Single Camera Analysis

Drama: Breach
After visiting Hertfordshire University and attending the film
and television course, I found that this drama shows how
young film makers can create short but incredibly professional
movies. This story tells us about an SAS serviceman that has
been psychologically scarred and haunted by his victims; he
then faces a very important decision which will change his life.
To some extent this movie is Linear, but with aspects on nonlinear as it tells the start to finish but ends as the film started
therefore completing the full circle. In my opinion some
aspects such as the repeated routines; similar if not the same
scenes repeated is influenced by the movie Vantage Point.
This drama shows award winning lighting also including
awards such as; Best drama ( Royal Television society &
London Student awards 2014), Best sound design ( Vision Film
festival by AVID) and Best cinematography Vision film festival
by Zeiss). Mise en scene is incredibly planned as it shows the
life of a serviceman and life during service in the war. The
locations include morbid and depressing home and raided
building in the Middle East.

Sitcom: Modern Family

A sitcom usually consists of a start and an end point. This
means that the story is consistent therefore making the
sitcom very easy to follow. In terms of the show Modern
Family, this is somewhat unclear as it is staged as a life
documentary; this is made by including one-to-one interviews
with each character every time that a memorable or
significant event occurs. With this in mind the show is very comedic and includes
quirky and cringe worthy characters such as Phil Dunphy, the father. As I
mentioned early the show is staged as a documentary therefore the lighting must be
as natural as possible but still allowing the camera to capture each moment with
sufficient quality and lighting. The camera techniques used are countless when it
comes to documentary styled sitcoms, with this in mind the Modern Family camera
techniques include: Rule of thirds, Axis of action, establishing shot; which is very
consistent each episode as this makes the show memorable to its audience, mid
shots, Tracking etc. The editing is quite simple compared to other shows that include
a lot of SFX, Modern family mainly consist of long scenes and little but often cuts.
This is due to the fact that modern audiences have stereotypically shorter attention
spans, making little but often cuts reduces boredom for the viewer. The Sound and
mise en scene work directly together as sound provides the full experience of the
environment that a character is in. With this in mind the football scene includes

background sounds of children playing football but is still consist mainly of Gloria
the mothers over reaction to them playing.

Documentary: The Elephant in the Room - Narrated

by Virginia Mckenna
After visiting Hertfordshire University and attending the film
and television course, I found that this documentary shows
how young film makers can create short but incredibly
professional movies. With this in mind the story is non-linear
as only the most important facts are stated throughout the
film. Due to the non-linear structure, the film shows how
elephants are not better off in zoos and enclosure, but instead
they are better off in the wild, even with the poachers hunting
them. The lighting used throughout is very natural, but they
use fill lights to reduce harsh shadows for the interviews. You
may ask why this is important to keep everything natural. This
is due to the fact that documentaries are usually thought of as
a pure way of making a film, nothing is fake, and nothing is
scripted to the point that it might as well be a movie. Angles
a varied but mainly include mid to close shots and
establishing shots. This is why documentaries are so effective,
as the establishing shots establishes the subject and the mid/
close up shots allows the narrator to comment on the subject
at hand. For example Mrs. Mckenna uses her experience with
the elephants to convey how she feels about the elephants
and how they should be treated. The mise en scene changes
from scene to scene, but this is due to the fact the
documentary wanted to highlight the living conditions that the animals were living
in, the sadness and cruelty is heightened even more than it
already is with the use of morbid music and sounds as well as
editing that shows life an elephant before and after being
captured and placed in a zoo.

Crime: Narcos
Not many shows have captivated my attention, but Narcos
seemed to have the edge over any TV show that is on air right this moment. Shows
such as Breaking Bad, Prison Break and of course Narcos, seems to have me
leaning off my seat with every episode released. Due to the fact that season one of
this show is loosely based on the actual events during the 1970-1980 height of the
Medellin cartel, the show prides itself with incredible mise en scene, lighting and
award winnin g editing and sound. The lighting must portray a natural scenario to
make it seem as though the events did truly happen. The camera techniques used
are countless when it comes to Crime shows, with this in mind the Narcos camera
techniques include: Rule of thirds, Axis of action, establishing shot, mid shots,
Tracking etc. The editing is quite simple compared to other shows that include a lot
of SFX. This show contains a plentiful amount of dialogue both in English and
Spanish; this means that the axis of action arises every other scene, further more

the axis allows the camera to move within 180 degree angle making each scene as
natural as possible. The mise en scene adds to this genuine feeling as it is the show
is based in the South American soil, with perfect props and scenes.
