Photograms

Due: April 11 (last work period April 7th)

Assignment: You are going to research the photographic technique
created by Man Ray called photograms and create your own series of
photograms in the darkroom. Throughout our unit, we are investigating how
illusions are created within photography. Therefore, your photograms must
show evidence of illusion: you are going to use everyday objects to create
arrangements that are perceived as something else.

Part I: Research (I-2 pages in sketchbook)

Who is Man Ray? What types of photography did he make?

What is a photogram (rayograph)? How is it made?
Print 3 examples of Man Rays photograms and attach them into your
sketchbook with your research.

Part II: Planning (1 page in sketchbook)

Thumbnail sketches for (at least) each of your four ideas.

Include your test strips from the darkroom as well (for exposure)
Your sketches should show the image that you are trying to create as
well as the objects you will use to create that image.

Ex.

Part III: Photograms

4 completed photograms (attach into sketchbook)

Your photograms must include objects that are arranged in such a way
that they show something else.
The illusions that you are trying to create with your images should
have some kind of theme that connects them (ex.
Sports/nature/winter/etc.)

***Consider the objects you are using for your images

(opaque/transparent, layering, etc). The texture/transparency of the
objects will affect how they look in the photogram!
