Mission Statement:
The goal of all arts content classes at Frog High School is to provide
students tools and knowledge needed to learn about arts for the rest of
their life in a more meaningful manner than would otherwise be
attained.
Course Description:
Students will utilize the jazz medium of music to make discoveries of
general music making, music theory, jazz history, improvising in a
safe place, and gain understanding of the standards related to
performance.
Course Goals:
1. Students will perform music of the jazz medium of both the
standard and new repertoires with accuracy in rhythm, pitch, and
style.
2. Students will have an understanding of jazz music theory and how
it relates to choosing scales and patterns for improvisation.
3. Students will individually research and present information on a
major figure of the jazz community.
4. Students will utilize their knowledge of jazz theory to improvise
upon any given chord progression.
Achievement Expectations:
1. Students are expected to give their best effort during class and
rehearsal time.
2. Practicing regularly will be expected of all students to ensure
rehearsal time can run as smoothly as possible.
3. Grades will be based half upon written work and half upon playing
assessment.
3

Classroom Expectations:
1. Respect is the overarching expectation.
2. Students should always be willing to give activity based learning a
try during rehearsals. We all learn from our mistakes. Directors can
help to redirect learning of students to prevent those mistakes in
the future only if the student makes the mistake once in front of the
director.
3. Tardiness will be considered after the first 5 minutes after the bell
has rung. This should be ample time to put instruments together
and get an initial tuning of the instrument.
4. Students are expected to be present for the dress rehearsal notated
in the course calendar.
5. Concert etiquette is demanded during both student performances
and the performances of their peers.
Consequences:
1. Students who fail to meet these classroom expectations will
first be asked to fill out a behavior redirection form.
2. On second failure to meet these classroom expectations,
student will have a discussion with the director after
rehearsal.
3. On third failure to meet these classroom expectations,
student and parent will have a meeting to discuss a plan to
redirect behavior effectively.

Tuxedos and Dresses will be issued to students in the Jazz program during
the first few weeks of class. It will be the students responsibility to ensure
the formal wear is properly maintained. If lost or damaged, it will be the
students responsibility to replace that item. There is a contract which needs
to be filled out which is located in the forms section of this handbook related
to the concert dress.
Instrument Care
Students should take care of their instruments in a manner which ensures
they work in the best possible way. The following link describes proper care
for instruments.
http://www.conn-selmer.com/en-us/parents/beginning-band-andorchestra/cleaning-and-maintenance/
Instrument Rental
Instruments will be available to students in any ensemble at Frog High
School at a rental cost of $20 per semester. This cost goes towards
maintenance of the instrument being utilized by students. A contract for
instrument rental is located in the form section of this handbook.
Items For Sale
Items such as reeds, valve oil, mouthpieces, and neck straps will be available
for purchase through the band office. They will be sold at cost to keep it
affordable for the students. It is not the goal of this service to make profit.
The main goal is to ensure students have access to what they need to be
successful. Students can use cash or money from their fundraising accounts
to purchase the needed items.

Private Lessons
The entire music department staff at Frog High School highly encourages
private lessons on the instrument each student plays. They are, however, not
required. The following list are private lesson instructors the music
department staff have had success with in the past:

Fundraising
Fundraising will be utilized to help purchase new music, instruments, and
replace worn out formal wear as needed. We ask students to participate in 2
fundraisers which are pretty simple.
Holiday Combo-Grams
With a given donation to the jazz department of Frog High School, the
donor will be presented the opportunity to give a Holiday Combo-Gram.
This involves playing of holiday music by small groups of 4 or 5. The
presentation can be to the donor or to anyone within city limits who is
available to receive it during the hours of 8am to 3pm on December 10th.
Profit will be split evenly between student fundraising accounts and the jazz
band general fund.
7

4th Concert Concessions

Volunteer students and band boosters will run a concession stand of
grilled hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and drinks during the outdoor concert on
May 10th. Profits will be split half and half between the student fundraising
accounts and the jazz general fund.
Student Leadership
Student leadership allows for rehearsal time to run more smoothly. While
students with titles are given specific duties, it is all students responsibilities
to lead the groups to a successful performance. Leadership will be
determined by students and staff during the first few weeks fo class.
President- The president of the Jazz program of Frog High School is the
figurehead of the 1st tier jazz group. They are to facilitate meetings with the
director, section leaders, and the treasurer to ensure the semester is going
smoothly.
Associate President- The president of the Jazz program of Frog High School
is the figurehead of the 2nd tier jazz group. They are to facilitate meetings
with the director and section leaders to ensure the semester is going
smoothly.
Treasurer- The treasurer is to meet with the director to help with the
allocation of funds. They are also the liaison of the fundraisers. This
includes setting up groups for the combo-grams and recruiting a portion of
the 4th concert concession workers.
Section Leaders- These positions go the principle player of each section in
each ensemble. It is the section leaders job to hold at least 3 sectionals of
30-minute length per semester. This will help to ensure the section is
matching in as many ways as possible.
Awards
8

Awards will be given at the final concert of the year on May 10th during the
set-up changes between ensembles. There will be both student and teacher
voted awards. Awards will be presented for a variety of different categories.
Awards will not only be presented to students, but also to parents and
community members who help to make the job of a director much easier.
Activity Policy
1. Students will attend all performances and events listed on the calendar
within this handbook unless otherwise authorized by the director.
2. There will be zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol on school grounds or on
school related trips.
3. There will be zero tolerance for representing the Frog High School Band
Program in a negative manner.
