happen in every tick of the


clock. We can neither hide nor run
from it. It will happen every second and
we expect it to be done.
Can you imagine living in a world with
no changes at all? Isnt it so drudging?
Change happens for a reason either
positive or negative, still, it has impact to ones endeavor. It hones you to
whom you must be in the near future.
And believe me or not, those changes
are the product of one thing- YOUR
PERSONAL CHOICE. If it is destined
for your future, it is because you are the
one deciding to who you become and
who you might be tomorrow. In short,
decision- making plays a vital role in
this phase.
It is clearly stated in a verse that: What

you sow is what you reap. Your future


depends on many things but MOSTLY
in you!

Thus, if you want to be in the


summit of success, work for it ENDURE to ENJOY. When you
want to suffer, then go ahead make
more harm.
We were given options. It is up for us
how to choose and utilize our choice.
We were given an armor of free- will,
the button is in our bare hands.
To conclude, be a catalyst of change. Be
vigilant for the changes. Be willing to
be changed and be innovative to make
something out of nothing. You have a
CHANCE to make a CHOICE so that
there is CHANGE (Dr. Seuss).

Before you are


leader, success is all
about growing yourself.
When you become a
leader, success is all
about growing others.

Thats what I realized when I


became a Teaching Supervisor. I
have to think about other people
now and not just myself. In this
case, I have to guide and lead
the teachers and not just think of
myself.

ere, I have to manage the day to day operations.I have to


make sure to monitor the teachers performance and adhere
to the company standards while doing so. There were a lot of
adjustments I had to make. I experienced a lot of problems left
and right.
Sure, problems are part of work. Its a given. But I was able to
handle them by keeping a positive mindset. When you have

a positive attitude, it gives you power over your circumstances, instead of your circumstances having power
over you. Its a very good thing that I have 3 efficient Team

Leaders to help. Thank you TL Ron, TL Jay, and TL Thea. It has


been 5 months. A lot has happened since then. I know that
there will be more challenges to face in the future. But we are
ready.

kind of leader that I am, I can say that it also brought about
the changes in the teachers attitude and the vibe in the office
and Im really thankful for that. I started last January 18 of this
year. I can say that a lot has happened since then. From 10th
place, we ranked 6th this Spring semester and that evidently
boosted the teachers morale. They have become hopeful and
resilient. They have an emotional oxygen. The TAL teachers are
evidently more open in expressing themselves now as what
other teachers in our office have noticed as well. Our center
has also been actively participating in the company activities.
Our excited teachers who joined Lewaijiaos Got Talent were
able to go on an all expense-paid trip to Bacolod. They werent
able to bag the 1st place, but they were elated when they got
back. They met other teachers from other centers. Now they
have new-found friends. These changes wouldve been difficult
to achieve without my General Manager at the helm. Im really
grateful for the support that Sir James Crawford has been giving us since day 1.

Q2. What is your work philosophy as a Teaching Supervisor?


My work philosophy has always been Have a positive attitude
amidst adversities. When I started working way back, I realized
that real positive thinking is unveiled when you can maintain it at
difficult times. Its the time when you need it the most. When you
have a positive attitude, you expect the best from the worst situations and you strive to do your best to find a way out.
Q3. How do you motivate your teachers to do their best specially
during summer classes.
For me, one of the best ways to motivate them is to challenge
them. I make them feel that I believe in their abilities to provide
an effective class, and I really do. The next is respect them. I listen
to their concerns and observations because I know that they are
professionals.They have a lot of sensible things to say as well. And
lastly, I nurture their greatness. They appreciate recognition. It
makes them feel good about themselves. We should give praise
where praise is due. Remember, Our principles affect our actions.
Q4. What is your message for all the teachers in your center?
I like this quote from a Greek philosopher: We cannot choose
our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we
respond to them.
It means that whatever it is that we may encounter in life, whatever problems we may face, its the way we react to it thats important. Im aware that each and everyone have encountered problems
with their computers, problems with their teachers pages, and
have their problem students as well. Sometimes, the first reaction
would be to complain and whine about it. But a better reaction
would be to adapt. A better reaction is to have a positive approach.
As educators, we should have a nurturing demeanor when it comes
to teaching. As educators, we should continue to engage, motivate,
and inspire students to learn. As educators, let us continue to believe that we can make a difference in the lives of our students.

I have noticed the way teachers handle their classes


during summer season, when
its very busy. I would like to
share these tips:

1. Rework the worst to


be the best
Based on student feedback, rework
your least engaging lessons to make
them the MOST exciting lessons this
summer semester. Prepare ahead of
time so you will look more confident
when teaching. Try to be creative as
well.

