Louis Theroux
Louis Theroux was born on May 20, 1970 in Singapore, to a British mother and an American father, Paul Theroux
- a screenwriter. He started as a journalist, and bears influences from notable writers in his family, such as his
brother and father. He currently works with the BBC, producing his documentaries and television series.
Examples: By Reason of Insanity/ The Most Hated Family In America/ Louis And The Nazis/ When Louis Met...
Jimmy/ Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends
Theroux is one of the most well knownparticipatorydocumentary film-makers in the UK. He is often on camera,
interacting and interviewing the subjects. These interviews are usual very informal and often take place while
the subject is on the movie. The camera work in his documentaries are regularly handheld and due to the
realistic nature of the participatory mode.
He remains passive and respectful of the subjects of the documentary, allowing the construction of
arelationshipto be the reason for getting to the truth. This is particularly visible in his documentary regard the
Westboro Baptist Church:The Most Hated Family In America.
Theroux allows for his documentaries have a relaxed editing style. The conventional long shorts often consist of
moments that would likely be abruptly cut in a more sharply edited documentary. Examples of this included
time ofsignificantundesirable camera shake, or during scenes in small spaces in which the presence of the
camera as a bulky piece of equipment, rather than the tool of capture video, is glaringly obvious. However, in
my personal opinion, this only aids in the realism of the whole documentary and acts as a frequent reminder to
the audience that they action they are watching unfold on screen - is real.

Michael Moore
Michael Francis Moore is an American documentary filmmaker, screenwriter, author,
journalist, actor, and left-wing political activist. He is the director and producer of Fahrenheit
9/11 (2004), a critical look at the presidency of George W. Bush and the War on Terror, which
is the highest-grossing documentary of all time and winner of the Palme d'Or. His film
Bowling for Columbine (2002), which examines the causes of the Columbine High School
massacre, won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature. Both Bowling for Columbine
and Sicko (2007), which examines health care in the United States, are among the top ten
highest-grossing documentaries. In September 2008, he released his first free movie on the
Internet, Slacker Uprising, which documented his personal quest to encourage more
Americans to vote in presidential elections. He has also written and starred in the TV shows
TV Nation, a satirical newsmagazine television series and The Awful Truth, a satirical show.

Nick Broomfield
Nicholas Broomfield is an English documentary filmmaker. His self-reflexive
style has been highly influential, and was adapted by many later filmmakers. In
the early 21st century, he began to use non-actors in scripted works, which he
calls "Direct Cinema". His output ranges from studies of entertainers to political
works such as examinations of South Africa before and after the end of
apartheid and the rise of the black-majority government of Nelson Mandela and
the African Nationalist Party.
Broomfield generally works with a minimal crew, recording sound himself and
using one or two camera operators. He is often seen in the finished film,
usually holding the sound boom and wearing the Nagra tape recorder.

dangerous and volatile situations; including environments noted for war, conflict and civil unrest. In
2008 he was kidnapped along with his translator while filming in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border
region. They were freed three months later after Langan's family had negotiated their release.
Langan was held hostage by the Taliban for 12 weeks after trying to make contact with Al-Qaedas
second in command, as he searched for associates of Osama bin Laden. Langan stated he believed
Channel 4 paid "compensation" to those who held him for his release. In his first broadcast interview
since the release, Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow asked whether a ransom had been paid. Langan
replied: "No. I think a bit of compensation, not to the Taliban, but to some of the people in the house I
believe, but I don't know." Channel 4's position was: This was a very complex and delicate negotiation
and Channel 4 provided Seans family with support and expert advice. We dont think it is appropriate to
go into the detail of the dialogue that was necessary to secure Seans release. We shared information
with the Foreign Office throughout this process.
