American Style Resume Guidelines for


Graduate Degree Applications to U.S. Universities

Resume Content
Personal data: Name, mailing address, email address, telephone number with
country code
Education: For each degree or certification, include the degree/certification
type (BA, BS, Certificate etc.), field of study (Business, History etc.), year of
graduation, degree awarding institution and location of the institution
Work Experience: Position title, organization name and location, month and
year work began and ended at the organization, description of role and skills
or experience gained
Volunteer Work: Work, Apprenticeships and Internships: Similar information
to Work Experience above
Honors, Awards and Activities: Honor or Award with date and awarding
institution, activity name
Specialized Skills: Languages, Computer Software and Programming Skills,
Social Media and other Technology, Leadership Skills and others
Content and Language

Do not have to have a full sentence


Never use pronouns (I, my, mine). It is implied.
Do not abbreviate, unless it is industry standard
Always start with a strong action word
Keep it to one page