2.Revitalize Your Physical Health

Your health impacts your mood and


your ability to perform at peak levels.
During summer, its best to drink lots of
water for hydration. But just take a few
sips if you are having a class. Take your
Vitamin C everyday. Dont stay up too
late at night to avoid being lethargic
the following day.

3.Embrace Change

Some teachers are afraid of change.


Embrace change! You can change your
hairstyle to have a new look for your
students. You can buy new clothes or
you can mix and match, so you can
look cool even when you are sitting for
a few hours and not shopping. You can
change your background posters to
welcome the summer season. Its okay
to change as long as its for the better.

4.Laugh (a lot)

Laugh! Laugh with your students.


Appreciate them. Have fun with them
in class. When you are happy, you look
younger than your actual age. When
you are happy, you boost your immune
system and allow your bodies to use
energy for healing. Laugh your way
back to health.

Dealing with Difficult Students

ummer Semester is now approaching, new students are coming too... Teachers will be very busy again adding
new students and doing some placements tests.
Going back to Summer Semester last year wherein it was the first time that I met my students and the first time
I conducted the class with them. I was trying to build rapport which is very important especially that it was the
first time that we met each other. I thought building rapports and other technical issues are the only problems
that we are going to encounter during classes, but it was not.

reasons. They might just be one of those kids
that keep a running commentary on life.

The important thing is to be consistent with this, no matter what


methods you choose. Lay out the
rules clearly on your first day, and
follow through with everything you
say you will. If you say that a student
who talks out of turn will be moved
to another seat, you do that. If you

sing a song in English, you do that.
If you say youll call their parents
after three warnings, you do that. If
a student is confident that certain
actions will result in certain consequences, then they will stop that action (unless
they like the consequence, in which case
re-think the punishments).

on in their private life. So, you need to
tread carefully and work out what the
root cause is. If its an issue of shyness,
then this is a student that you allow
to sit with their friends. In that
case, with pair work and group
work, they are much more likely to
give their opinion and talk about
the point youve given them, even
if they wont be the spokesperson.
Allow them to work at their own
pace, give positive reinforcement
when they do speak out loud, and
give encouragement.

Solution:

If a student doesnt participate and it seems to be from


a lack of confidence in their
own abilities, then lots of
positive reinforcement is key.
If theyre good students, then
compliment their work at
every opportunity. If theyre
weak, then compliment the
effort, and take extra time
to differentiate for them.
Give lots of instruction and
example, so that theyre confident they
understand whats being asked of them.
Give them work thats level appropriate,
so that they dont lose hope and just
give up in frustration. They may move
slower than the rest of the class, but
that doesnt matter if theyre making
progress.

2. The ATTENTION SEEKER


The attention seeker is not the same as
that student who wont stop talking.
Theyre the ones that talk loudly, demanding attention from the room, the
one that will always try to make jokes
when things are meant to be silent,
ask question after question from you.
They may also have behavioral issues,
because attention is attention, after all,
it doesnt have to be as class clown or
someone who needs to ask incessant
questions. This student is, broadly
speaking, someone who doesnt feel
they get enough attention elsewhere in
their life. And its important to remem-

ber that whether you agree or not, this


is what the student feels.

Solution:

So, give them attention. Say


their names a lot. Give them
some small responsibility, like
asking them to remind you
when theres just five minutes
left in class or to clean the
whiteboard. Get them to help
you demonstrate something,
like height he is tall, she is
short, etc. This way, youre
giving them attention, and
theyre not disrupting the class. Give
them positive reinforcement as well.
And keep giving them attention until
its not necessary any more.

4.The ones that just


dont pay attention
People stop paying attention for lots of
reasons. If an entire class is inattentive,
then you need to examine the lesson

plan, what they were doing just before


your lesson or what theyll be doing
afterwards (the final lesson on Friday
can be painful). If they seem tired, get
them standing; make it a physical lesson
to wake them up. Look at your lesson
plan is it age and level appropriate? Is
it based too heavily and consistently on
one thing?

