Attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy in solids

Quantum Optics, Garching, Germany.
Spin Hall(SH) and Goos-Hnchen(GH) shifts from scattering from

plasmonic nanostructures.
Dr. Nirmalya Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Science Education
and Research, Kolkata, India.
One of the main objectives of my present work is to present a theory based on
conventional Jones and Mueller matrix algebra for analysis, interpretation and
quantification of the scattering mediated SOI effects via measurable polarimetry
characteristics, namely, diattenuation d (differential attenuation of orthogonal
polarization states) and retardance
(phase shift between orthogonal
polarization states) . I am also setting up a dark field microscopic imaging
system
to measure polarimetric parameters due to scattering from plasmonic
nanostructures.

Polarization microscopic imaging

Dr. Samarendra K Mohanty, Assistant Professor, University of Texas, Arlington,

The work was carried out towards the development of the polarimetric imaging
setup under the inverted microscope for doing the single cell polarimetric
imaging of the biological samples. The setup was automated using Labview
Program for the extraction of polarimetric properties like Retardence,
Depolarization and Diattenuation was written. The program take the crude
sample images, selects the region of interest and decomposes from each and
every pixel the above written polarimetric properties. The polarimteric images
were then reconstructed using the decomposed values from each and every
pixel. I also wrote a program for analysing the movement of cell in trap and to
extract the coefficient of stiffness from the series of time resolved images
obtained from the particle in the trap. The developed program uses image
processing module of matlab.

Summary
In this project, work
was carried out towards the development and
characterization of micrometer-sized dielectric beads with metal nanoparticles

attached to their surface for their use as optically trappable SERS active probe. In
this experiment we characterize the optimum amount of coating of gold that can
be done on the dielectric silica beads so that it remains in the trap while showing
the SERS phenomenon. We also tried to quantify that how the trapping efficiency
and SERS enhancement changes with change in the shape of metal nanoparticle.
For extracting very weak Raman signal from the background I wrote the matlab
program, which does the polynomial fit and subtract the background to give only
the required Raman Signals.

Summary
Eigenvalue calibration for

Mueller matrix measurement system
designed for both elastic and Inelastic scattering (fluorescence)
polarimetric measurements.
Dr. Nirmalya Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Science Education

A novel spectral Mueller matrix measurement system for both elastic and
Inelastic scattering (fluorescence) polarimetric measurements was developed. In
this approach, four required elliptical polarization states are sequentially
generated and analysed by using a polarization state generator (comprising of a
fixed linear polarizer and a rotating quarter waveplate) and polarization state
analyzer unit (similar arrangement, but positioned in a reverse order).
Performance of Mueller matrix setup developed in the lab was calibrated using
Eigen value calibration method. I worked on the Eigen value calibration of the
system where I took 16 spectral reading from the 4 known samples and wrote a
matlab code to extract the
PSG(Polarization state generator) matrix and
PSA(Polarization state Analyzer) matrix of the setup. Following successful
calibration, the system was initially explored in quantitative elastic scattering and
fluorescence polarimetric studies on normal and cancerous human cervical
tissues

and cross-over resonances of 87Rb F = 2 to F = 2 transition was analysed at
different pum intensities. Natural line width of Rubidium was obtained.
