In the last
fifteen years, Grosse Pointers have become increasingly opinionated of their preference for one
end of the district versus the other. Essentially, the more diverse north side--including GP North
HS, and the more affluent south side--GP South HS. Although few outside of the district
understand the internal tension, the district believes strengthening from within will create a more
coalesced district community. Through their efforts, students, teachers, administrators, parents
and community members have been encouraged to use the hashtag #onegp in social media posts.
It quickly evolved into the district theme of the 2015-2016 school year. The hope is that the
thousands of residents who post to social media daily will essentially draw more buzz to the
district when using the hashtag. This can improve the perception from surrounding districts and
communities. In other words, your 21st century word of mouth.
In November, the GPPSS Early Childhood and Preschool programs expanded offerings
for 2016-17. Marketing strategy and advertising efforts are currently being used in hopes to
draw new families into the district. The long term goal is that young surrounding families will
try the tuition based programs. Once parents have joined the GP family, they are far more
likely to move into the district and allow their child to continue in GP schools. Many studies
show this can be an effective strategy at drawing in more residents. The committee and
leadership work highlighted the following within the presentation:
Early Childhood Special Education and current GPPSS Child Development and
Preschool at Barnes will continue as they currently exist.
Tuition based preschool offerings will expand to selected buildings, providing a menu of
options at varied locations across the district.
Free Young 5s program will be implemented in three buildings pending BOE approval
on December 14th.
The committee and district chose one focus area that directly correlates with student
enrollment and growth of the district as a whole. They have titled this area of the strategic plan
as Community Connections and Communication. Strong connections with the community are
imperative for the success of the district. Community connections are based on consistent, twoway communication between the district, its staff and students and all segments of the
community. The GPPSS values collaboration with the numerous groups and organizations
within the community that provide support and services for students and their families. The
district feels that a unified district from within will demonstrate a strong community to the
outside public. This is important in recruiting and retaining families to our district lines. Efforts
must be made to make all segments of the community aware of the districts strengths, student
activities and achievements as well as district concerns for future student and staff success.
One major action point of the Strategic Plan is to both increase and improve GPPSS information
through various electronic and social media methods. This includes:
More updated website and social media graphics
Increased social media followers and traffic tracked
Branded, professional promotional videos for each school on web, social media, cable
District talk show produced by high school TV production students with content chosen
by Superintendent
Increased use of teacher and administrator blogs
An improved mobile app
Updated e-newsletter topics
Increase content from school groups for upcoming events
Improved web content--updated with items from staff/students
School calendar cohesion
Increased videos from school events
A second major action point of the Strategic Plan is to directly increase student
enrollment. This includes the following measures:
Review of participation and enrollment of families who toured
District data shows that when participation by families at transition ages (5th,
8th), parents are less likely to choose private school.
Establish visitor books/sign- in sheets to catalog numbers and dates
o District data shows that prospective families are more likely to enroll who
attended open house or went on school tours
Enhanced prospective family materials with tour exit interviews
Increase in GPPSS preschool enrollment
Increase in kindergarten enrollment as these children age out of preschool and transition
into GPPSS K-12
o Add high quality preschool options in elementary schools based on parent survey
data and facilities review while maintaining a program that is self-sustainable
Analyze enrollment projection instrument/process
Maintain rigorous and comprehensive residency requirement for K-12
o
Finally, the Grosse Pointe Public School system has begun personal tours of all middle
and high schools. A strong percentage of residents choose private schools in the metro-Detroit
area because they can afford the tuition. The GPPSS has felt it necessary to provide the personal
touch these families expect in order to draw them in. District data shows that families who tour
the building and hear about the many opportunities available are far more likely to make the
transition from private to public school. This is increasingly true for parents during transitional
grade levels for their children, such as 6th and 9th grade.