If its just one or two inattentive students in the class, then


you need to focus on thoseAre you..
students specifically and try to
engage them. The best way is
to find out about their interests, and try to relate to them.
Have a lesson plan based
around sports, where perhaps the inattentive student
gives a presentation about the
difficulties and rewards of synchronized swimming; or a lesson about
music, where the inattentive student
will give a demonstration of playing a
one-man band. Obviously, you need to
tell the student in advance and make
sure theyre on board, and make sure
the lesson is appropriate for the class
and not blatantly pandering to the
inattentive student; they will know, and
refuse to participate.
There are lots of other student types,
and everyone will have great ideas
on the best ways of dealing with each
of them. But no matter what type a
student is, when dealing with them, you
have to take a deep breath and remember that all students are different, and
while putting them in broad categories
can help, you need to figure out the best
way to deal with each individual you
teach.

Without a doubt, teaching in summer semester needs an awe-inspiring


effort and love. It is also the best season to meet new students and
create a commitment with them. Youll bestartled abouthow much
theydifferfrom each other and thinking about how to deal with them.
During the summer semester, Ive also experienced different moments
with my students. There was one student who doesnt want to go to
the class during the first day because she was hesitant andashamed
ofbeing a beginnerstudentwho knows nothing inEnglish according
to her mom. But after our first class the student was grateful and
thankfulbecauseshe really enjoyed the class. Her mom chatted me
happily saying that her daughter loved the lesson so much and she
likes to attend the class every day. It was a big fulfillment for me.
There were also timeswhereinduring my class with my student, all the
family members were also there listening and answering questions,
then chuckles. I dont knowwhy, butit feels great to see them. I

But just when you thought you had Ortigas all figured out, we probed deeper and got our feet on a
simple ESL center located at the 17th floor of the Octagon Building which certainly exudes happiness
among all the 48 TAL teachers.
A chirpy workplace filled with feel-good, cheerful, always-on-top-of-the-world teachers, this center is
a proof that indeed,

So lets hear how the Summer Semester experience of these


two great teachers from CC center brought
positive changes in their career:

1. You have participated in the summer class last year and have achieved progress. How did
you feel about working in last years Le Waijiao summer classes?
Bry: Being part of summer semester last year was very challenging; being flexible on the schedule,
handling classes from the start till the end of the shift and making sure that the students are learning in every class. Being able to make it and finish 5 periods was a great achievement for me. It was
really exhausting to work for 8 straight days and have a 1 day off. Its like having 9 days in a week.
But the result was great. Every bit of hard work was really worth it. I am also excited to face
summer semester this year! I hope that every topic that will be discussed will be more interesting and
exciting for me and especially for my lovely students.
Car: It was a blessing. I am such a grateful soul for this job. It has been really challenging

yet I always find it fulfilling at every end of the day.

2. We know its very busy during work, so how did you balance your work and life?
Bry: Balancing work and life is easy. Work and focus on teaching every student and count it as a
great daily achievement. Go home with a smile. Take plenty of rest, have some time with the family
and do the second sentence again.
Car: What I do is to make every effort to contact people who are special to me. As a matter of fact, I am really grateful for the one week paid vacation you are giving us (bless you people).

3. What kind of reward did you get? Did you acquire some big bonus?
Bry: I was able to get some rewards from my students and their parents. They were able to recognize
me as an effective teacher. I got some commendations which helped me to stay in this account and
do the things that I like to do.

Car: I think we all did. Like what Ive said theyve been really generous to us teachers,
even more so with the paid vacation.

Bry: The environment of the summer class last year was


great. Everyone is busy and meeting new students was
fun. Every teacher last summer was able to adjust with the
schedule and time of every classes. We also realized that
finishing the whole summer semester exposed and made us
flexible in time. We became patient in finishing every tasks
and responsibilities given by TAL/Le Waijiao.
Car: Last years summer class was the first time we are to
meet the students and to introduce the lessons as well. Were
like ants capable of lifting something really big. We were so
new to QQ plus its written in chinese so we were groping.
I remember our center struggling big time with complaints.
Physical environment was excellent, however. We were provided computers and we dont share. Our place is a comfortable environment plus, free water. Haha!

5. Can you share some memorable stories between you


and your students?

Bry: Having a great conversation and different topics to


learn last summer semester was really great. Teaching them
the things that I know was a great experience for my students. I also learned something from them when they share
their daily activities, vacation and weekend plans, their

culture and the things that they love to do with their family. They were
very open and active in every conversation, thats why every story shared
during that time was memorable.
Car: I have this student who is a grade three starter. From the looks
of him, hes not really into my class. He was like a lion cub. Small and
always angry. He didnt even bother to think about my questions. He was
like NOOOOOO I DONT KNOOOOWWWW!!!.

Editors opinion: every teacher may meet different kinds


of students, but the best teacher need to learn how to
teach not only good students but also bad students.

