Life Cycle of a Frog
______________________________________________________________________
_______
Central Focus/Big Idea: Understand the different stages a frog goes through in its life
cycle.
Subject of this lesson: Life cycle of a frog.
Grade Level: 2nd
NC Essential Standard(s): 2.L.1: Understand animal life cycles
2.L.1.1: Summarize the life cycle of animals:
Birth
Developing into an adult
Reproducing
Aging and death
Next Generation Science Standard(s):
LS1.B: Growth and Development of Organisms

Reproduction is essential to the continued existence of every kind of organism.

Plants and animals have unique and diverse life cycles. (3-LS1-1)
21st Century Skills: Using the 21st Century Skills Map-Science available on Moodle,
choose the two or three skills that apply to your lesson. Explain why you chose these.
Communication: Students will be able to talk amongst the class about facts they learned
after the slide show.
Initiative & Self-Direction: Students will be working alone why they complete a
worksheet organizing the different stages of the life cycle in order.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: I Students will be able to summarize what happens in each of the
stages a frog goes through during its life cycle. They will also be given the opportunity to
share facts they learned after the lesson and summarize what all they learned.

Instructional Objective:
Students will see a slide show that tells them about frogs and the different stages in its
life cycle. There will also be pictures for students to see, such as pictures of each stage
and examples of different species of frogs. Afterwards as a class we will label each
stage on the board. After we have labeled the stages in order I will ask students to
share what they learned in the slideshow about each stage. Once we are done students
will be asked to go back to their desks to complete a worksheet. The worksheet will
have pictures of each stage and students will arrange them in order and label each
stage. Students will be required to get 4 out of 4 correct in order for them to pass.
Prior Knowledge (student):
Students should know what metamorphosis is, what happens in a life cycle, and what
frogs are.
Content Knowledge (teacher):
The teacher will need to know the different stages of the life cycle and characteristics of
each stage.
Accommodations for special needs
I will make sure that students with physical disabilities are located near the front of the
room so they can stay at their desk and be near the carpet if they are unable to move.
Also I would stay close to the student so that way if they had any questions I am easily
accessible. For ELL I will make sure to know both Spanish and English for key words.
Materials and Technology requirements:
Smart Board
Worksheets (20)
White Board
Scissors (20)
Glue sticks (20)

Total Estimated Time: 45 min.

Source of lesson: Observing in the classroom.
Safety considerations: Students will be instructed to use scissors appropriately and to
make sure they put them back in a safe place when they are done using them. Also I
will make sure students move from carpet to desk in an orderly fashion.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

Engage: Ok boys and girls I know you have gone over different life cycles of different
animals. Can anyone tell me one animal you have all learned about and something they
thought was interesting? Excellent! Today we are going to be learning all about frogs
and different stages they go through in their life cycle!
Explore:
Now we are going to go through this slide show and while I am reading to you
about each stage I want you to focus and be prepared to share with the class
some things you have learned!
Ask them: Can anyone tell me what the word metamorphosis means? What
other animals do you know go through metamorphosis? Do you think a frog goes
through metamorphosis? Lets find out!
Now go through the slide show made for the lesson. Make sure to read over
each bullet point slowly and occasionally let students maybe say a key word out
loud as a class.

Explanation:

After we go through the slide show we will together as a class label the 4 parts of
the life cycle in order.
Can someone tell me the name of stage 1? Stage 2? Stage 3? Stage 4?
Awesome! Now someone share with me something they learned in these
stages.
What are characteristics of a frog in stage 1? What about stage 2? What about
stage 3? And finally stage 4?
As students share right down what they say.

Elaborate:
Students will be given 2 worksheets. On the first worksheet there are 4 blank
circles. On the second worksheet there are pictures of each stage. Students will
be directed to cut and paste these pictures onto the worksheet with circles in
order. If students finish early they can color these pictures.
Then ask students, What picture did you all put for stage 1? What stage is this?
And so on.
Evaluate:

Formative: Throughout the lesson I asked students questions to check for

understanding. I also had them tell me facts about each stage while writing down their
answers.
Summative: At the end I had students complete a worksheet summarizing the order of
these stages. I expect them to get 4 out of 4 correct.
To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate
