Civil War Summary:

Civil War is a war within a country, or we can say that one side of a

country fights with another. The Civil War we are learning about took place

in the U.S. in 1861 and lasted for five years. The two sides of this war were

the Union (the North) and the Confederacy (the South). Everything in the

war started with secession. Secession is when a part of a country

separated from the country, and created another country. The South broke

apart, separated from the U.S. because of the disagreement with slavery.

Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and Texas left the Union,

and created the Confederacy.

Abraham Lincoln, the President of the Union lost plenty of army

supplies after the South seceded. Instead of giving up, he decided to re-

supply, in order to prepare for the sudden attack from the Confederacy. On

the 12th of April, 1861, Confederacy started the war. The First battle of Bull

Run, Confederacy took charge. As Union tried to attack the capital of

Confederacy, Richmond, Confederacy waited for the battle at Bull Run. In

a wider view, both sides have advantages, for the Union, population is

their main advantage; they also had better factories and shipyards. For

the South, they have more skilled officers, and they knew how to fight a

defensive war very well. The number of wins and losses for both sides

were similar, but the difference between the populations was too big for

the Confederacy to cover it with quality. So after numerous of battles,

North were decided as the winner of the civil war.

After the North won the civil war, Abraham Lincoln announced the

Emancipation Proclamation; it’s when all the slaves in the confederate

states were freed. This announcement angered most of the Southerners.

Abraham Lincoln took charge of the African-Americans with this

announcement. The African-Americans felt very thankful, so they joined

the Union Army, which was another important key of why the North could

win the war. The South also returns to the states, and there’s no longer a

country such as Confederacy.