6. You can meet your students everyday during summer class. How
do you feel about it?
Bry: The feeling was great and exciting. Seeing them and knowing that
theyre excited to see the teacher and they want to learn the next topic
was priceless.
Car: Its like meeting someone youve never met before. Students are
unpredictable. They are new every day. Sometimes theyre like overloaded
pizza. Full of cheese, bacon and pepperoni. Other times theyre like crust
deprived of tomato sauce or something. Haha!

7. Have you seen big progress in your students with your


help? How do you achieve this?
Bry: Ive definitely witnessed every progress of my students. This
is my biggest achievement. The way they listen, understand and
use the things that theyve learned make me and every teacher
know how effective we are in teaching.
Car: Well, I didnt really achieve anything but they did. If theres
one thing I am grateful about my students is that they are
learning in advance.

8. Can you share some secrets about your high SR rate?


Bry: There is no secret in hitting my Student retention Rate,
because I always share the things that I know on how to make
the students stay in the class. Establishing a good relationship
with the student is the main thing that the teacher should do.
It will help the student value the efforts of the teacher. Being
effective and having a unique class will get the interest of the
student. The teacher should also know how to monitor his/
her students. Always check the My Classes tab on the teachers
portal to view the students who already enrolled for the next
semester. Then convince the students politely to enroll again in
class. Explain the importance and benefits that they could get
in taking the class and learning with the teacher. In short, BE A
STRATEGIST!
Car: You just have to do your best in every situation. Muster
the courage to deviate from the dull routine of your class. Learn
how to put humor in your class. Learn how to breathe when
students are not in the mood to learn. Learn how to consider
students emotion but most of all learn how to pray for the
readiness of your heart. (Good. Ive got things to learn)

9. The 2016 summer class will come soon, what are your
hopes for this years summer class?
Bry: The only thing that I hope is to have more semesters to
come and more students to enroll. If it is going to be hard this
summer semester, then its OK. Every teacher is ready for the
challenge.
Car: I am hoping (crossing my fingers right now) that our
center will be number one. I hope for a good retention rate as a
whole and freebies for encouragements. Free coffee pleaaaassseeee!

1. You got a high SR rate last semester in your


center, would you like to share some teaching
skills and attention issues during the class?
Neil: When it comes to teaching skills, I think that
I just did what other teachers did. It is already
given that if you are a teacher of Le Waijiao, you
are a good teacher. I firmly that its not just about
your teaching prowess to have a good SR rate. One
of the major factors is your attitude towards the
class. Building a friendly relationship to your students is very important. I think its not just about
how well you pronounce words or how perfect
you grammar is. Its more than that. The students should be comfortable in the class. Also, the
parents should trust you when it comes to building
their childs intellectual aspect. They should see

credits given by the team and the students motivate me to do my job well. I think
that the team really appreciates the effort I exert, so its a motivation for me.
Also, seeing my students improve is also a big reward for me and for us teachers.

How do you balance your work and life?

Xian: Pacing is necessary to maintain a stress-free work and make your life
worthwhile. To have a long, healthy, productive, and happy life and career, we
need to understand the value of pace. There are times we need to throttle up, and
there are times we can throttle down. Self-awareness is crucial. Doing so well
will help us enjoy the journey as much as the destination. ^_^

5. How can you keep your SR rate high?


Neil: I can say that there is no certainty when it comes to keeping good SR rate.
Anything can happen, whether its good or bad. I think that I was able to keep
my SR rate high because I grow with my students. Since they are improving and
they know already my teaching style from previous semester, I have to give them
other approach for the next semester.

6. Can you share some memorable stories between you and your students?

What do you do when a student


doesnt pay attention during class?
Xian: Children have a very short attention span, though I am handling grades
5, 6, and 7. Whenever this happens on
my class, I use my skills as a Preschool
teacher for 7 years. I animate my voice
and ask them to imitate me. Hehe. I
also show some magic tricks that makes
them say, Wow! with a big O mouth.
:D Sometimes, if my student is not in the
mood to study, I do a role play using my
stuffed toys and conduct a class using it,
so that they would feel like we are just
playing while also learning in class.

What motivates you to do your


best on your job?

Neil: There is this student I had and he is so talented. His name is Harry and
I can say that hes one of the best students I had. He is really talented when it
comes to music. He can play the guitar (even plucking the strings), hand drum,
and clarinet. He was able the finish the test on the 10th week of Autumn Semester very soon and we still have a lot of time. I just asked him to just play with his
dog and later play his guitar. He was able to play the guitar very well. After that,
her mom showed his clarinet and Harry offered to show his skill in playing the
instrument. Since we still have time, I let him play the instrument and that was
captivating. We ended the class with dancing and grooving while he was playing
the hand drum. That was really memorable and fun.
Xian: Every lesson is memorable. I always make sure that our class is enjoyable,
though there are times that my students are not in the mood. I make sure to light
up their day, before we start our class. We only see each other once a week so I
make sure that before we end our class, we can have a picture taking while doing
some wacky pose, and handling some props like toys or funny headbands.

7. Have you seen big progress in your students with your help?
How do you achieve this?
Neil: Yes, I sense their progress. I am very happy whenever they are saying
that they were able to have a perfect score in their English test. I think I have
achieved this by encouraging them to always do their best.
Xian: Last year during Summer Semester, my students are very shy to share their
experiences. They cant freely express the things they did on that day or voice out
their feelings and opinions. But now, they are talkative, (but in a smart way!)

Ichu: Oh, it was a lot of fun because that was the first time we had a class.
We joined Le Waijiao in June, and then right after that, it didnt take long.
Were already tinkering on our computers. We had the summer classes and
we had a lot of students back then! We would call it GGB aka, Gulonggulong Buhay Hahaha! I was able to manage of course and it was really a
lot of fun. I enjoyed it so much!

We know its very busy during work, so how did you


balance your work and life?
Rose: For me, its very difficult because actually, Im very far from my family. My husband and I are here, while my baby is in my hometown. Yes, its
really hard but I have a goal in life for the future and for my baby so thats
why I work here to be a teacher. I am very busy because we have classes
and trainings but I know my husban really understands. If I am here in the
office, I really focus on my work but when Im out, I spend time with my
husband. I also take time to check on my baby. I left her with my family
when she was just 11 months old because the salary
there is so small. I dont know if she knows me as her mother but she can
say
Mama. Yes, its really hard but Im also doing this for her

Nora: The vacation is also our reward because after that tiring semester, I
had time to relax. I went home to my province and went to the beach with
some of my co-teachers. We had lots of fun!
Ichu: Oh, yes! I received some bonuses and it was a fulfillment seeing your
name in the top 5, churva-churva hahaha! So that was really fulfilling! I
felt like I was in cloud nine. :D

between you and your students during summer semester?
Nora: I had this student last semester. He was
very serious. And every time we have a class hell
just say, Yes, No, Yes, No but when I cracked
a joke, he laughed! So from that time, whenever
I have a class with him, I always tell him a joke
or something that he can relate with his daily
life. Now, he always smiles in class and shares to
me the things he did during the day. Ive had this
student from summer until now. :D

6. You can meet your students everyday


during summer class. How do you feel about
it?
Ichu: It was a very good routine. The same set
of faces that you get to meet every day. You just
cant get them out of your mind. You already
established a good rapport with them. And then,
you get to love them.

7. Have you seen big progress in your


students with your help? How do you achieve
this?
Rose: For me, its a BIG YES because at first,
they cant pronounce the words well, also their
spelling and their sentence pattern. But now,
they have improved a lot! So you dont need to
talk fast because the students get confused with
some words.

a teacher, you should have the mastery
of the lesson. You should always be prepared in class. Give all your best! For me,
its not really important that the students
learn everything because they already
learned a lot in school. I think their biggest problem is that they are very tired!
So as a teacher, you should make your
students smile. When I open my camera
in class, I always say, Hello! How are
you? in a very energetic manner. You
should have a strategy on how to make
your students happy. Be patient and
always smile! Thats my secret! :D
Nora: What is my secret? I think its not
a secret. Its just the teacher, its just me.

Ichu: We just need to have the enthusiasm. You just need to build good rapport. And
then, you really have to love your students because if you love your student, everything else follows. Teachers who love to teach create kids who love to learn.

9. The 2016 summer class will come soon, what are your hopes for this years
summer class?
Rose: My only hope is that they will enroll again for the summer semester because we
need them!
Nora: Just like what Teacher Rose said, my only hope is that all my students will still
enroll in the summer semester! Hahaha!
Ichu: Im hoping for the best. High hopes! I presume that 2016 summer classes will be
a lot better. Looking forward to it! Dont entertain negative vibes. Think positive! :D

Retention Rate this summer semester from the top-performing teachers of FF center:

1. You got a high SR rate last semester, would you like to share some
teaching skills and attention issues
during the class?
Nikki: One of the skills that I use in
my class is humor. Yes, I am a humorous
teacher. It makes the class more fun! I
think that this is a skill that I should
keep forever so that they can
always have fun and be comfortable in
class. One attention issue Ive faced was
when my student was playing games
during class instead of focusing on our
lesson.

So what do you do when a student


doesnt pay attention during class?

Belle: Students are unique individuals. So in teaching I can meet students


with different attitude and personalities.
As a teacher I should be a keen observer
towards my learners. Regarding those
students who dont pay attention during
classes, I really take time learning how
to handle them. I have this student of
mine who is always saying wait please.
What I did was, I used puppets during
our classes and used my name as example because I dont know whats with
my name that he laughs at it. But before
the class ends, I make sure that I have
instilled in
his mind some good
values.

What motivates you to do your


best on your job?

Jessa: I think the one who motivates


me are my students because whenever
I can see that there is proper transfer of
learning during class, Id really feel very
happy. And then, maybe my co-teachers
here because in this place Ive found a
second home. I really love them! So yes,
they also motivate me but my students
are my main reason of coming to work
every day. I dont want to be absent.

Elsa: For me as well, I need to


have proper time management. I also
have my own family so I need to balance my time to my kids and also here
in my job. I need to wake up early to
prepare my kids needs then after that,
I also have to prepare myself to go to
work.

prepare my lessons so that I can teach
my students well. And I think I also
got a high SR rate because I show to
them that I really love them as my best

6. Can you share some memorable stories between you and your
students?
Jessa: I think every moment with
my student is memorable for me
because we are not only having an
exchange of ideas inside the class but
also even if we dont have a class.
Sometimes, they will ask me for some
help with their English homework and
then I will check on that one and help
them. So I think that my students feel
that I am really their second mother.
Nikki: I remember one student who
told me that I am her best friend. And
I felt so wonderful knowing that she
treats me like her best friend. Thats
why she always shares her secrets with
me. Its flattering!
Elsa: I remember one class wherein my student told me that I am a
funny teacher. Because, we even laugh
at each other! Hahaha! I always crack
some jokes and relate our lessons to

Belle: I have so many memorable moments with my students but
I want to share this story together
with my witty, energetic, handsome
student who is always bursting with
ideas. His name is Jobs. He is my
student since summer semester. Hes
always smiling during class thus,
making it full of fun. He always
shares his experiences with me.
And one more thing, he always has
some surprises for me in class. We
talk as if were friends for a long
time already.

7. Have you seen big progress


in your students with your help?
How do you achieve this?
Jessa: I can really see BIG
improvements with my students
because from the first time that we
saw each other, they are not very
good in pronouncing the words and
in making sentences. But now, they
can really express themselves and
pronounce words well. It is good to
feel that youve helped someone. I
think Ive achieved that because I
teach with a heart and I let them
learn while having fun in class.
Nikki: Yes, yes, yes! As what
I have observed, my students
before cant answer me directly. It
takes a long time before they can
respond but now, they can talk to
me confidently. They now have the
confidence to answer in straight
English and share their ideas with
me. Theres really a BIG progress
and Im so thankful for that.

One of the goals of a teacher is to get the high


retention rate; it is the lifeblood of
Le Waijiao and it definitely shows that students
really like to study with you and their parents
believe in you.
Moreover, getting a high retention rate can absolutely define you as a
Great Teacher.
Being a teacher in Le Waijiao and being one of
those who got a high retention rate, is the greatest achievement I ever received in my life. I feel
so grateful and blessed to have this award. I just
teach my students with a happy face and make
them laugh in my class. If they are laughing it
means they are learning. If students feel comfortable in learning with you then they will find ways
to be with you again.
As what I have experienced, I have this one student who told me that they will
have their vacation and they dont have time to be in my class. But to my surprise,
she and her parents found ways to fix the schedule just to have classes with me. I
then realized that if the students really like you then they will basically find time
to have a class and enroll with you again.
The most important thing to get a high retention is to make them feel loved.
Make friends with them. Give them what they need and make them satisfied.
Listen, smile, be yourself, adjust, be a second parent to them, and most
importantly LOVE them as if they are your own family. I got a high retention rate
not because I forced them to enroll but because I know they would love to stay
with me, and be my student again if they can. I am just so thankful now, knowing
that having this achievement is one of the most memorable and unforgettable
things that happened in my life.

rate, the first thing that comes to my mind is pressure.
Who doesnt feel the same way? Well, there are so
many factors why the teachers keep on gaining a lot of
students and why others dont.

In my experience, Ive made a lot of mistakes professionally but Ive
tried to learn from it by evaluating my strengths and weaknesses to
further improve my teaching approach. Yes, improving yourself is the
fundamental aspect in reaching the standard of our company like the
student retention rate. However, in the process of doing your objectives
and goals, certainly there are problems that you might encounter; as a

result you tend to feel less productive and demotivated.


As I have observed during the past semester, there were
times that I wasnt able to maintain my composure in the
class due to some reasons. One of the conflicts that Ive
encountered was dealing with the students who were not
interested to study and students who want to study but
inactive in the class. Ive tried various ways to handle the
problem with different levels of the students.
For the passive students, whether starter or intermediate, I
performed as an actress and a joker in the class. Moreover,

challenging tongue twisters were also effective. They enjoy


reading the passage and learning at the same time by
practicing their pronunciation skill. Showing cute toys and
pictures were a common strategy to catch your students
attention but still helpful. For the active students, Ive used the
same method but I failed. They are more interested in talking
and laughing at the same time. Ive prepared stories and
experiences, thats the time they share their own experiences
and speak their minds as well. Another conflict is the students
schedule for the next semester. Some of them have plans
to go abroad to study and to have a vacation. Others are
satisfied for just one semester of learning the English
language.

So, what are we going to do


for these uncontrollable hindrances
to retain our students?
1. Listen to their thoughts and experience
Students are the center of the learning process. The teacher
is lucky if the student shares his/her experience in school,
sometimes they also disclose family matters. The reason why
they are very open is because they are comfortable with you.
They want to feel comforted by the person that they trust the
most more than their mother-and that is YOU, Teacher.
2. Prioritize your students during the
class
Your students know if youre doing something while youre
teaching. Of course, we have to be on track of their sentence
construction and pronunciation lapses. But dont be too obvious
that youre typing their errors or searching something. You can
multitask but make sure that your class has quality.
3. Be appreciative and supportive
This is inevitable especially to the students who are not
motivated in learning. Simple praises and comments will make
their day right and youll never know that it might help them
realize their worth and become confident in everything they do.

4. Demonstrate your innate talents


Make your students amazed, laugh, have fun, and learn though
your natural abilities. Whether its singing, dancing, storytelling,
or impersonating, they will absolutely love it. I am certain that it
will never be forgotten.
5. Always be enthusiastic and charismatic
to your students
One of the important things to remember to gain your students
again. Set aside your problems at home and keep smiling in the
class. Students like a teacher who is approachable and ready
to make them smile. Your beautiful smile is a sign of a friendly
class.
There are tons of ways to capture your students interest and
trust to study with you again.
These are just tried and tested approaches based on my experience from the past semester.

that time, I felt so
humiliated. I felt
so bad. I felt so
small not that I
was literally small
at that time but
kidding aside, that
was one of the
many instances
of life that most
people
would
wish they wont
have. Too bad, I
had.
That was one
typical
day
for
elementary
students like me.
You fix yourself
and prepare for a
long day at school.
Then there came
the time for the
subject English. A
topic about VERBS
was
discussed
on the day that
I was absent.
Such misfortune
I had, a test was
given about the
topic and I didnt
have any idea
what it is about.
When everybody
was
finished
answering,
the
teacher called out
names one by one
and had us answer
every question.
And when it was
my turn, plop!
Boom! Bang! Oh
God! Oh-my-God!
I was as nervous
a prisoner sitting
on an electric
chair, waiting for
his end. Then that
was it. I wasnt
able to answer
the
question.
I was standing
there cold as

ice when the teacher told me to go in


front beside her. She made me write
the words where I got wrong. She kept
on talking about plurals and singulars
and all those things came together and
messed up my mind even more. I was
so afraid of what will happen next. Then
she stood up. Then she made me look
at the board, pointed at the words as
if she was going to break them. I knew
she was mad. And she was mad because
I did not know how to answer. I was
standing with my head bowed, looking
at my old rugged shoes and almost
crying. Then she pointed her finger on
me as if I did a crime. I really wanted to
burst out. I wanted to run to my mom
and cry. When she told me to go back
to my seat, I glanced very quickly at
my classmates who were looking at me
with mixed emotions. Some of them
pitied. Some wondered. And at least,
some just didnt care.
My self-confidence, self-esteem and
everything about myself was shattered.
All I thought about myself from then
on is that I am nothing. I am dumb.
I do not know things. Im not smart

like my classmates. Im not as good as


them and neither am I good at all.From
then on, I have always been afraid to
speak up my mind. I have always been
afraid to raise my hand for an answer
which I am sure is correct. I have always
been afraid of saying the wrong things
because I looked at people, especially
teachers, as monsters who will eat
my self-confidence and kill me for the
mistakes that I have committed.
That was the first quarter of the school
year and I got a very low grade of 79.
After that tremendous event in my
life, I swore to myself that I will become
better. My grade of 79 became 89 in
just one quarter. Then on the next two
quarters, I got even higher. Why did I get
that far in a very short period of time? I
just smile and think to myself, with what
I have experienced, there are only two
possible options to choose from: 1.) to
just drown in discouragement and stay
there at the bottom or 2.) Swim. Fly.
Fight. Swim until you reach the shore.
Fly until you can say that you can defy
gravity. Fight as long as you can. I chose
the latter.

And here I am
now. Smiling and
having my eyes
teary at the same
time as I click the
mouse and press
each letter in the
keyboard. I am an
English teacher.
And I promise
not to do and
to do one thing:

humiliate

child in front

anybody.

This is where the final event of Le Waijiaos Got Talent
took place, attended by different media personalities,
project managers, teachers and guests from outside
of Le Waijiao.

Got Talent final round. He didnt learn
this skill until he decided to join this
competition. Imagine? Teacher Mo

Teachers running to and fro, frantic about whos going to
rehearse next; teachers setting up their props instead of taking
breakfast on time; teachers practicing during breaks;

friends and getting to know each other; teachers building

these are the things that made them a winner even before
they set their foot on stage.

Glazed Chicken
Teacher DOMINIQUE

Ingredients:
2 pieces of chicken breast cut into half
5 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tsps. of sugar, diluted in 1 tsp. of water
Butter
Steps:
1.Deep fry chicken breasts until the color turns to
golden brown. Set aside.
2.Melt butter in a pan and toss in minced garlic. Stir
for two minutes.
3.Add the chicken and combine the sugar mixture.
Serve.

Oreo Truffles
Teacher NICA
Ingredients:
Oreo Cookies, 1 box is equivalent to two sets.
For this, we need 5 sets.
cheese cream
Chocolate bars
Cooking Materials:
Bowl ; Tray

; Pestle for grinding the biscuit

Steps:
1.Grind Oreo Cookies into small pieces. Smash or
crash it so that if youre going to bite it is soft.
2.After grinding the biscuits, transfer it inside a
bowl and mash with cream cheese.
3. Scoop one part, make it round and put inside
the tray.
Sizes will depend on you.

Teacher STARKS

The song was dedicated to all the children and adults who are ESL
learners, for them to be able to continue learning and to never give
up on the challenges they face. Despite all of the failures they
experience and everyone seems to give up on them, this is to let
them know that there is still that one person who believes in their
strength.
The lyrical composition was based on true life experiences of the
teachers here in Baguio City. When we were making the lyrics of
the song, we ask the teachers in our center questions which are
related when they are having their classes, and this became
the base of our song. Then when we added our own
experiences, this is when we were able to get the concept
of what to write as the lyrics. The musical arrangement
was prepared by our band members mainly Teachers
Starks, Jazz, Jay, Joe and Mitch. The main goal of joining
the competition was to give inspiration to students who
really want to learn. Sure, winning is good but we only
think of it as a bonus.
We didnt expect to win the competition but hearing
about the news made us very happy. The feeling
was astonishing and we felt that all of the hard
work we made has finally paid off. Some of the
teachers gave us some insights after hearing
the song:
Teacher Alej said: This song is so eye
opening. I love it with a passion, it makes me
think about how precious it is to be a teacher,
and how quickly it can affect other peoples
lives. It really is a question of, Am I giving him/
her a brighter future? This song was so well written,
and so amazing. It shows you the meaning of being a
teacher in the lyrics.
Teacher Joey said: The first time I listened to the song, it
made me feel motivated about my work as a teacher. It pushed
me to do more in my classes and that I have to be the best, to be
that hero which can help my students and bring out the best in
them, as what the message of the song implies.
The emotions the song My Hero brings out are courage,
perseverance, and bravery. It shows courage because you
have to find the bravery in you to face your struggles.
Also, it shows
perseverance because
you have to try hard to
get through your problems
even if no one tries to help you.
We wanted to make a song which can touch the hearts of the listeners but at the same time get the attention with its catchy
musical composition. We wanted our listeners to feel that you can count on someone who can bring out the best in you, and
we were glad that we were able to reach that kind of expectations from ourselves. For us its not about being famous or about
winning the competition, its about the feeling that we want to share to every single teacher around the world.
